PDCA - Plan Do Check Act
History
This methodology was originally called the “Shewhart Cycle” after its
founder, Walter Shewhart, but was renamed in 1950 for W. Edwards
Deming.
Description
Design Also known as the Continuous Improvement Cycle
Is a standardized problem solving procedure
Plan: what should be done
Do: implement the plan
Check: verify the result
Act: correct problems that arise; document;
Research
standardize; if goal is not achieved, repeat the process.
Production
Benefits
Provides a standard template for how people should
approach problems and improvements
The PDCA Process is a simple methodology for
PDCA = Plan
The PLAN phase consists of 5 Steps:
1. Study the Current State situation.
2. Identify an opportunity for improvement.
3. List tasks/steps necessary for achieving
improvement.
4. Prioritize.
5. Identify means for measuring progress on tasks.

PDCA = DO (Summary)
The DO phase is the
implementation of the PLAN;
it consists of 4 Steps:
1. Create a timeline for each
step/task.
2. Monitor the timeline and its
milestones for progress.
3. Support the participants who
are conducting the
steps/tasks.
4. Review the completion status
of the plan.

PDCA - Plan Do Check Act
PDCA =Check
PDCA =Act
The ACT phase is the implementation of the
final plan to ensure that the improvements are
standardized and practiced continuously. This
leads back to the PLAN stage for further
diagnosis and improvement. There are 2 Steps
to the ACT stage.
1. Reflect on “Lessons Learned.”
2. Plan the “Next Steps.”

PDCA - Plan Do Check Act
CHECK Confirm the plan is properly implemented and achieves the desired results
1. Measure the progress and results for each task.
2. Evaluate the results at task completion.
3. Confirm final results
Key Points
• PDCA is a process that supports a continuous improvement
philosophy.
• The CA (check act) portion of the process is equally as important as
the PD (Plan Do).
• During the Check phase we confirm the plan is properly implemented
and is achieving the desired results.
• The Action portion of the process has evolved to include steps on
preventing reoccurrence and institutionalizing the improvement as a
new practice to be improved upon.
• PDCA is a process through which new standards are set only to be
challenged again. Achieving standardization is not a fixed goal.
