1--1 UP-1850 Information
In June of 1994, ATL began offering the Sony UP-1850MD (NTSC)
Color Video Printer as a low-cost alternative to the Sony UP-5250MD
(NTSC). Later in 1994, the Sony UP-1850EPM (PAL) will be released
as an alternative to the UP-5250MDP (PAL).

The UP-1850 printers are offered as a purchasable option for UM-9

DP and HDI systems, and the HDI 3000 system. They can be
installed internally or externally.

The UP-1850 makes A6 size (4.0 x 5.5 inches) color or black-and-

white prints.

Interconnections for the UP-1850 are the same as for the UP-5250,
including the necessity of installing ferrite pot cores on the cables
when configuring the printer externally on UM-9 DP/HDI systems (not
on HDI 3000). The hand-held remote control for the UP-1850 is also
the same as for the UP-5250.

1850--1--21
1--2 Service Philosophy
The ATL CSR is responsible for installation, preventive maintenance
and unit swaps. Failed units will be returned to ATL for repair. Repair
of units under warranty will be done by the manufacturer. Repair of
units out of warranty will be done by the ATL Service Operations
repair shop.

1--3 Considerations for Operation

All menu settings are retained when power is cycled, except Print
Quantity, which automatically reverts to 1 (one).

Three types of print packs are available for the UP-1850: for color
printing, for B/W printing, and for color printing on self-laminating
paper. Each print pack contains an ink ribbon and print material,
which must be used in the specific combination provided in the pack.

NOTE: When loading paper into the UP-1850, make sure you do
not load the paper upside-down. (The printing surface is
shinier and should be facing up.)
1850--1--22
Manual frame switching (with the MEMORY PAGE button) is neces-
sary when using the remote control or the UP-1850 front panel con-
trols.

If all UP-1850 memory pages are full and you execute a print com-
mand from the host system, the message “HARDCOPY DEVICE IS
BUSY” is displayed. For example, when printing in 4-on-1 mode and
the first of a series of printouts has not finished printing, executing a
print command the 17th time (i.e., while memory is full) causes the
printer to send a BSY signal to the host system. If all memory pages
are full and you press the UP-1850 MEMORY IN button, a new
image overwrites the last image saved.

When the UP-1850 runs out of paper or ribbon, any images in printer
memory are retained and can be printed using the UP-1850 front
panel PRINT button after you load paper or ribbon.

If an error message is generated by the UP-1850, you can use the

UM-9 INT OEM DISPLAY softkey to display the message on the
UM-9 monitor. (See the host system operation manual.)

1850--1--23
2 Installation
2--1 UP-1850 External Installation

1850--2--2
3 Preventive Maintenance
NOTE: The name of Preventive Maintenance (PM) has been
changed to Quality Assurance Audit (QAA). The QAA proce-
dure is exactly the same as the PM procedure and the terms
are to be considered synonymous. The change is effective
only for the domestic U.S. field service force.

3--1 Cleaning
Clean the cabinet, front panel and controls with a dry soft cloth, or a
soft cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use
any type of solvent, such as alcohol or benzine, which may damage
the finish.

3--2 Inspection
Inspect panels, cables and connectors for damage.

5200--1--20
1--1 UP-5200 Information
In May, 1992, the Sony UP-5200 (NTSC) Color Video Printer
replaced the discontinued UP-5000. There were sufficient UP-5000P
(PAL) units on hand to continue shipments until early 1993 (see para-
graph 1--2, UP-5250 Information).

The UP-5200 was shipped with UM-7, UM-9 DP and UM-9 HDI sys-
tems either as an internally mounted or as external (stand-alone)
peripherals. This printer required new mounting brackets, and uses
the same ink cassette and paper as the UP-5000. The remote con-
troller is different than that for the UP-5000.

Interconnections are the same as for the UP-5000, including the

necessity of installing ferrite pot cores on cables when configured
external to the system.

5200--1--21
1--2 UP-5250 Information
In December of 1992, the two-memory Sony UP-5250 Color Video
Printer was chosen to replace the single-memory UP-5200 as an
optional internal or external peripheral for new UM-9DP and HDI sys-
tems. It also can be ordered as a purchasable add-on or upgrade for
the existing UM-9 installed base. This printer is not offered with the
UM-7.
Later installations (early 1993) were enhanced by a new mounting
plate and OEM compartment door.
The UP-5250 printers (NTSC and PAL) are the large color printer
options offered with the HDI 3000 system upon its release in 1994.
The UP-5250 has the same controls, connectors, and panels as the
UP-5200. The primary difference is these printers are shipped with
an installed software PROM labeled “ATL BSY” and “ATL” marked on
the carton. This software allows automatic memory switching when
controlled from the host system front panel. It also provides the
BUSY signal to the host system. These features are not available on
UP-5250 printers purchased through a source other than ATL.

5200--1--22
This printer required new mounting brackets, and uses the same ink
cassette and paper as the UP-5000. The UP-5250 required another
new mount and was installed in UM-9 systems configured with a uni-
versal mounting plate. The remote controller, ink cassette and paper
are the same as for the UP-5000.

Interconnections for the 5250 are generally the same as for the
UP-5000 and UP-5200. Refer to the cabling diagrams in this section
for details. The ferrite pot cores used for noise suppression on exter-
nal UP-5000 and UP-5200 printers are also required for external
installations of UP-5250 printers on UM-9 DP/HDI systems (not on
HDI 3000).

1--3 Considerations for UP-5250 Operation

All operator setups are retained when the power is cycled, except
Print Quantity returns to 1 (one).

Automatic frame switching occurs only when the printer is controlled

from the host system. Manual frame switching is necessary if you use
the remote or Sony front panel controls.
5200--1--23
The error message HARDCOPY DEVICE IS BUSY is displayed only
when you execute a print command on the host system and both
printer page memories are full. For example, if printing in four-on-one
format (which allows eight consecutive prints) executing a print com-
mand the ninth time, before the first four-on-one print is finished,
causes the printer to send a BSY signal to the host system.

The BSY signal is not sent from the printer if you print from the
remote or printer front panel controls. If both printer memory pages
are full and you press MEMORY IN on the remote control or the
printer front panel, a new image will overwrite the last image saved
but no new print will be initiated.

NOTE: If the printer is out of paper, the PRINT BUSY message is

displayed when you execute a print command from the host
system the next time after the first memory is filled. To save
the image in memory, first load paper and then press the
PRINT button on the Sony printer. Do not execute a print
command from the host system; doing so will load a new
image into memory, erasing the existing image.

5200--1--24
2 Installation
2--1 UP-5200/5250 External Installation
1. Position the printer on a table or cart near the system.
2. Connect the cabling per the appropriate cabling diagram in Sec-
tion 1.
3. Connect the printer to a wall outlet sharing a common ground
with the system.

Table 1--6 for UP-5250.
7. Verify that the system is correctly configured for an internal
color printer.
8. Test performance.

5200--2--2
3 Preventive Maintenance
NOTE: The name of Preventive Maintenance (PM) has been
changed to Quality Assurance Audit (QAA). The QAA proce-
dure is exactly the same as the PM procedure and the terms
are to be considered synonymous. The change is effective
only for the domestic U.S. field service force.

3--1 Cleaning
Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a dry soft cloth, or a soft
cloth lightly moistened with a mild detergent solution. Do not use any
type of solvent, like alcohol or benzine, which may damage the finish.

3--2 Inspection
Inspect panels, cables and connectors for damage.

1--4 Historical Information: UP-5200/5250
In May 1992, the Sony UP-5200 (NTSC) Color Video Printer replaced
the discontinued UP-5000. There were sufficient UP-5000P (PAL)
units on hand to continue shipments until early 1993.

Interconnections were the same as for the UP-5000, including the

necessity of installing ferrite pot cores on cables when configured
external to the system.

In December 1992, the two-memory Sony UP-5250 Color Video

Printer began replacing the single-memory UP-5200 as an optional
internal or external peripheral for new UM-9DP and HDI systems.

5600--1--17
The UP-5250 printers (NTSC and PAL) were the large color printer
options offered with the HDI 3000 system upon its release in 1994.

This printer required new mounting brackets, and used the same ink
cassette and paper as the UP-5000. The UP-5250 required another
new mount and was installed in UM-9 systems configured with a uni-
versal mounting plate. Interconnections for the UP-5250 were gener-
ally the same as for the UP-5000 and UP-5200.

1--5 UP-5600MD Information

In June 1995, the four-memory Sony UP-5600MD Color Video Printer
began replacing the two-memory UP-5250 as an optional internal or
external peripheral for new UM-9 HDI systems. Sony phased out the
UP-5250. The UP-5600MD can be ordered as a purchasable add-on
or upgrade for the existing UM-9 installed base. This printer is not
offered with the UM-7.

5600--1--18
The UP-5600MD uses the same video cables as the UP-5250 and
has the same dimensions, except it has a lower profile. Following are
main differences of the UP-5600MD:

x Increased resolution (300 DPI)

x Reduced print time (30 seconds per page; 34 for PAL version)
x More memories (four frames standard)
x More controls; 27 buttons total, part of them on a tilt-down control
panel
x Print options are 2-on-1, 8-on-1, and 16-on-1
x Automatic sense and adapting to input power (110V/220V)
x Lower profile

The 300 DPI resolution will increase the readability of text in the
4-on-1 print mode.

The PAL color printer is made by ATL from the Sony UP-5600MD
NTSC by adding a PAL 625 Line Memory PCB to the printer. ATL
then labels the printer as ATL part number 3500-1694-01. The modi-
fied printer can process either PAL or NTSC video.

5600--1--19
The RM-91 hand-held remote switch is provided with the
UP-5600MD color printer. Accessories that can be used with the
printer but are not furnished with it are listed below. They are avail-
able from Sony.

RM5500 Hand-held remote, wireless or wired, similar to the one

that was furnished with the UP-5250.
FS-20 Footswitch, which works the same as with UP-5250.
FS-30 Three-way footswitch, which controls Store and Back-
space in addition to Print.
UPK-5500 An additional 4-frame memory board for NTSCand
PAL, to upgrade to 8-frame.
UPK-5501NP An additional board for PAL video.
UPK-5502SC SCSI I/F board, provided with PhotoShop• for Macin-
tosh• and Windows•.

The day-to-day operation of the UP-5600 is nearly the same as the

UP-5250; the only noticable difference will be the four-page memory
if using 1-on-1 prints. However, some button names are different and
there are more buttons (a total of 27). Some of the UP-5600 buttons
are on a tilt-down panel.
5600--1--20
1--6 Considerations for UP-5600MD Operation
All operator setups are retained when the power is cycled, except
Print Quantity returns to one.
The UP-5600MD can store three sets of parameters as User Sets. All
parameters listed in Table 2--1, Table 2--2 and Table 2--5 are saved
when a User Preset is saved.
Within each User Set, three sets of R/G/B/D/L settings can be saved
as presets.
NOTE: In the Color Adjust Setup menu display, the sets of R/G/B/
D/L settings are titled “Presets”. In the bottom of the display,
seen after pressing the MENU button, the higher level set-
tings are titled “User Sets”.

Any changes made to parameters but not stored will remain through
power off and on, etc., until a different User Set is loaded. Then the
unstored changes will be lost. (A different User Set will be loaded
when you press the USER PRESET button repeatedly until the
desired User Set number is displayed, then press the EXEC button.)

5600--1--21
To save a User Set:

1. Press the MENU button.

2. Move the highlight on the menu to User Set.
3. Select the number of User Set to save as (right cursor to
change number to 1, 2 or 3).
4. Press the EXEC button.

Automatic frame switching occurs only when the printer is controlled

from the host system or the RM-91 remote control. Manual frame
switching is necessary if you use the RM-5500 remote control or the
Sony front panel controls.

If the CAPTURE button is pressed, a new image will overwrite the

last image saved.

5600--1--22
NOTE: On the UM-9 HDI, if the printer is out of paper, the CHECK
HARDCOPY DEVICE message appears on the monitor
when the L or R PRINT is pressed. To print, first load paper,
then press the PRINT button on the printer. Do not press the
L or R PRINT buttons on the UM-9, or a new image will be
loaded into memory, erasing the existing image.

The UP-5600MD printer outputs the BUSY message at the instant it

is out of paper, ribbon, etc.

5600--1--23

1--1 UP-D7000 Information
In February of 1994, ATL began offering the following combination of
OEM products:

D Sony UP-D7000 Digital Color Printer

D Sony 3.5-inch External Optical Disk Drive
D The 3M Digital Image Recorder (DIR) with optional DIR Stand and
Film Handling Unit
D Camtronics Color Acquisition Module (CAM)

Primarily, these peripheral devices are intended to support domestic

Ultramark 9 HDI systems with the DAASR option, however, with a
CAM module some non-DAASR ultrasound systems can also be sup-
ported. These devices provide the means to print black-and-white
(B/W) and color images that have been stored digitally on 3.5-inch
optical disks by a DAASR or CAM module.

7000--1--9
NOTE: The Sony UP-D7000 is covered in this section. For informa-
tion on the 3M DIR, DIR stand, and Film Handling Unit, as
well as the Sony external optical drive, see the 3M DIR tab
in the Cameras Field Service Manual (4720-0221-xx). For
information on the CAM, see the CAMTRONICS CAM tab in
the Cameras Field Service Manual.

1--2 Considerations for Operation

To print with the UP-D7000, you use the 3M DIR controls. The
UP-D7000 can print images from color files only, not B/W files. (B/W
files stored on the optical disk are printed by the DIR.) However, if
you load the UP-D7000 with B/W ribbon and paper, it can produce
B/W prints from color image files.

7000--1--10
NOTE: The UP-D7000 can produce high-quality B/W prints from
B/W images stored by a CAM as color files (i.e., B/W images
stored via the CAM Color Store control on a CAM that is
configured for color operation). However, if a CAM is config-
ured for B/W operation and you store an image with the
Color Store command, the UP-D7000 will print a lower-qual-
ity image in green.

Three types of ink ribbon and print material combinations can be

used with the UP-D7000: for color printing, for B/W printing, and for
printing on OHP transparency material. (See Section 5 for informa-
tion on the print packs.) Note that for each ribbon type a different
type of ribbon holder, or cassette, must be used. Always load the
ribbon into the correct type of cassette, and always use the correct
combination of ribbon and print material. If the printer detects an
incompatible combination, an error message appears in the LCD
window and printing is inhibited.

7000--1--11
WARNING
Never place your hand inside the ribbon compart-
ment. The thermal head reaches high temperatures,
especially after printing.

Transferring images from the 3M DIR optical drive to the UP-D7000

takes approximately 80 seconds for six images. For the UP-D7000 to
produce a 6-on-1 hardcopy takes another 140 seconds for color, and
approximately 60 seconds for B/W.

The printing sequence is such that for each patient file on the optical
disk, all B/W images are printed first on the 3M DIR, then all color
images are printed on the UP-D7000, regardless of the order in
which the images were stored on the disk.

To print multiple copies on the UP-D7000, use the 3M DIR controls

for the first print, then use the UP-D7000 controls to print additional
copies. You can continue printing copies until another set of images
is loaded into the printer’s memory.

7000--1--12
1--3 Service Philosophy
The 3M DIR (including DIR Stand and Film Handling Unit), the Sony
UP-D7000 and 3.5-inch external optical drive, and the Camtronics
CAM are installed and serviced by 3M. Also, 3M can upgrade pre-
viously installed Bernoulli drive DIRs with a SCSI port kit to
accommodate an external optical drive.

The Sales Representative or Nova MicroSonics (NMS) Customer

Service will coordinate joint installations. In the USA, 3M Medical
Imaging Service phone numbers are 1-800-323-4118 or
1-800-328-7754. In Canada, call 1-800-668-9295. In other locations,
call the local 3M Service Technician.

7000--1--13
2 Installation
2--1 Hardware Configurations
The supported configurations for the UP-D7000 are shown in the fol-
lowing illustrations:

3 Preventive Maintenance
NOTE: The name of Preventive Maintenance (PM) has been
changed to Quality Assurance Audit (QAA). The QAA proce-
dure is exactly the same as the PM procedure and the terms
are to be considered synonymous. The change is effective
only for the domestic U.S. field service force.

Preventive Maintenance for the Sony UP-D7000 is done by 3M.

7000--3--1
4 Adjustments
4--1 Print Color
NOTE: Optimum print quality can usually be achieved by setting
RED, GREEN and BLUE to the center (0) position, setting
DARK to +1, and setting LIGHT to --3.

To adjust the color of the printouts:

1. Press the COLOR ADJUST button on the printer front panel.

The first item on the Color Adjustment menu (the control for

2--3 Cabling Data

Printer cabling requirements for the CP--700U/E are listed in
Table 1--1.

Pin-out information for the internal RGB printer cable (ATL P/N
3500-1541-04) is provided in the HDI 3000 Field Service Manual Vol-
ume 2 (P/N 4720-0015-xx). Pin-out information for the serial printer
cables (ATL P/N 2275-0326-01 and P/N 3500-2624-01) are provided
in Table 1--2 and Table 1--3.

CP700--2--5
The BNC cable (ATL P/N 2275-0176) is a center-pin to center-pin
