Behmor 1600 Plus+

Meet the extra plus for my Behmor 1600 Plus. For context: phase 1, and phase 2.

I know, I’m that good at naming things. Also, I can’t handle a Dremel. :(

Top left switch (red cover): toggles between using a computer to control the power or the
knob.
Bottom left switch: quickly kill the heating element. A lot faster when I have the gloves on.
Knob: power control, 1% steps.
LCD: will display BMT, ET, power level, and ambient temperature (technically the box’s
internal temperature).

I barely look at Behmor’s panel anymore, so I reinstated my old 3GS and use it as a wifi cam to
catch err 7.

One of the things I like about RoastLogger is the automation tool. X power at YºC, this way I
can review the result and adjust for the next batch. Notice how I use the power options available
from the Behmor, I’m testing whether the manual settings from Behmor is good enough.

Ignore the first 3 minutes, the chaff tray didn’t sit right, I needed to open the door to re-adjust.

Note: my 50% is not exactly the same as Behmor’s 50%. I’m on 2-second interval as opposed to
Behmor’s 15 second, which means, here at 50% the heating element is on for 1 second and off
for 1 second. On Behmor’s, it’s 7.5 seconds on, 7.5 seconds off.

That said, it’s a qualify thumbs up for Behmor’s manual control. One can adjust when to drop
the power instead of how much power to drop. But this will be my last roast using Behm’s
number. For example, I’d probably drop to 40% at 190ºC to reduce that hump, those without
this mod probably need to drop to 50% earlier (at 185º-187º).

I originally thought ET probe would be good enough for most to get a correlation temperature.
This no longer true. ET only good enough right up to the initial first crack, beyond that, you’re
roasting blind. Notice how the ET actually dipped below BMT towards the end, even that I still
fail to completely avoid what Matt Perger aptly called Flick of Death.

Finally, for those with a Behmor, I suggest find a batch size where you get that steadily declining
RoR. In my case, it’s around 340g-350g. It’ll take care of the first 75%-80% of the roast, up until
first crack.
