Question:

Find the differences between three definitions of Bioinformatics

Definition 1:

Bioinformatics applies methods of computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics,

and statistics to biological data, such as genome DNA sequences, or protein structures.
Bioinformaticians usually work as experts within biomedical or pharmaceutical R&D.

University of Turku (http://bioinformatics.fi/index_about_bioinformatics.html)

Definition 2:

Bioinformatics is the field of science in which biology, computer science,

and information technology merge into a single discipline. There are three important
sub-disciplines within bioinformatics: the development of new algorithms and statistics
with which to assess relationships among members of large data sets; the analysis and
interpretation of various types of data including nucleotide and amino acid sequences,
protein domains, and protein structures; and the development and implementation of
tools that enable efficient access and management of different types of information.

Definition 3:

The application of computer technology to the management of biological information.

Specifically, it is the science of developing computer databases and algorithms to
facilitate and expedite biological research. Bioinformatics is being used largely in the
field of human genome research by the Human Genome Project that has been
determining the sequence of the entire human genome (about 3 billion base pairs) and
is essential in using genomic information to understand diseases. It is also used largely
for the identification of new molecular targets for drug discovery.

Adapted from Webopedia (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/b/bioinformatics.html)

From the three definitions above, it is almost similar in every definition to explain what is
the Bioinformatics. However, the material is derivated from difference website and
difference professional aspect, they have their own definition for the Bioinformatics this
term.

For the definition 1 ,which is derivated from the University of Tempuru, it give a general
idea for the definition of the Bioinformatics to those who keen to take this course or
interested on it . However , it is tendency to Biology and who as a bioinformaticians is
an experts in biomedical or pharmaceutical R&D compare to other two definition in
Bioinformatics.

For the definition 2 , which is derivated from National Center for Biotechnology
Information which give a very good explanation in professional way. From NCBI 2001,it
tell us about development of new algorithms and statistics with which to assess
relationships among members of large data sets , for example by using the
bioinformatics software , similar analyses can be conducted in minutes or seconds with
a high-speed computer. It is so advance compares the traditional ways to obtain the
analysis. It is more systematically to help us in life.

For the definition 3, which is deriveted from the Webopedia, which are major in
computer sciences give a definition of Bioinformatics by using Human Genome Project
to talk about Bioinformatics to give a clear view to people about what the Bioinformatics
can do for them and how to apply three field knowledges, computational,
mathematically and biology to keep the project running.

In conclusion, we need to be rational he
