CHAPTER I: The Problem and its Background

Abstract

This research study was conducted to introduce the innovation of alkaline and hydrogenated water

process through alkaline water ionizer and hydrogen generator that would benefit general health.

The researchers aim to disseminate the ideas and information about drinking alkaline and

hydrogenated water that will counteract extra acidity in the body. Drinking natural alkaline and

hydrogenated water is generally considered safe, since it contains natural minerals. The pH level of

alkaline and hydrogenated water is higher than that of normal drinking water. As a result, some

proponents of alkaline and hydrogenated water say it can help to neutralize acid in the body. Water is

made up of two elements: hydrogen and oxygen. That's why it's known as H2O. The pH (Potential of

Hydrogen) level of water which ranges from 0 to 14, determines how acidic or harmful it is. The pH level

of 7 is regarded as neutral. The number "seven" is thought to be neutral or balanced between acidic and

alkaline. Water is "acidic" if it has a pH of less than 7. It is "alkaline" if the pH level ranges from 7 to 9,

while pH level of 10 to 14 is considered as not intended for human consumption. Alkaline water also

contains alkaline minerals and has a low propensity for Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP). ORP

refers to water's capacity to act as a pro- or antioxidant. The lower the ORP value, the more anti-

oxidizing the material is.

According to this site WebMD “alkaline water enthusiast claims that alkaline water has higher

hydrogen level which provides greater hydration than regular water, especially after a hard workout.”

That is why it is very essential for people to determine what kind of water that is good for consumption

and for the overall health. Alkaline water is not just an ordinary water that typically known by age.

Alkaline water as a result from water electrolysis is gaining popularity because of its benefits in disease

treatment and prevention.

Reyes 2

Water that has hydrogen gas added to it is known as hydrogen water. It has anti-inflammatory and

antioxidant effects, according to some reports. It's been touted for its ability to boost energy, delay the

aging process, and aid muscle recovery after workout. Furthermore, it demonstrated defence against

oxidative disease when consuming hydrogenated water. Antioxidants can be found in hydrogen water.

Antioxidants assist in the prevention of oxidative stress. This form of stress is caused by both internal

and external factors, such as sun exposure and industrial chemicals. Cancer and other diseases can be

caused by oxidative stress.

While some research into the health effects of hydrogen water has produced promising results, further

research and longer studies are needed before conclusions can be drawn. The FDA has listed hydrogen

water as generally recognized as safe (GRAS), which means it's safe to drink and hasn't been related to

any harmful effects.

1.0 Introduction

Water refilling station is the most promising income generating business as of this generation. It is a

kind of business for all time and for all seasons. The demand for clean and healthy drinking water is a

necessity not only during normal situation but also even times of crisis like during pandemic.

WATERRIFIC refilling station is a promising community business partner and service provider to cater

the growing number of people who desire supply of healthy drinking water.

Many people will be interested in starting a profitable business like alkaline and hydrogenated water

refilling station. This is because, if people are properly educated with regards to the benefits of drinking

alkaline or hydrogenated water, and if properly advertised and positioned in the market, it will provide

stable income to the manufacturer or a supplier of alkaline and hydrogenated water.

One of the reasons why we advocate this business is to make people realize the importance of a

healthy drinking water that is essential to a human health and human life. We gathered data and

information to support our initiatives and to come up with a solid proof how salient our study why we

choose this subject for our marketing research.

Reyes 4

1.1 Business / Industry Overview

Due to management problems in water utilities coupled by poor environmental conditions and

occurrence of cholera outbreaks in some areas of the Philippines, a portion of the population have

shifted their preference to alternative sources of drinking water. The demand at the water refilling

stations and water stores that sell purified, mineral, alkaline and hydrogenated drinking water is now

increasing. The quality of these purified, mineral, alkaline and hydrogenated drinking water conforms to

the national standards for drinking water and is even better than the quality of water produced by

traditional water supply systems in terms of removed impurities. To ensure water safety and prevent

waterborne diseases, the Philippine government is regulating the operation of water refilling stations.

Critical components are required to comply with sanitation standards and should be adequately

monitored. These include the water source, the building itself, the water purification system, the

personnel, and handling of water product are factors to be considered.

The Philippines with a population of 109,581,078million (2020 estimates) is endowed with rich natural

resources including water. With total available freshwater resource is at 145,900 Million Cubic Meters

(MCM) per year based on 80% probability for surface water, and groundwater recharge or extraction at

20,000 MCM per year which is essential to the country’s economic development and in the achievement

of its “Millennium Development Goals” (MDG). Its traditional water supply facilities include piped water

systems, communal taps, and point sources are among the conventional water supply solutions.

Alternative schemes, such as vended water, bottled water, household use of water purifiers, and water
Reyes 5

refilling stations are available for population with no access to water supply systems and for the served

population with doubts about the water quality of water supply systems.

Based on the foregoing, the people’s preference on water refilling station as an alternative source of

drinking water is on demand. In the capital region of Metro Manila, water supply coverage is relatively

high at 95% by year 2030. However, this status does not exempt the area from having cases of

waterborne diseases. A cholera outbreak occurred in 2003 in one community inside Metro Manila.

Health authorities traced the cause of the outbreak to be contaminated and illegally connected water

pipes. Another water quality problem was the yellow discoloration of the water supply which occurred

before the privatization of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System. This experience affected

the confidence of the consumers in using the water for drinking purposes. In the search for better water

quality, they therefore tried other options such as the use of household water purifiers, resorting to

bottled water and patronizing water refilling stations. These practices can be observed also in other

cities of the country like Marikina City.

Over the years, as the demand for cleaner water becomes higher, the price of household water

purifiers and bottled water has become prohibitive. Water refilling stations managed by private

entrepreneurs offer a cheaper and more convenient solution to the public’s drinking water needs than

bottled water or the use of household filters. There are now more than 20,000 water refilling

stations have proliferated nationwide, where up to 40% of households nationwide and 60% of

Metro Manila residents buy drinking water. They sell purified water of comparable quality with bottled

water at a lower price. For example, the current price per gallon of refilled purified water in Metro Manila

ranges from P 35 to P 40 per 5-gallon container or about P 2.50 to P 6.00 per liter while the bottled

water is sold at P 15.00 to P 28.00 per liter. Household filters, on the other hand, cost roughly about P

5,000 to P 25,000 per unit depending on the brand.

Reyes 6

Unlike other seasonal businesses, a water refilling station serving purified, mineral including alkaline

and hydrogenated drinking water can be profitable all year round. It's relatively easier to handle

compared to other businesses since the product base is just water.

Over and above, water refill station is a profitable business, and it is open for any aspiring

entrepreneur to come in and establish his or her business. Anyone could choose to start on a small

scale servicing a community or choose to start on a large scale with several outlets in key cities

nationwide.

1.2 Background of the study

Waterrific Refilling Station is a type of water refilling station that provides a healthy drinking water with

a pH level that ranges from 7 to 9 which is beneficial for all ages and would benefit human’s general

health. This Alkaline and Hydrogenated Water is processed through an alkaline water ionizer and

hydrogen generator.

Around 500 B.C., the first known domestic filter appeared when the Greek scientist Hippocrates

invented the so-called Hippocratic sleeve, which consisted of simple cloth back filter according to

Pelican News (2014).

However, as stated by Alkaline Water Plus (2008) “Hippocrates, called the Father of Medicine,

observed that people frequently recovered from illnesses after bathing in certain locations. He developed

a theory that the mineral content of the water may have contributed to this healing effect. His theory

grew into the treatment method called balneology, or the treatment of illnesses using baths”.
Reyes 7

The history of alkaline water ionizers began in the early 1900’s according to Molecular Hydrogen

Institute (2013). Research on electrolyzed water started around 1931 in Japan where it gained popularity

in the 1950’s. Around this time, the water was touted as having “healing effects.”

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study aimed to establish awareness of new alkaline and hydrogenated water. The researchers

want to give the awareness that drinking healthy and clean water like Waterrific, alkaline and

hydrogenated water is good for the health of everybody. It will give a lot of benefits and certainly can

avoid diseases get from drinking unhealthy water.

This study is conducted to benefit the following:

Institution

The result of the research could serve as awareness for the school institution regarding the benefits

they can get when they prefer to use alkaline and hydrogenized water for their staff daily consumptions

and other school facilities.

Teachers

This study will benefit the teachers through the new leaning about alkaline water and could use in

the future studies for science and technology. This refers to the professional teachers who are always
Reyes 11

have a lot of paper works that need to consume more water to avoid dehydration and dinking alkaline

water counteracts the acidity level of our body.

Parents

The research benefits the parents to become more aware and have knowledge about the benefits of

the alkaline water. This study will give idea for the parents to become more sensitive when giving water

for their children. Who are always taking care about the health of their children especially the fluid intake

that they need to consume whether in their home or outside areas.

Students

This study helps the students to spread the awareness of the importance of drinking safe water and

its benefit from their body. Alkaline water can revitalize the energy that is needed especially for students

who has daily activities in school. It also helps to maintain the good immune system of the body.

Researchers

The result of the study can serve as a basis for the further study of drinking Alkaline and

hydrogenated water for the present researchers or for the future researchers.

1.8 Hypothesis

There is insufficient scientific evidence to support the use of alkaline water as a cure for any disease.

Medical professionals advise against accepting any marketing statements. Natural alkaline water, which

contains natural minerals, is commonly considered safe to drink.

Reyes 12

A glass of alkaline water any other day would have no noticeable effect on your body. Drinking a

gallon of alkaline water every day, on the other hand, forces the body to work harder to preserve its pH,

which ensures your body can produce more gastric juices and digestive enzymes over time.

CHAPTER 2: Review of Related Literature

2.1 Related Studies

Foreign

Gary Logsdon (2019) conducted a study entitled “Microbiology and Drinking Water Filtration” which

connects the information about the research on water filtration. He stated that studies have been

performed to developed information for filtration plants to remove suspended matter in general, and

asbestos fibres from water. According to him filtration studies related to removal of microorganisms have

generally been motivated by the need to learn about the removal of pathogens or indicator organisms, or

both. Reducing the risks of waterborne disease has been a goal of microbiologically related filtration

research for nearly 100 years.

Dr. Nicholas Perricone (2014) conducted a study entitled “How to Multi – Task with Alkaline Water”

which aimed to disseminate the information that hydrogen water is the next big thing in wellness.

According to him drinking hydrogen water can give more energy, slow the aging process (including its

effect on the skin), and even speed up the recovery of your muscle after work out.
Reyes 13

Massimiliano Magro et al (2016) conducted a study about “Alkaline Water and Longevity: A Murine

Study” which derived and comprehend information regarding the availability and is mainly proposed for

electrolyte supplementation during intensive perspiration. According to his early studies on animal

models reported that alkaline water supplementation may exert positive effects on body weight

improvement and development in offspring. He also added that even biochemical markers were

analyzed, suggesting that alkaline ionized water intake can cause elevation of metabolic activity.

According to Robert Settineri (2016) “Hydrogen is the smallest and most abundant element, and in its

molecular form H2 is colour less, odour less, tasteless and virtually non-toxic. For some time H2 was not

considered a bioactive molecule, but a recent study found that inhaled hydrogen gas protects the brain

against ischemia reperfusion injury and stroke, and this was likely due to an antioxidant mechanism that

reduces free radical damage. Hydrogen can be delivered by gas inhalation, injection of hydrogen-rich

saline solutions or by drinking hydrogen rich water (hydrogenized water). Using these methods of

administration H2 has been shown to have various preventive and therapeutic effects useful in

emergency and critical care medicine”.

Local

Fiona Patricia Escandor (2010) composed an article in Philstar Global entitled “Alkaline Water” which

she stated that ionized water is more popularly known as alkaline water. According to her, unlike regular

water that has a neutral pH of seven (7), which means has an equal concentration of hydrogen and
Reyes 14

oxygen, alkaline is higher on the pH scale. She also added that alkaline water is attested to improve the

conditions of people with arthritis, allergies, indigestion, gastritis, high blood pressure and obesity.

In the study of Magtibay (2011), water refilling stations can be a good source of safe drinking water in

the Philippines. Purified water can meet the aesthetic standards easily detectable by the people in terms

of taste, odor and color. The efficient water purification processes can make the quality of water superior

to the traditional water systems. However, the risk of contamination is possible if the handling practices

are not closely monitored.

2.2 Related Literature

Foreign

The scarcity of clean and safe drinking water is one the major causes of human mortality in the

developing world. Potable or drinking water is defined as having acceptable quality in terms of its

physical, chemical, and bacteriological parameters so that it can be safety used for drinking and cooking

(Boutilier MSH, Lee J, Chambers V, Venkatesh V, Karnik R, 2014).

According to Kaizen philosophy (2010), a problem occurred in their business. Although the franchised

water store has an established name in the industry, there are some difficulties in marketing it in the

area of Bacoor. Based from the conversations with different residents of the area, it seems like the price

above quality is highly considered.

Local
Reyes 15

According to Darren Diaz cited by Nicole Arcano (2018), water transforms into “hydrogen water” when

hydrogen dissolved into it via high pressure. It can also be created by dissolving magnesium metal in

water, producing magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen. As a one – step process that has a wide array of

benefits for all types of people, hydrogen-molecule “infused” water is basically the “levelling-up” of

drinking water without having any harmful or poisonous effects (Tiffanny Neri, 2018).

CHAPTER 3: Research of Methodology

CHAPTER 4: Project Management Design

The art of project management is based on the fact that projects are essentially about people

completing tasks. Project management necessitates a thorough understanding of human nature as well

as the ability to employ sufficient interpersonal skills. This method is structured to assist project

managers and teams in executing key process steps such as assessing the true need, identifying the

project goal, designing a project execution plan, and retaining control during the project. The creation of

a collection of graphic tools, documents, and techniques, all aimed at promoting project completion, is

the process's basic premise.

4.1 Market Analysis

The term "market research" refers to a quantitative and qualitative evaluation of a market. It examines

the market's size, both in terms of volume and value, as well as the different consumer segments and

purchasing habits, competition, and the economic climate in terms of entry barriers and regulation.

Market research is the method of personally interviewing potential consumers to determine the feasibility

of a new service or product. Market research enables a business to identify its target market and obtain

views and other input from customers about their interest in a product or service.

4.2 The Competition

Competition is a rivalry between businesses that offer similar goods and services to maximize sales,

profit, and market share. Market rivalry motivates businesses to use the four elements of the marketing

mix, also known as the four P's (Product, Price, Promotion and Place) to maximize sales volume. True

market competition is required for the entrepreneurial spirit to flourish within a nation.

Competitive analysis shows the profile of the business and its competitor. It includes the strategic

methods used by both businesses and their approach plan to influence the buying decisions of the target

audience. It also includes the SWOT analysis of the business that states the strength, weaknesses,

opportunities, and threats that may affect to the consumer behavior in purchasing the product that going

to offer in the marketplace. It is important to analyze very well the full detail of the business plan to

overcome the possible unforeseen mishap that may occur in the current and future of the business.

CHAPTER 7: Observation, Conclusion and Recommendation

7.1 Observation

The purpose of this paper is to discuss observation, particularly participant observation, as a tool for

collecting data in qualitative research studies. Aspects of observation discussed herein include

questions and responses of participant observation, the purposes for which individual consume an

alkaline and hydrogenated water.

Alkaline ionized water generated by water electrolysis has received increasing attention because of its

benefits in treatment prevention of disease. According to the survey, the participants have different

perspective regarding on drinking water. We also conclude that most of the individuals are disagree in

drinking water with a pH level lower than 7 because it could cause skin disease. Most of the participants

agreed that alkaline and hydrogenated water is the healthiest drinking water.

On the contrary there are other respondents believe that Alkaline and Hydrogenated can prevent skin

disease. A huge difference can be seen in our research in terms of number of individuals who are in

favor and against the profile variables that were used in the study. In addition, a number of respondents

strongly agree that by drinking hydrogenated water, it demonstrated protection against oxidative

disease. Our recent study about alkaline and hydrogenated water shows that there are individuals who

are already aware of its existence and are actually using it at this time.

Individual who participated in the survey ages from 18 to 35. Female respondents are greater than

male respondents who participated on this survey. Due to current situation, we conducted the survey via
Reyes 86

online. The questionnaires were sent via Google Forms. Since it was the most efficient and it is also

user-friendly, it was easy for the participants to utilize it. The participants were able to submit their

responses after two days.

According to the survey we conducted, the participants were neutral to agree about the health

benefits that alkaline and hydrogenated water gives. It was 32% to 46% approval from the participants.

In addition, most of the respondent strongly agrees that alkaline water is the healthiest drinking water.

The survey clearly shows a positive response from the possible consumers. There are 40% among the

50 participants who are familiar and are using purified water. This can be one of the threats in

introducing the alkaline water to the market. Nevertheless, the percentage in the survey is positive

enough to entice customers in switching their regular drinking water.

7.2 Conclusion

Most of the respondents answered that the pH level of a healthy drinking water is 7-8 and agreed that

alkaline water and Hydrogenated is the healthiest drinking water. Purified water is the most consumed

water by the respondents. The researchers conclude that there will be a lot of possible consumers of

Waterrific and Purified water will be the possible threat in introducing Alkaline & Hydrogenated Water.

7.3 Recommendation

Information dissemination plays a vital role in doing business. The active distribution and

spreading awareness to target market or end – users will entice them to use a certain product. For them,

knowing the pros and cons is very important.

Reyes 87

This study helps to improve the quality of the water people may intake every day. The idea is that

drinking alkaline water counteracts extra acidity in the body. Drinking natural alkaline water is generally

considered safe, since it contains natural minerals. To support the health benefits of alkaline and

hydrogenised water in the future events.

The water is one of the most important needs of the people that must maintain safe and clean. With

the help of the Alkaline water ionizer and hydrogen generator the need for clean water is a big impact

not only for today but for the generation to come.

This research may support the benefits of ionized water through knowing that oxidation reduction

potential is the ability of the water to act as pro or antioxidant. Meaning, the negative the oxidation

reduction potential value is the more anti-oxidizing it is. Alkaline water is negative with oxidation

reduction potential that makes the water more in oxygen and hydrogen.

For the Institutions

The result of the research could serve as awareness for the school institution regarding the benefits

they can get when they prefer to use alkaline and hydrogenized water for their staff daily consumptions

and other school facilities.

For the Teachers

This study will benefit the teachers through the new leaning about alkaline water and could use in

the future studies for science and technology. This refers to the professional teachers who are always

have a lot of paper works that need to consume more water to avoid dehydration and dinking alkaline

water counteracts the acidity level of our body.

For the Parents

Reyes 88

The research benefits the parents to become more aware and have knowledge about the benefits of

the alkaline water. This study will give idea for the parents to become more sensitive when giving water

for their children. Who are always taking care about the health of their children especially the fluid intake

that they need to consume whether in their home or outside areas.

For the Students

This study helps the students to spread the awareness of the importance of drinking safe water and

its benefit from their body. Alkaline water can revitalize the energy that is needed especially for students

who has daily activities in school. It also helps to maintain the good immune system of the body.

For the Future Researchers

The result of the study can serve as a basis for the further study of drinking Alkaline and

hydrogenated water for the present researchers or for the future researchers.
