PARTS OF THIS MODULE

Expectations This will provide what you will be able to know upon
completing the lessons in the SLeM.

Pre-test This will assess your prior knowledge and the concepts to
be mastered throughout the lesson.

Looking Back This section will measure the skills that you learned and
to your Lesson understand from the previous lesson.

Brief This section will give you an overview of the lesson.

Introduction

Activities These are activities designed to develop your critical

thinking and other competencies that you need to
master. This can be done solely or with your partner
depending on the nature of the activity.

Remember This section summarizes the concepts and applications of

the lessons

Check your This will verify how you learned from the lesson.
Understanding

Post-test This will measure how much you have learned from the
entire SLeM

1
Expectations
In this module, you will understand more on research

Specifically, this module will help you to:

1. give the meaning of Research.

2. identify and explain the characteristics of Research; and

3. give the importance of research in our society.

Let us start your journey in learning more about research, its nature,
and characteristics. I am sure you are ready and excited to answer the
Pretest. Smile and cheer up!

Pre-Test

A. Choose the letter of the best answer. Write your answers on a

separate sheet of paper.

1. Which statement gives the complete definition of Research?

A. A study or plan that results into new product.

B. A scientific investigation that uses scientific method.

C. The use of experimentation to come up with a new material.

D. A scientific investigation that results into new facts and discoveries.

2. The characteristic of research that shows conduct of investigation using

the scientific method.

a. Cyclical c. Logical

b. Empirical d. Methodical

2
3. Which characteristic shows that research is based on valid procedures
and principles.

a. Analytical c. Logical

b. Cyclical d. Replicability

4. Improvement in crop yield and animal production is the target of

research in what field in science?

a. Agriculture c. Manufacturing

b. Industries d. Medicine

5. The development of tool/device that makes production fast and cheap

is the aim of research in what field?

a. Aerospace c. manufacturing

b. agriculture d. Telecommunication

Looking Back
In Research I, you have learned the Basic Science Process skills,
scientific attitudes, and steps of the scientific method. You were able to make
a simple science experiment and write a scientific report about it. Can you still
remember these skills and attitudes? Let us find out by answering this 5-item
quiz

Direction: Read the statements carefully and identify whether it is true or

false. Write your answers on your Research notebook.

1. Scientific method is the step by step process of finding solutions to

problems.

2. Scientific method has 5 steps which includes observation, gathering data,

making a hypothesis, experimentation and making a conclusion.

3
3. Curiosity is a scientific attitude that allows researchers to give truthful
results about the experiment made.

4. Honesty is shown when the researcher accepts the idea given by others.

5. Hypothesis is an intelligent guess/solution to a problem.

It is nice to know that you can still remember the Scientific method
Good job!

Brief Introduction

In our everyday life, solving problems and finding solutions are always a
part. From the time we wake up and think of how are we going to fix our bed,
the kind of breakfast that will give us energy for the whole day and the dress
that we will wear for the virtual class. Choices serves as our solution. In this
module, you will be learning about the nature of research, its characteristics
and importance in our society.

Research as defined in Merriam Webster Dictionary “is an investigation

or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts.

From Oxford Dictionary, Research is the “The systematic investigation

and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new
conclusions”.

In both definitions, Research is defined as an investigation used to

establish new facts about something. Perform the given activities to
understand and explain deeply what Research is.

4
Activities
ACTIVITY 1.1 - RESEARCH IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Direction: Below are situations that require use of research. Identify the
problem and probable solution in each illustration. Explain also how
you will solve the problem.

5
(1) (2) (3)

Problem (1) (2) (3)

Solution:

How will you solve

the problem?

Guide Questions:

1. Do you experience the same problems?

2. Are the solutions given by your classmates same with your solution?
3. How were you able to come up with the solutions in each problem?
4. Relate this activity with Research.

Activity 1.2 – Characteristics of Research

Direction: Examine and match the characteristics of Research in column
A and its meaning in column B in your notebook.
A B

A. Research designs and procedures are repeated to

1. EMPIRICAL come up with the most accurate result.

B. Research exhibits careful and precise judgment.

2. LOGICAL

C. Research analyzes proven analytical procedures

6
in gathering data.
3. CYCLICAL

D. Research is based on the direct observation or

4. ANALYTICAL experience.

E. Research starts with a problem and ends with a

5. REPLICABILITY problem.

F. Research is based on valid procedures and

6. CRITICAL principles.

G. Research is conducted using the scientific

7. METHODICAL method.

Guide Questions:
1. Discuss how each characteristic is shown in a research.
2. What is the importance of knowing these characteristics?

Activity 1.3 – Importance of Research

Direction: Examine the illustrations and give the importance of research in our
society.
1.

7
2.

3.

Guide questions:

1. Upon describing the illustrations, is Research important in our

society?
2. Relating research with the pandemic we are experiencing right now,
give the role of research.
3. Cite other fields where research is important.

Remember
 Research is defined as an orderly manner or investigation that aims to
find a solution for a certain problem.
 Research utilizes the Scientific method.
 Research has the following characteristics: empirical, replicability,
logical, cyclical, analytical, methodical and critical.
8
 Research is important in our society. It contributes to the advancement
of Science in terms of manufacturing and industries, it finds cure to
diseases and provides new knowledge that can be used to develop
tools that will make man’s work lighter and easier.

Checking Your Understanding

1. Define Research in your own words.

2. Give two examples of Research made currently in the Philippines in the
field of Agriculture and Medicine. Briefly explain its contribution.
3. If you were to choose a field that you would like to enhance or develop
with the use of Research, what would it be and why?

Post-Test
