Dear Parents,

The Schools Division of Calamba City is one with every Filipino family in coping with the
demands of our modern times.
The current situation we are experiencing right now has caused immediate changes in our
lives. Above anything else, our priority is your child’s health and safety, but this does not prevent us
from making education happen. Even if your child will miss regular schooling this year, we want to
assure you that no student will be left behind, because learning is possible anytime, anywhere.
Thus, we present to you this Self Learning Module (SLM) to help your child meet the most
essential learning competencies in every subject and grade level, and will serve as your child’s major
learning tool, whether your child opts for online, modular or blended learning modality. The learning
activities in this SLM are arranged to lead your child to think critically, act skillfully, and reflect deeply
on each lesson and practice into real life skills. Most importantly, this SLM promotes self-paced
learning as your child can always review the least understood lessons as often as he/she pleases.
Since the students will be seeing their teachers less than before and will be staying with you
at home more often, then we wish to request one thing from you: please encourage your child not to
stop learning. Consider your child like our hero and fellow Calambeño Jose Rizal who, despite his
studies overseas, would always recall the most significant learning experience he had – his lessons
with his parents.

understand that you already miss going to school and spending fun, learning moments with your
teacher in front and your classmates just right beside you. Unfortunately, we have to wait a bit further
for the situation to go back to normal mode. But one thing is for sure—the opportunity for your
learning cannot wait any longer.
By this time, you have already chosen your learning modality. Is your access to internet
strong enough for online learning mode, or does your lack of resources make you prefer modular
learning? Well, you do not have to worry as to what your case may be, because even if you cannot
come to school, SDO Calamba City is bringing the school right in your homes.

necessary for every subject in your grade level. Your teachers have worked hard in designing these
Learning Packets, and we guarantee that through this, everyday will be a wonderful learning
experience for you.
Please take time to read and do the activities in these Self Learning Module (SLM) as if you
are reporting in school. Set a regular study schedule for you as much as possible, but keep in mind
that these SLM will enable you to learn at your own pace. If you don’t understand a particular lesson,
the SLM would not mind you flipping back the pages over and over again for review. Also, remember
to keep in touch with your teachers. Send them a message through your online sessions or write them

I What I need to know?

In this module, we will learn to recognize and show scientific attitudes. You
will be enlightened that some of the skills and attitudes are essential for solving
problems effectively. This lesson is designed to introduce students to the important
habits of mind that one must develop in order to solve problems effectively. Students
should have many opportunities to develop and utilize these skills and attitudes in
the context of scientific investigation, as well as within other disciplines. Furthermore,
this module will help you to have thorough understanding of importance of
recognizing scientific attitudes.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will enable to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. determine the scientific attitudes.
2. have realistic expectations of scientist; and
3. recognize the scientific attitudes to be emulated.

I What is new?
Researchers investigate the world in so many ways. In different science
investigations, they may use different methods and be guided by different theories
and hypotheses. The acquisition of a scientific attitude is one of the most important
outcomes of science or research. Have you ever wondered how scientists discover
their scientific breakthroughs? Will it be possible for a Grade 7 learner like you to do
scientific research the way your favorite scientist or researcher did?

Children examine a patch of grass and investigate the creatures in it. With
sheer amazement and wonder, the question leads to another. Fascination ensues
with each discovery. Asking the question “Why?” is the springboard to the universe
to the universe of scientific discovery. Curiosity and observation are the start of
science and all scientists have that curious child in their hearts and minds. Scientists
always ask questions and often wonder about the world. At first, these questions
come at random. Later, the questions become more focused and direct, enabling the
scientist to know what data to gather and to plan how to answer these questions
through experiments. Scientists usually have a small notebook or journal on which to
write down their thoughts, the data they collected, their observations, and the ideas
they generate.

Scientist Inventions/Discoveries

Photon, also known as light quantum, is a tiny


energy packet of electromagnetic radiation. This
concept originated in Albert Einstein’s explanation
of the photoelectric effect, in which he proposed the
existence of discrete energy packets during the

relativity and the concept of mass-energy

of Western thought, but the subject he most

foundation for modern classical mechanics.
 The discovery of gravitational force gave us
the ability to predict the movement

 His discovery of the calculus gave us a
potent mathematical tool, aiding the precise

The printing press, a device that applies pressure
to transfer ink, was invented around 1440 by the
German Johann Gutenberg.

The greatest mathematician of ancient times, and
one of the greatest of all time, Archimedes was also a
physicist, inventor, astronomer and engineer. He is
most famous for discovering the law of
hydrostatics, sometimes known as 'Archimedes'
principle', stating that a body immersed in fluid
loses weight equal to the weight of the amount of
fluid it displaces. He created the principle by which
the volume of an irregularly shaped object can be

through the ages

Although more celebrated as an artist, Leonardo da


Vinci also had an astounding scientific mind. For
example, his “Vitruvian Man” drawing is an example
of ideal human proportions. As an engineer, Da

conceptually inventing the parachute,
the helicopter, an armored fighting vehicle, the use

and pioneers of aviation. In 1903 the Wright
brothers achieved the first powered, sustained and
controlled airplane flight; they surpassed their own
milestone two years later when they built and flew

geologist and biologist, best known for his
contributions to the science of evolution. His
proposition that all species of life have descended
over time from common ancestors is now widely

This lesson will briefly describe the scientific attitudes.   It will also help the
learner determine some important attitudes that are essential for solving problems
effectively. Science Education aims to new substance that enabled him to think like
scientists and emphasis would be expected on the development of attitude that good
scientists are able to display. Shaping students’ attitudes, behaviors, and motivations
is necessary today for without these broader skills and strengths, students will be
unprepared for the challenges they, and their world, will face. Development of proper
scientific attitude and values toward Science are important elements that may
influence students’ performance.
Scientific attitude is probably the most important factor in doing
research. Scientific attitude means multiple character traits. An important aspect of a
personality of someone who wants to be successful in the field of science.

Attitudes and Values a Scientist Must Possess

A scientist is a person who is researching or has expert-level knowledge in a field


of science. There are several characteristics that are common among people who
decide to pursue a career as a scientist, characteristics that lend themselves to
carrying out the kind of work scientists do. These include strong observational skills,
curiosity, logic, creativity, skepticism, and objectivity.

There are so many ways of being a scientist, it would be impossible to list them
all. Scientists can work in a laboratory, using theoretical equations and models; for a
company or the government; cataloguing plants and animals in the rainforest; as
astronauts in space; or as educators.

Key Characteristics of Scientists

There are certain characteristics that are useful or necessary to be a good scientist.

A scientist is curious about the world. Curiosity enables a scientist to try to


discover more about the things around him or her.

A scientist is logical and systematic. The attitude enables a scientist to plan


his or her work in an orderly way.

A scientist is open-minded. Open-mindedness is an attitude that allows a


scientist to look at other possibilities.

A scientist is intellectually honest. This attitude allows a scientist to recognize


the work done by other scientists before him or her. This attitude is also shown by
reporting data truthfully.

A scientist works hard and is persistent. This attitude enables a scientist to


continue with a project despite obstacles and failures.

A scientist does not jump to conclusions. This attitude enables the scientist to
withhold his or her judgment until the tests have been completed. This means that
scientists do not accept ideas until after an exhaustive investigation has been
performed.

A scientist is creative and thinks critically. Being creative enables a scientist to


come up with new concepts which lead to discoveries that traditional scientists have
overlooked.

A scientist tries new approaches to arrive at better solutions. Almost every


day, advances in science and technology enable people to improve ways of doing
things. From these new ideas and concepts, a scientist can determine what methods
or techniques are best adopted.

When it comes to science, diversity makes all the difference. Nowadays,


scientists from many different cultures and backgrounds collaborate on common
goals. But despite their many differences, they all have something in common. That
each one of them knows how to behave as a professional scientist! In other words,

recognized as a serious and active professional?
Being a scientist is a matter of vocation for many. However, it is important to
remember that it is a challenging career. It requires a lot of effort and dedication.
