THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

A setting spray is a fine mist you apply after you do make up, and it’s a fixing
spray that helps add a layer of protection, making your make up last longer. It usually
contains polymers with alcohol that help hold the make up in place and resist sweat and
humidity. Make up setting is like a topcoat for makeup, which can save make up all day
long. It is a beauty essential as the last step of your make up routine ton prevent the
makeup from fading quickly. It is a liquid contained in a small spray bottle. Since that is
work of a fix spray, cosmetologists tend to find the best ingredients to make this more
effective. This research serves to find out the effectiveness of aloe vera and lagundi
extract in making a fix spray.

An aloe vera is a succulent plant species of the genus aloe. The name was
derived from the latin as aloe and vera “true”. And evergreen perennial, it originates
from the arabian peninsula but grows wild in tropical, semi- tropical, and arid climates
around the world. It is used in many consumer products, including beverages, skin
lotion, cosmetic, ointments or in the form of gel for minor burns and sunburns. There is
little clinical evidence for the effectiveness or safety of aloe vera extract as a cosmetic
or tropical drug. It is cultivated for commercial products, mainly as a tropical treatment
used over centuries. The aloe vera plant has been known and used for centuries for its
beauty, medicinal and skin care properties. 2000 years ago, the Greek scientists
regarded aloe vera as the universal panacea. The Egyptian called aloe "the plants of
immortality" (Amar Surjushe et al, 2007). Today, the aloe vera plants has been used for
various purposes in dermatology and cosmetology.

Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree, five- leaved chaste
tree, or horseshoe vitex, or nisinda is a large aromatic shrub with quadrangular, densely
whitish, tometose branchlets. It is widely used in folk medicine, particularly in south and
southeast Asia.

Lagundi has been used for centuries by local population in the Philippines for it's
medical properties, but these were not described based on the Spanish book written by
Colin 1990, Filipinos regularly treat wounds and as a pain medication. In addition, he
also found that they had vast traditional knowledge on the different medicinal properties
of each part of the plant. For example, while leaves are commonly used to ease
headaches and cleanse ulcers, seed are used to treat skin diseases. Lagundi is also
commonly used prevent and treat worm infestation and is used to treat skin disorders
such as eczema, ringworm, etc. also, it is usually used as an anti-bacterial wash to treat
wounds and promote fast healing.

Both raw materials are beneficial for external use therefore, due to these
benefits, this research serves as a way to determine whether it can be put into the
market as a cosmetic.

Statement of the Problem

This study intends to determine the effects of aloe vera and lagundi extract as fix
spray. Specifically, it aims to answer the following question:

1. What are the effects of aloe vera and lagundi as fix spray?

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter provides a review of selected literature and related studies that
helped studies that helped in the conception Lization of the study on the effectivity of
aloe vera and lagundi extract as fix spray.

Foreign Studies

Aloe is one of the most prolific ingredients and recognizable botanical names in
all of skin care according to Marci Robin (2022). Widely available- you can find it potted
in its bottled extracts at virtually any CVS- aloe vera (the most commonly used species
of the aloe genus when it comes to beauty and personal care products) has been used
on the skin for centuries, New York City based board-certified dermatologist Marisa
Garshick, MD, says, there is limited scientific evidence and research on the role of aloe
vera in skin care." That said and despite being considered a controversial ingredient by
same, it is widely believed by experts and average shoppers alike that aloe vera
benefits are undeniable." Aloe is well known for its ability to help provide anti-
inflammatory and soothing benefits to the skin, hence why it’s so commonly used to
help treat sunburn," cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson tells Allure." It can also hydrate
and provide antioxidant benefits. Because of this, it is being used more and more in skin
care and hair care." Weather you've found yourself a little overexposed to the sun or
you're simply in search of something calming for your sensitive skin, there’s always a
good reason to keep aloe vera around and we asked skin experts to explain exactly
why.

Aloe vera is a species of the aloe plant that grows around the world. Perhaps
even in a pot a few feet away from you as you're reading this, distinctively spiky leaves,
what's in those leaves make it a very desirable topical treatment. The leaf of aloe vera
plant is rich in water, particularly in the inner most layer of the leaf, so it helps to hydrate
the skin and lock in moisture, "Dr. Garshick explains." The sugars, also known as
mucopolysaccharides, help to retain moisture in skin.
Drew Barrymore famously applied a piece of aloe vera "meat" (basically a chunk
of the inner part of the leaf) to an irritated area of skin on her face and said it drastically
reduced redness in a short time-span a claim that dermatologists don't shoot down."
Aloe is actually a natural antiseptic agent, meaning it stops or slows the growth of mic-
organisms and helps prevent. infections," Stacy Chimento, MD, a board-certified
dermatologist in south Florida, tells Allure." Aloe can also help a bug bite heal faster and
reduce itching, swelling and pain." Potential health importance and benefits of Lagundi
leaves (2021) are commonly used to prevent and treat worm infestation and is used to
treat skin disorders such as eczema, ringworm etc. Medical Health Guide. Lagundi vitex
negundo herbal medicine. Retrieved from the Medical Health Guide website: [Last

Rebecca dancer (2021) stated that aside from being a staple in your mother’s
medicine cabinet for sunburned skin, aloe vera has been used by different civilizations
for centuries for a range of skin care, health and medical purposes. A cactus plant that
naturally grows in arid climates, the succulent-like leaves of the aloe plants house a
clear gel that’s home to more than 75“(and perhaps up to 2002) different active
compounds, including vitamins, minerals, sugar, enzymes, salicylic acids and amino
acids. Suffice it to say all of these components have been show to provide a wide array
of benefits for skin care and beyond .It soothe sunburn, its helps fade dark spot, it
moisturizes skin ,It’s makes a restorative scalp mask ,it provides healthy aging benefits
for skin ,It can help clear up acne ,It soothes psoriasis, and it may help fade stretch
mark.

According to the Altura Internal, Aloe vera is the most popular herb used in the
word of natural health. It is used in thousands of different supplements and is major
highlight in the field of organic and conventional cosmetology and dermatology.
However, aloe vera is by no means fad product, it was considered the secret to
cleopatra’s astonishing beauty and in addition to promoting beauty, was used to heal
infections, promote digestion and detoxification. Today, many of the marvelous healing
and beauty benefits of aloe are confirmed by science in fact, one of the most fascinating
feature of this highly intelligent plant, is its immunomodulation abilities- it can identify
mutated cell, viruses and infections in the body, which it then aids the immune system in
terminating. Aloe is actually and herd and one of the most fascinating plants on earth. It
is quite a miracle substance you might even consider it a panacea, a true cure- all
substance. This plant demonstrates highly impressive properties as well as an
extraordinary nutritional profile. Aloe vera contains 75 known active constituents
including, vitamins A,C and ,enzymes, minerals, complex sugar, salicylic, lignin, acids,
amino acids and more. Most importantly, aloe vera contains an abundance of medicinal
constituents such as polysaccharides, saponins, and even hormones. Aloe vera also
offers Antioxidant, vitamins, Enzymes, Amino acid, Minerals, Beneficial Sugar, Antara
quinines, Fatty acids, hormones, Saponins and Lignans.

-according to the dermatologist 209 you can use aloe vera on your on your face
up to twice a day its pack with amazing amino acids, enzymes, mineral and vitamins
that makes it one of most powerful skin healing plants in the world. Aloe vera repairs so
many different kinds of skin condition that it would be a waste not to use it every day.
Just get be mindful to not go overboard with aloe vera, if you’re using it straight from the
plant. Because it acts like an exfoliator, over use can result in skin too oily or too dry,
depending on your skin type. Products infuse with the plant extract such as the aloe
vera cocoon Facial scrub soap by Roeng and aloe vera Facial Cleansing foam, are
great for daily application, for both day and evening routines. Aloe vera is also known to
sooth and condition you hair and scalp, though it does much more than that. In fact, the
gel contains glycoproteins and polysaccharides that can stimulate new hair and skin
growth so if you’re looking for a natural way to stimulate hair growth aloe vera can help.
Because of it’s anti-inflammatory properties, aloe vera is also effective in treating
dandruff, as if lessens the itchiness that results in a flaky scalp and the prote olytic
enzymes repair the dead skin cells on the scalp. The gel also contains antibacterial and
antifungal properties that help to prevent dandruff.

- Angela Betsaida B. Laguipo, BSN(2018) stated that aloe vera has been widely
used as a potent natural remedy for a lot of condition, including insect bites, Aloe vera
(Aloe barbadensis miller) is a succulent plant used in alternative medicine with a total of
420 various plant species of aloe vera, it has been popular in Indian medicine for the
treatment of many conditions. For centuries, the plant has gained immense popularity
for its beauty, health, skin care and medicinal properties. The name aloe vera was
derived from the Arabic wor “alloeh”, meaning a “shinning bitter substance” and aloe
vera

up to 99% water and around 75 potentially active ingredients- including vitamins,
antioxidants, minerals and amino acids, according to a study published in the
International Journal of Research and Medical Sciences. This, as well as the aloe vera
extract from the plant’s rind, are used in a variety of skin care products – from
moisturizers and face mists to toners and micellar water formulas (Beauty Hub. Ph
Team, 2021).

Neza c. (2022) state that Aloe vera is a plant that grows in tropical climate like

According to the national integrated research Program on Medical Plants,

Philippines(2015) In 1974, the university of the Philippines Manila (UPM), Several of the
universities and governmental research agencies working under the Department of
science and Technology (DOST) of the Republic of the Philippines collaborated on the
formation of the National Integrated Research Program on Medical Plant (NIRPROMP),
with a mandate to distribute inexpensive medicine to the poor ,to propagate the use of
herbal preparations with proven medicinal efficacy and identify scientifically validated
medicine that would improve the Filipino pharmaceutical industry. NIRPROMP was
established to address the rising cost of imported pharmaceutical products, especially
those used for frequent ailments such as common cold, fever and headaches. At the
time the Philippine pharmaceutical products, especially those used for frequent ailments
such as common cold, fever and headaches. At the time, the Philippines
pharmaceutical industry was not self- sustaining in these medicines and companies
were spending approximately 150 million Philippines pesos annually to import medicine.
These imported medicines were also prohibitively expensive and out of the reach of
many patients. With this in mind, NIRPROMP prioritized reducing the country’s
dependence on imports and offering people more affordable pharmaceutical products
through locally developed herbal medicine.

One such innovation came in 1995, when NIRPROMP isolated vitex negundo a
large, hardy five-leaved aromatic shrub with bluish- purple flowers, as a natural source
for developing an effective herbal medicine. Known in the Philippines as lagundi the
plant thrives in both humid and aid regions throughout Africa and Asia and has been
used by local populations for hundreds of years to effectivity treat wounds, headaches,
ulcers, skin diseases, diarrhea and the common cold among many others. After
successfully scientifically identifying the medicinal properties of each part of the plant.
For example, while leaves are commonly used to ease headaches and cleanse
numerous diseases such as diarrhea and cholera, and its black fruit is dried the plant’s
roots are used to treat rheumatism and dysentery. This traditional medicinal knowledge
surrounding lagundi is commonly disseminated through herblores- traditional healens
who use their traditional knowledge to prepare and administer herbal medicine.
Herbolaryos have served as authority figures on medicine in many local Filipino
communities for generations and have enjoyed a great deal of respect and trust among
many communities in the country.
