Research Title

Research is a systematic investigation to find new

techniques, products, or processes to solve the
problems and provide comfort. It is what comes before
any development.

The previous module had armed you with an

understanding of the IMRAD format. The next modules
will provide you an avenue to apply this format in writing
and refining your research proposal.

Hi! I am Teacher Iris! I’m going to guide you on

your journey to this module.

At the end of the module, you should be able

REVIEW OF PREREQUISITES

How do you choose your research topic? What is your field of interest? To help you
in answering that question, you have to consider the guidelines in the selection of a
topic. Below are the guidelines in the selection of a topic:

1. Your interest and abilities

2. Availability of the materials needed for investigation;
3. Particular needs of the community;
4. Socio-economic significance of the problem;
5. Topic is within your level of knowledge and interest
6. The time element required to finish the project;
7. Safety measures to be undertaken during investigation;
8. Expenses involve in undertaking the project; and
9. Generation of new information.

1
TITLE
The title is an accurate description of a project. It
should convey appropriate information about the
scientific study presented in the report.
The best time to determine the title is after you have written the text, so that the
title will reflect the paper’s content.

Importance of a Research Title

▪ Inform/convince reader.
▪ Conveys message to your instructor.
▪ Captures reader’s attention and interest.
▪ Indicate accurately the subject and scope of the study.

Characteristics of the Title

▪ Rarely use abbreviations or acronyms unless they are commonly known.

▪ Complete enough to stand alone.
▪ Identify key variables, both dependent and independent.
▪ Two – or three- word title may be too vague, but a 14 or 15 word title is
unnecessarily long.
▪ If you cannot avoid shortening a title, consider breaking it into main title and
subtitle.
▪ Avoid phrases such as “on the”, “a study of “, “research on”, “report on”,
“regarding”,“use of” and “An Analysis” or similar constructions.
▪ Omit “the” at the beginning of the title.
▪ Use correct grammar and capitalization with all first words and last words
capitalized, including the first word of a subtitle. All nouns, pronouns, verbs,
adjectives, and adverbs that appear between the first and last words of the
title are also capitalized.

Example of a Good Research Title

a. Avoid: A Study of Developing a conductivity protocol for zinc(II) and lead
(II) nitrate biosoption of M. oleifera leaf biomass
Better: Conductivity protocol for zinc(II) sulfate and lead (II) nitrate
biosorption of M. oleifera leaf biomass

b. Avoid: A Study on the Effectivity of Extracting Heat Energy from a

Compost Pile
Better: Decomposing Energy: Extracting Heat Energy from a Compost
Pile

2
c. Avoid: Effects of Drug A on Schizophrenia patients: study of
multicellular mixed group.
Better: Psychosocial Effects of Drug A on Schizophrenia Patients: A
Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.
