I. Title of Material/Introduction:
In the previous modules, you were taught on how to design a research in
daily life. By now it is assumed that you already have a topic to focus on
because in this module, you will already write a research title. Activities are
provided in order to strengthen the mastery of the topic. You are also
encouraged to submit any outputs to your teacher depending on the agreed
manner of submission.
II. Objectives:
Upon completion of this module, the learners are able to:
• write a research title.
IV. Pre-Test
Instructions: Box the sentence that describe an effective research title.
Box all that apply.
- Use abbreviations.
V. Learning Activities:
Let us recall the steps that may help you in designing a research. Can you
still recall those?
Step 1: Brainstorm for ideas
3
Step 3: Focus on your topic
Step 5: Be flexible
Remember that all of these steps and other steps that will be introduced
are of equal importance to the completion of your study. If you skip any of these
steps, you might end up having a lousy paper.
The title of your paper may not be exactly the same as your research
question or your thesis statement. The title should clearly convey the focus,
purpose and meaning of your research.
According to rhetoric scholars Hairston and Keene, making a good title for
a paper involves ensuring that the title of the research accomplishes four goals.
First, a good title predicts the content of the research paper. Second, a good title
should be interesting to the reader. Third, it should reflect the tone of the writing.
Fourth and finally, it should contain important keywords that will make it easier to
be located during a keyword search.

Narrative tone of
the paper
Purpose of the
(typically defined
research
by the type of
research)
Methods used
The initial aim of a title is to capture the reader’s attention and to draw his
or her attention to the research problem being investigated.
Typically, the final title you submit to your teacher is created after the
research is completed so that the title accurately captures what was done.
However, the working title should be developed early in the research process.
This can help you anchor the focus of the study in much the same way the
research problem does. Referring back to the working title can help you reorient
yourself back to the main purpose of the study if you feel yourself drifting off on a
tangent while writing.
