so that you can manage yourself effectively regardless of what life
might bring your way. True fulfillment can never come from chasing
other people’s dreams. If you want to achieve lasting happiness, you
need to design your life based on who you are. You must be fully

Discussion

The Focus of Personal Development

According to Steve Covey as cited by Hansen (n.d), developing a
personal mission statement allows us to connect to our distinct life’s
purpose and have that profound satisfaction of the attainment of such
purpose. Lemme (1995) added that the desire to understand the
various forces that create developmental diversity among individuals is
stronger than ever.
Writing a personal mission statement enables us to examine what we
find essential and valuable. It can guide us to come up with a sound
decision most especially on a particular job, company, or field of
specialization. It also empowers us to track possible options and
opportunities when we are at a career crossroad of our life’s journey.
Steps for Developing a Personal Mission Statement
Step 1 Identify past successes
Spend some time identifying four or five examples where you had
personal success in recent years.
For example: Developed a new product, win in a Mathematics quiz
bee, part of a fund raiser team
Step 2 Identify core values
Develop a list of attributed that you believe would identify who
you are and what your priorities are. The list can be as long as you
need. Once your list is complete, see if you can narrow your values
down to around five or six of the most important values. Finally, see if
you can choose the one value that is most important on you.
Step 3 Identify contributions
Make a list the ways by which you make a difference. How could
you contribute best to the world in general, to your family, your
employer or future employers, your friends, and your community.
