of the Study
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Practical Research 2 Grade 12 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)

Module on Scope and Delimitation of the Study!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

master the scope and delimitation of the study. The scope of this module permits it
to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the
standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be
changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

Lesson
Scope and Delimitation
1 of the Study

Scope and delimitation are comparable to strengths and weaknesses. As a

person, knowing your strengths and weaknesses will help you improve and develop
personally and professionally. In research, identifying the coverage and constraints
of the study will assist the researcher what to focus on.

What’s In

What is scope of the study? What is delimitation of the study? What are the
items included in the scope and delimitation? All these questions will lead you to
write a detailed scope and delimitation for your research.

Notes to the Teacher

It is best that learners have formulated accurately and written
properly the statement of the problem of their research.

9
Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of the study describes the coverage of the study. It identifies the
boundaries of the study in terms of subjects, objectives, facilities, area, time frame,
and the issues to which the research is focused.
Sample phrases that help express the scope of the study:
 The coverage of this study …
 The study consists of …
 The study covers the …
 The study is focus on …

The delimitation of the study pertains to the boundaries of the research with
respect to the major variables. Delimitation is used to make the study better and
more feasible and not just for the interest of the researchers. It identifies the
constraints or weaknesses of the study which are not within the control of the
researchers.
Sample phrases that expressed the delimitation of the study:
 The study does not cover the …
 The researchers limited this study to …
 The study is limited to …

In writing the scope and delimitation, it is essential that the researcher has
already defined the major variables of the study which are contained in the title
and in the general statement of the problem. The scope and delimitation of the
study should include the following items:
1. topic of the study;
2. objectives of the study;
3. issues it will address;
4. time frame;
5. locale of the study; and
6. characteristics of the participants.

Reminder: In writing the scope and delimitation of the study, make sure that there
are reasons for the inclusion and exclusion of some variables. It is suggested to
state the scope of the study in one paragraph and discuss the delimitation in
another paragraph.

What’s More

Examples of Scope and Delimitation of the Study

10
To assist you in writing the scope and delimitation of the study, three
examples are presented.

Example 1.
The study covered to determine the effectiveness of Rambutan fruit
(Nephelium lappaseum) seeds and peels phenolic extract in lowering the blood
glucose levels of diabetic-induced albino mice (Rattus albus). Specifically, it focused
on the significant difference and the significant effect of the different treatments in
terms of glucose reduction. The study was conducted at Regina Ville 2000
Barangay Inocencio, Trece Martires City from July 2019 to October 2019 within the
first semester of school year 2019 – 2020.
The study was limited on the production of tea out of rambutan fruit seeds
and peels phenolic extract to lessen the glucose levels of diabetic-induced albino
mice. The effectiveness of the produced tea was tested in 21 diabetic-induced
albino mice whereas the base, induced and final glucose levels was gathered. The
weight of the mice that were used in this study ranges from 10 g to 15 g, and the
sex of the mice were not specified. In addition, Melina (2010) stated that inbred
mice were used since their genetic, biological, and behavior characteristics closely
resemble those of humans. Furthermore, the mice were given seven different tea
treatments consist of 25%, 50% and 75% concentration of the phenolic extract for
each rambutan seeds and peels that undergone with extraction method. Water
bathing was the extraction process used in order to obtain the rambutan fruits
seeds and peels phenolic extract since it is the suggested easiest and safest way of
extraction of phenolic extract (Nagalingam, 2017). The extracts were utilized to
determine the anti-diabetic properties of the fruit. Lastly, there was a controlled
treatment that enabled the researchers to determine the best treatment in terms of
glucose reduction.
Even though the phenolic extracts of Rambutan plant parts was used to
determine its anti-diabetic properties, the researchers did not perform a chemical
analysis since it was very costly for the researchers.

Example 2.
This research was bounded on the out-of-field teaching cases in public high
schools of Trece Martires City. The focus of this study revolved on the profile of out-
of-field public high school teachers in terms of age, gender, subjects taught and
years in service.
This study was delimited on the out-of-field teachers of public junior high
schools, therefore, private school, elementary level, and senior high school teachers
were not included.
The study focused on the out-of-field teaching cases in public high schools of
Trece Martires City. The researchers selected the public schools as their variable

11
because public schools were likely to practice out-of-field teaching. Moreover, the
researchers chose junior high school teachers because they have specialized
subjects.
The research was conducted in Trece Martires City from November 2019 to
February 2020.

Example 3.
This study focused on the effects of Tax Reform for Acceleration and
Inclusion (TRAIN) law. The researchers used the before and after study design that
discusses the effects of TRAIN law and class income in the locals of Trece Martires
City.
The study only analyzed measurable and numerical value that gathered
during the data gathering procedure in the locals. This study adapted the Family
Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) 2015 providing the data of the family
income and expenditure which specifically, discusses living, levels of consumption
of the item expenditure, and savings of families.
The research included only the local households of Trece Martires City that
were classified to seven income class. The respondents of each class were located in
different areas of Trece Martires City such as poor and low income in Aguado
Housing Resettlement, Southville of Inocencio, La Paz Homes and Palawit of
Cabezas, Lallana and Sunshine Ville of Cabuco. While the lower middle, middle,
and upper middle are located in Capitol Hills Executive Subdivision of Lapidario,
Calle Maligaya and Luciano, Sampaguita Village, and Regina Ville of Inocencio.
Lastly, the upper income and rich in Barangay San Agustin and De Ocampo and
randomly selected from Osorio, Conchu, Perez and other barangays of the city.
The areas were selected through the assumption of researchers based on the
demographic reference of class income discussed on Community Based Monitoring
Survey of Trece Martires City.
