SCOPE

AND
DELIMITATION
SCOPE
• a section in the research paper that explains
what information or subject is being analysed.

Example:
The scope of a Historical Research paper
includes a scope section that explains what time
period the writer is analysing.
SCOPE
• it tells which aspect of a subject the writer has
chosen to analyse.

Note:
Most research is limited in scope by sample size,
time and geographic area.
DELIMITATION
• Explanation of the scope of the study
• Allows the writer to explain why certain
aspects of a subject is chosen and why others
were excluded.
• It is the part where the writer also explains
the chosen research method and why certain
theories were applied to the data.
Guidelines in Writing Scope and
Delimitation
• Indicate the principal variables, locale,
timeframe and justification.
• Mention the group of respondents/participants
to whom your research is directed.
• Tell the subject matter of your subject.
• Identify the location or place where your study
will take place.
• Indicate the timeframe. State the time coverage
of the study
Guidelines in Writing Scope and
Delimitation
• Don’t forget the limitation. What is the
limitation of your study?
• Write the topics or information that which are
not included in your research.
• Mention if your study is beneficial to all or to a
certain person or institution only.
EXAMPLE OF
SCOPE AND
DELIMITATION OF
THE STUDY
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
This study would like to found out the effects of
obesity to the socialization skills of Junior High
School students. It uses a quantitative descriptive
design. Its participants are only limited to 20 obese
junior high school students enrolled in Arellano
University.
The research is only limited to the analysis of the
effects of obesity to the students’ socialization skills.
The researcher doesn’t include the explanation of
measures that can help reduce their weights.
THINGS TO REMEMBER!!!
1. The scope of the study tells the reader which
aspects of a subject the writer has chosen to
analyse.
2. Most research is limited in scope by sample
size, time and geographic area. The scope of
the study is usually followed by an
explanation of the limitations of the research.
THINGS TO REMEMBER!!!
3. This section allows the writer to explain why
certain aspects of a subject were chosen and why
others were excluded.
4. Don’t forget the limitation by writing the topics
or information which is not included in your
research.
5. Some scope and delimitation of others consist of
lots of paragraphs. But actually, as long as the
important matters have been discussed, one or
two paragraphs will do.
TASK!!!
With your group mates, prepare the
Scope and Delimitation for your chosen
research topic and
Present it to the class.
