• The learners will do the walkthrough of the lesson

expectations.
•In this part, the content and illustration of the lesson
will be presented.

What’s new?

Relate this to personality consolidation:

“A small body of determined spirits fired by an
unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the
course of history”
- Mahatma Gandhi

“The Church says: The body is a sin. Science says:

The body is a machine. Advertising says: The body is
a business. The body says; I am a fiesta.”
- Eduardo Galeano
B. Development What I Know?
a. THUMBS-LESS LIFE

With your partner (choose from your family), one of

you will pretend that your thumbs are gone for five
minutes. While in this state, proceed with your normal

activities while your thumbs are not functioning
(immobile). On a piece of paper, in one column ask
your partner to write down as many activities you can
NOT do because your thumb is absent. In another
column write down the many things you CAN do
even if your thumb is absent.

b. Bring pictures of ancient tribes such as

those of those of Pre – Colonial
Philippines whose manner of clothing
have not yet been influenced by the
western colonizers. ( Ex: tattooed Kalinga
women, indigenous Aetas (male and
female)

What’s In?
A. Answer the following:

1. How did you feel about self after

failing to do certain activities that you
would normally do easily? Did you
appreciate the importance of a very a
small part of your body, your thumb,
more after this activity?
2. When you wrote down the column of
things that you can still do even in the
absence of your thumb, did that
change the way you feel about
yourself? Did it comfort you a little to
know that you still do certain things
without your thumb?
3. Look at the list of the things that you
can do without your thumb. Imagine
that these are the only things that you
can do for the rest of your life.
Would you still consider your
activities as “human” activities? Do
you agree if someone says that
without your thumbs, your life is not
as human as it should be?

B. Discuss the following questions:

1. Note down the significant differences
between the ways tribal Filipinos
before the Spanish colonization
dressed from the way we do now.
2. If some Filipinos would dress this

way in our cities today, what do you
think will be the general reaction of
other city dwellers? Why?
3. Do you think the attitude of Filipinos
and of other people in general,
towards the body has changed
throughout history? What has
changed?

What Is It?

TRIVIA

Did you know that humans are the only animals on

earth with fully opposable thumbs? Opposable refers
to the ability of the thumb to “lies across the palm,
perpendicular to the four fingers”

The Body as a source of Limitation and Possibility

Human existence is embodied existence. We are

not angels. We have bodies. Many things that are
related to our existence as persons are related to our
bodies that limits us in many ways. So we have to
take care of our bodies.

Our limitations are due to our being embodied

beings. This does not mean, however, that our bodies
are merely hindrances to our desires and aspirations.
Just as much as our bodies limit us, our bodies also
enable us to create meaning in the world. Hence, the
body is both a source of limitations and possibility.

 After a brief overview of the history of

thought on embodiment, we have discovered
that the relationship between the body and
spirit have been understood in various ways
through time. We have also learned that a
large part of western history has given
primacy to the importance of the mind/spirit
over the body.

C. Engagement What’s More?

A. Explain how statements below
illustrate the paradox discussed above?
Give similar examples.

The body limit us. Unlike the birds that can

fly we have no wings to make us fly. But with
our creative minds, we invented jets and
planes to make us fly even farther than any
bird.

B. Research on the differences between

western medicine and oriental medicine.
Relate the differences in diagnosis and
treatment to the different philosophies
of embodiment.

What I Can do?

A. Reflect on one thing you cannot do because of
your body and on one possible thing you can
do because of that bodily limitation. How do
you feel about this fast?

What other enrichment activities can I engage in?

(additional activities)

Make a gallery of pictures exemplifying the perfect

harmony of mind and the body through the celebrated
accomplishment of sports icons.
D. Assimilation What I have learned?
CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING

1. How does the human body impose limit and

possibilities for transcendence? Explain.

possibilities and transcendences.

3. Briefly discuss the different perspectives on

the relationship of the body and mind in
different periods in history by capturing the
main points in the form of one slogan per
historical period.

Merleau – Ponty’s perpectives on the
relationship between the body and mind
