Coronavirus

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a wide family of viruses that can cause various conditions,
from the common cold to more serious diseases, such as the coronavirus causing the
Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV) and the one that causes respiratory
syndrome severe acute (SARS-CoV). A new coronavirus is a new strain of coronavirus
that had not been found before in humans.

Coronaviruses can spread from animals to people (zoonotic transmission). According

to exhaustive studies in this regard, we know that the SARS-CoV was transmitted from
the civet to the human being and that there has been transmission of the MERS-CoV
from the dromedary to the human being. In addition, it is known that there are other
coronaviruses circulating among animals, which have not yet infected humans.

symptom
These infections usually present with fever and respiratory symptoms (cough and
shortness of breath or difficulty breathing). In the most severe cases, they can cause
pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Diagnosis

To determine if the discomfort suffered by a patient comes from a simple cold or from a

coronavirus, the doctor can perform a nose and throat culture, or even a blood test.

In cases of suspected coronavirus, a chest tomography is usually performed to

determine the symptoms of pneumonia, as well as other blood coagulation tests, a

biochemical analysis and a blood count. Antibody tests and SARS virus isolation are

also performed.

Likewise, in order to contain the transmission, an evaluation is made to those people

who present the symptoms and who may be prone to contracting the virus.

Treatments

There is no vaccine against the human coronavirus that causes a cold, but milder

cases can be overcome by following the same steps as a common cold. This does not

require medical intervention and simply wash your hands frequently, rest and drink

plenty of fluids, the symptoms will disappear within a few days. Painkillers such as

ibuprofen or paracetamol can also be taken to relieve sore throats or fever.

In cases of coronavirus SRAS, MERS CoV and COVID-19, hospital admission is

usually convenient. Antivirals, high doses of steroids are given to reduce pulmonary

inflammation and respiratory support with oxygen; Sometimes you may need

antibiotics, but only if there are supervening bacterial infections, that is, superinfection.

Basic protection measures against the new coronavirus

1) Wash your hands frequently.

Wash your hands frequently with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water.

2) Adopt respiratory hygiene measures.

When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with your elbow bent or with a

handkerchief; throw away the handkerchief immediately and wash your hands with an

alcohol-based hand sanitizer, or with soap and water.

3) Maintain social distancing.

Keep at least 1 meter (3 feet) away between you and others, particularly those who

cough, sneeze and have a fever.

4) Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Why? Hands touch many surfaces that may be contaminated with the virus. If you

touch your eyes, nose or mouth with contaminated hands, you can transfer the virus

from the surface to itself.
