Global warming has already had observable effects on the environment, such as
shrinking glaciers, earlier break up of ice on rivers and lakes, increased droughts,
intensifying extreme weather and plant and animal ranges shifting. Without
effective action to halt the burning of fossil fuels and reduce the levels of
greenhouse gases released by human activity, humans and wildlife worldwide
face an unwelcoming future.
Industrial Revolution : The Industrial Revolution was a period of major
industrialization and innovation that took place during the late 1700s and early
1800s. The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain and quickly spread
throughout the world. Although the Industrial Revolution occurred approximately
200 years ago, it is a period that left a profound impact on how people lived and
the way businesses operated. Arguably, the factory systems developed during the
Industrial Revolution are responsible for the creation of capitalism and the
modern cities of today.
In the early days of the Industrial Revolution, no one would have thought that
their burning of fossil fuels would have an almost immediate effect on the
climate. That is much earlier than previously thought, so our discovery redefines
our understanding of when human activity began to influence our climate.
Determining when global warming began, and how quickly the planet has
warmed since then, is essential for understanding how much we have altered the
climate in different parts of the world. Our study helps to answer the question of
whether our climate is already operating outside thresholds that are considered
safe for human society and functional ecosystems.
