ABSTRACT

The phenomena of nepotism are commonly observed in modern business nowadays and became
a frustrating issue since it can reduce the job opportunities for most eligible candidates and some
of the workers being mistreated in their workplace. This small scale study has been conducted
mainly to determine the effect of practicing nepotism at a workplace. It investigates the reasons
and effects of nepotism when the management of a company applied it during recruiting their
employees. Hence, 75 sets of questionnaires has been kindly distributed to the respondents
consisting of students in UiTM Shah Alam from ages 18 and above. Results show that more than
half of the respondents agreed that nepotism should not be continued at the workplace since they
believed a lot of eligible graduates would be unemployed in the future and employee might have
a depression and mental health problem when working in this environment. Apart from that, only
a few of respondents agreed nepotism to be continued as they thought it was a safe way for the
employer to pass down their company to someone they are more trusted compared to other
candidates. These indicate that nepotism does have more negative effect instead of the positive
effect on our society. Thus, the employees who have been feeling unfairly treated by the
manager or supervisor should speak out bravely their thoughts and if it unable to be controlled,
they should take a legal action by documenting the physical evidence of mistreatment to the
Ministry of Human Resources.
