Praise the author turning to Allah SWT. which has conferred grace, guidance,

physical and spiritual strength, so that I can finish this paper with the title “Present

continuous tense”. Writing this paper can be resolved thanks to the help and

encouragement of some of the writing of this paper although still far from perfect.

Therefore, the authors convey countless thanks with sincerity, to:

INTRODUCTION

1. Issue background

English is an international language by mastering English well, we will be able

to communicate with other nations in the world. Each language must have rules or

we often call it with its respective grammar terms. Likewise with English, there are

many rules that must be considered in using it, especially in the field of writing.

The present continuous tense or what is often called the present progressive is

certainly familiar to our ears, the point of the present continuous tense is a tense

that describes an event that is happening at the present time.

DISCUSSION

A. Pengertian present continuous tense

Present Continuous Tense atau sering disebut juga Present Progressive Tense

adalah cara untuk menyampaikan setiap tindakan atau kondisi yang terjadi

sekarang, sering atau mungkin sedang berlangsung. Dalam aturan tenses yang satu

ini, kata penghubung, time signal, dan subjeknya memiliki karakteristik tersendiri.

Artinya, rumus yang digunakan berbeda dengan tenses yang lainnya. Istilah present

continuous tense biasa digunakan pada British English, sedangkan pada American

English lebih umum menggunakan istilah Present Progressive Tense. Present

Continuous Tense digunakan untuk menyatakan kegiatan atau perbuatan yang

sedang terjadi sekarang atau sedang berlangsung pada saat berbicara.

B. Karakteristik present continuous tense

Present continuous tense memiliki ciri atau karakteristik tersendiri, yaitu:

1. Menggunakan kata kerja bentuk -ing atau V-ing. Contoh: playing, watching,

doing, singing, cooking, dancing, dan lain-lain.

2. Apabila diubah menjadi kalimat tanya, maka to be akan berpindah ke depan.

Diketahui bahwa to be terdiri dari am, is, dan are. Jika menggunakan kalimat

tanya negatif, maka hanya ditambahkan not setelah to be. Contoh: Are not we

drinking coffee?

 Beberapa ciri-ciri tersebut merupakan karakteristik dari tenses ini. Sehingga

apabila muncul verb -ing atau kata kerja bentuk -ing, maka bisa dikatakan bahwa

kalimat tersebut menggunakan Present Continuous. Sebagai catatan, ada beberapa

ciri lainnya yang biasa digunakan pada tenses ini. Salah satunya adalah keterangan

waktu atau time signal. Keterangan waktu juga bisa digunakan untuk membedakan

tenses satu dengan yang lainnya. Berikut beberapa keterangan waktu yang sering

digunakan pada tenses ini:

Right Now Saat ini
Today Hari ini
This Morning Pagi ini
This Afternoon Sore ini
Soon Segera
Tonight Malam ini
At Present Sekarang ini

C. Jenis & rumus present continuous tense

Formula yang bisa digunakan untuk membuat kalimat dalam bentuk present

continuous tense, yaitu:

1. Kalimat positif
Subject + to be (am, is, are) + Verb – ing + object
Contoh: Awan is cooking fried rice for himself today.

2. Kalimat negatif
subject + to be + not + verb – ing + object
Contoh: Awan isn’t cooking fried rice for himself today.

3. Kalimat tanya
to be + subject + verb – ing + object
Contoh: Is Awan cooking fried rice for himself today?.

 Pola/bentuk masing-masing hal yang dibutuhkan atau digunakan di dalam

formula sekaligus beberapa bentuk dari Present Continuous Tense, antara lain:

a. Bentuk “to be”

Tunggal Jamak
I am (orang pertama)
We are (orang pertama)

You are (orang kedua) You are (orang kedua)

He / she / it is (orang ketiga) They are (orang ketiga)

b. Bentuk kata kerja “-ing” (V + ing)

Contoh:
- Go + ing = going
- Read + ing = reading
- Cook + ing = cooking

c. Keterangan waktu (adverb of time) yang sering digunakan dalam Present Continuous
Tense untuk menunjukkan suatu rencana: just, still, now, right now, at the moment,
dan tomorrow.
Contoh:
- Abigail just left for London
- Diandra still waiting for her scholarship announcement
- Tomorrow, I’ll arrive in Jakarta at 8 AM
- I’m eating my fried rice now.
- She is not here to accompany us at the moment.

d. Tense ini juga dapat digunakan untuk menjelaskan sebuah kegiatan yang menjadi
rutinitas sementara dengan menggunakan keterangan waktu seperti this week, these
days, this month, etc.
- I’m quite busy this week.
- These days people interact more often on the internet rather than in Reality.

Catatan:

1) Digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu peritiwa yang sedang berlangsung sekarang

ketika peristiwa lain terjadi. Present continuous tense ini hanya menekankan
“sedang”. Misalnya:
- They are reading books when i enter the room.

 - She is cooking when her husband gets home.

2) Keberadaan “objek” tidak harus ada, kalimat yang ingin di buat tanpa menggunakan
objek. Misalnya:
- She is being angry.

3) Pertanyaan Wh-. Untuk membentuk pertanyaan wh, tambahkan kata wh (what, where,
when, dll), ubah posisi subjek dan to be, dan tambahkan tanda tanya. Contoh:
- Wati is staring at the crowd from her windows.
- When is Wati staring at the crowd from her windows?
- Where is Wati staring?
- Who is staring at the crowd from the windows?

4) Kata-kata kerja yang menyatakan perasaan atau berhubungan dengan pancaindera,

seperti know, like, mean, believe, feel, forget, hate, need, own, prefer, remember,
seem, dan want tidak perlu ditambahkan –ing. Misalnya:
- I want to see the opera.
- Awan hates the taste of coffee from this coffee shop.
- I like coffee from toraja.

D. Penerapan present continuous tense

Fungsi present continuous tense dalam tata bahasa inggris adalah untuk

menggambarkan peristiwa ketika sedang terjadi, atau mungkin terjadi. Dalam

sebuah kalimat penggunaan Present Continuous Tense dapat berfungsi dan

digunakan untuk, antara lain:

1. Menyatakan suatu peristiwa atau perbuatan yang sedang berlansung pada saat
berbicara. Misalnya:
- She is watching the television now.

2. Menyatakan suatu peristiwa atau perbuatan yang bersifat sementara. Misalnya:

- Awan is playing game now but He will reply her massage soon.

3. Menyatakan suatu peristiwa atau perbuatan yang akan segera dilakukan di masa
yang akan datang (future time) dan kata keterangan (tonight, tomorrow) harus
disebutkan. Misalnya:
- Ayu is leaving for Ujung Pandang tonight.
4. Menyatakan suatu peristiwa, pekerjaan atau perbuatan yang sedang
berlangsung dalam suatu periode tertentu di masa sekarang meskipun tidak
dilakukan pada saat berbicara. Misalnya:
- I am studying English Economic at the IAIN Palopo now.

5. Menyatakan suatu peristiwa, perbuatan atau kejadian yang dipakai sebagai

immediate (segera) future untuk memberi perhatian. Misalnya:
- Awan and husni are going to presentation.
- He is going to drive a car.
6. Menyatakan situasi-situasi yang berubah. Misalnya:
- The price of oil is increasing very fast. (Harga minyak melambung dengan
cepat.)
- My father’s health is getting better. (Kesehatan ayah lebih baik.).

CATATAN:

Perhatikan contoh ilustrasi berikut. Misalnya, Mumut dan Awan pergi ke Social

Barn untuk merayakan ulang tahun Mumut. Jika ingin menceritakan hal ini setelah

Mumut dan Awan selesai (dalam artian menceritakan cerita Mumut dan Awan di

Social Barn setelah mereka pulang dari Social Barn) maka harus menggunakan past

tense. Misalnya:

- Mumut dan Awan queued for a long time before they get to order from their

menu.

Namun, jika ingin menceritakan cerita Mumut dan Awan saat sedang berada di

Social Barn dan apa yang mereka lakukan di sana, maka harus menggunakan

present continuous tense. Misalnya:

- Mumut dan Awan is being at Social Barn.

- They are sitting in the corner on the fourth floor, so they get to see the whole

view of Palopo city. (menunjukkan aktivitas yang sedang dilakukan oleh

Mumut dan Awan saat di Social Barn)

- “Are you getting new experience after we meet and make relationship, hehehe?”

said Awan to Mumut while taking a sip from her thai tea. (Contoh present

continuous yang digunakan sebagai bentuk kata tanya).

FINISH

A. Conclusion

Present continuous tense adalah bentuk kalimat yang digunakan

untuk untuk tindakan-tindakan yang terjadi sekarang atau sedang

terjadi.

Untuk kalimat positif bentuk rumus Present continuous tense adalah S

+ to be + Verb-ing dengan ciri-ciri khusus predikat kalimat V1-ing dan

kalimat tanya dengan memindahkan to be dan keterangan waktu yang

sering digunakan adalah now, at present atau right now.

B. Suggestion

Kami menyadari bahwa makalah yang kami buat ini masih jauh dari

kesempurnaan dan masih banyak hal yang perlu diperbaiki untuk itu kritik dan

saran kami harapkan dari pembaca sebagai bahan evaluasi dan pembelajaran bagi

kami agar dalam pembuatan makalah kami selanjutnya lebih baik.
