THE PROJECT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF

NAIROBI WESTERN RING ROADS

(GRANT AID PROJECT FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF JAPAN)

1. BACKGROUND
The road infrastructure in Nairobi is functioning to facilitate urban transport and
playing a key role for regional transport along the Northern Corridor. Rapid increase of
population and vehicles is causing serious traffic congestion as well as increase of
road maintenance cost, traffic accidents and environmental burden. People are obliged
to pay high fares of public transport under the threat of unsafe transport.
No immediate and appropriate remedial measures will worsen the current situation
and jeopardize economic development in the future as it is forecasted that population
in Nairobi increase from the present 3 million to 4.3 million in 2025.
The Government of Japan through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)
assisted formulation of “Master Plan for Urban Transport in the Nairobi Metropolitan
Area”. This Master Plan identified some projects to be developed urgently and
examined their feasibility.
The captioned project is derived from the Master Plan as a priority. Connecting of 3
missing link roads is going to network the area which is currently separated by rivers
and to alleviate the congestion and contribute to smooth and safe transport of people
and goods between Westlands and Kilimani areas.
