Hello everyone, welcome back to english class with me Ms. Icha.

Today we are
going to talk about SHOULD AND COULD

Meaning.

Should and Could are modal verbs. We use should and shouldn't to make

recommendations or give advice or to talk about what we think is right or
wrong.   It can also be used to express obligation as well as expectation. When
we use should in a sentence, it gives the meaning of “It’s a good idea”.

 You should means something like I think it is a good idea for you to do

it.

 You shouldn't means something like I think it is a bad idea for you to

do it.

 Should is used to express the opinion of a speaker and often follows I

think or I don't think.

How to Use it?

Using the modal verb should is easy and fun.  You can use any subject, place
“should” after the subject but before the infinitive. We can change the subjects in
the sentences and you will see that when we use should, the verb remains in the
infinitives. .  That’s right!  You don’t have to worry about any special endings on the
verbs when you use them with should! Here is the formula:

subject + should + infinitive

Here I have four examples. the underlined verbs are in their infinitives.
Look at these examples!

You should drink water every day.  (recommendation)

He should study for the test tomorrow.  (advice)
I should buy a  gift for the teacher.  (obligation)
They should be here by now.  (expectation)

Now let’s see the negative form.

Should not or Shouldn’t just puts the sentence in the negative form.  So you are
NOT recommending something, NOT advising something, NOT expecting something
or “It’s not a good idea.”  For example:
You shouldn’t watch a lot of TV.  (recommendation/advice)
She should not buy that old car.    (recommendation/advice)
He shouldn’t arrive in Raleigh until tomorrow.  (expectation)
Now, it's time for COULD AND COULDN’T

Meaning.

Could and Couldn’t are the past tense forms of Can and Can’t. We use ‘could’ and
‘couldn’t’ to talk about our abilities in the past.

How to Use it?

Just like 'Should', You can use any subject, place “Could” after the subject but
before the infinitive. Here is the formula:

subject + could + infinitive

Look at these examples:

I could swim when I was four.

I couldn’t ride a bike when I was three.
He could walk when he was two.
