ACTIVITY 1

PROJECTED COINS

Objective:
At the end of the activity, students should be able
to understand that horizontal motion of a projectile is
independent to the vertical motion of a projectile.

Materials: Table, and 2 peso coins

Procedures:
• Place the two peso coins alongside each
other. (see the illustration)
• Hit one coin and allow it to hit the other coin.
• Observe the sound of the coins as they hit the floor.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Which coin hit the floor first?
The two-coin hit the floor at the same time.

2. Did you hear a single sound hit on the floor as the two coins hit the
floor?
Yes, a single sound is heard as the two-coin hit the floor.

3. Which coin leaves the table with a greater horizontal speed?


The first coin hit by the other coin has greater horizontal
speed.

4. Which coin travels a greater horizontal distance from the table?


The first coin hit by another coin has greater horizontal distance.

5. Which coin travels a greater vertical distance from the table?


None.no coin travel in vertical distance.

6. If both coins hit the ground first, does the horizontal motion a factor
for the determining the time that an object will hit the ground? If not, what
would be the factor?
Does not affect the result, gravity does.
