Introduction to DBS3900 LampSite and DBS5900 LampSite Base Stations

With "Continuous Innovation Based on Customer Requirements" in mind, Huawei
launched its future-oriented LampSite solution that integrates wireless platform
resources and multiple technologies. This solution is designed to expand system
capacity in indoor hotspots, eliminate coverage holes, and provide comprehensive

indoor coverage for multiple networking modes. It uses an optimized hardware

and software architecture that features simplicity, ease-of-deployment, and
significant capital expenditure (CAPEX) savings.
In the LampSite solution, the base station consists of the baseband unit (BBU),
digital conversion unit (DCU), RRU HUB (RHUB), and pico remote radio unit
(pRRU). These modules can be flexibly configured to suit network requirements.
● The BBU implements baseband control. It provides the following functions:
– Manages the entire base station system. The management involves
uplink and downlink data processing, signaling processing, resource
management, and operation and maintenance (O&M).
– Provides physical ports for information exchange with the transport
network, RF modules, environment monitoring equipment, and operation
and maintenance center (OMC).
● The DCU enables radio frequency access (RFA) and BBU access, and provides
connections to the RHUB. It provides the following functions:
– Provides ports for RF signal input and converts RF signals into digital
signals.
– Converges data and provides optical fiber connections.
● The RHUB converges CPRI data from remote RF modules and works with the
BBU, DCU, pRRU to provide indoor coverage. It provides the following
functions:
– Supports optical fiber connections to pRRUs (applicable to optical
RHUBs)
– Receives downlink data from the BBU/DCU and forwards the data to
pRRUs. Receives uplink data from pRRUs and forwards the data to the
BBU/DCU.
– Supports power over Ethernet (PoE) or direct current (DC) power supply
for pRRUs.
● The pRRU transmits CPRI data over Ethernet cables or optical fibers, and
processes RF signals. It provides the following functions:
– Modulates digital signals to a transmit frequency band, filters and
amplifies these signals, and sends them to the antenna for transmission.
– Receives RF signals from antennas, filters and amplifies these signals,
down-converts these signals, converts them to digital signals, and sends
them to the DCU for processing.
– Supports internal or external antennas.
– Supports PoE or DC power supply.
– Supports flexible configuration for multi-mode multi-band operation.

Concept
Figure 1-1 illustrates concepts involved in pRRU networking.

BBU access/RF input

In LampSite single-operator networking, BBU access and RF input are supported.
● BBU access is a radio access mode in which Huawei BBUs perform baseband
processing on the radio signals of operators.
● RF input is a mode in which the MERC performs digital-to-analog or analog-
to-digital conversion on the RF signals of donor base stations to provide
wireless coverage. The software name of RF input (based on the MERC) is RFA
(R for short). RFA is an application that complies with repeater radio
transmission and reception defined by 3GPP (TS 51.026 for GSM, TS 25.106
for UMTS, and TS 36.106 for LTE). With RFA, RF signals are transmitted over a
long distance through optical fibers and are amplified.
Physical cell/Logical cell
● Physical cell: A physical cell is a cell established on a baseband processing unit
in BBU access mode. For example, a UBBPg3 supports nine 4T4R or twelve
2T2R 100 MHz NR physical cells.
● Logical cell: A logical cell contains multiple physical cells on non-NR
networks. For example, a logical cell refers to a single frequency network
(SFN) cell in LTE, and in UMTS refers to a cell enabled with Independent
Demodulation of Signals from Multiple Small Cell RRUs in One Cell. NR
allows for physical cells only.

● SFN allows multiple physical cells served by multiple RF modules working on the same
frequency band to be combined into a single cell, namely, an SFN cell. For details, see
SFN in eRAN Feature Documentation. To obtain this document, visit support.huawei.com
and choose Product Support > Wireless Network > LTE > FDD RAN > LTE
FDD_eNodeB > eRAN > eRAN Feature Documentation > RAN Functions >
Interference Mitigation > SFN.
● Independent Demodulation of Signals from Multiple Small Cell RRUs in One Cell is a
key feature in the LampSite solution. It combines areas covered by multiple pRRUs into
one logical cell through digital combination/splitting and independent demodulation.
For details, see Independent Demodulation of Signals from Multiple Small Cell RRUs in
One Cell in RAN Feature Documentation. To obtain this document, visit
support.huawei.com and choose Product Support > Wireless Network > UMTS RAN >
RAN Solution > RAN Feature Documentation > Feature Description > Radio &
Performance > Coverage Enhancement > Independent Demodulation of Signals
from Multiple Small Cell RRUs in One Cell.

Subband
A subband is a unit by which the multi-mode radio frequency card processes one
or more carriers from signal sources in RF input mode. Adjacent carriers of the
same operator cannot be separated by carriers of other operators. For example,
four GSM carriers correspond to one subband (max bandwidth of 20 MHz); two
contiguous UMTS carriers correspond to one subband (max bandwidth of 10
MHz).
● The following figure shows a GSM subband. Up to four 200 kHz GSM carriers
are supported per subband.

Figure 1-2 GSM subband

● The following figure shows a UMTS subband. Up to two contiguous 5 MHz

UMTS carriers are supported per subband.

Cell sector equipment group

In non-NR pRRU networking, a cell sector equipment group includes the identical
carriers that are RF combined. These carriers can be from up to 16 pRRUs
connected to the RHUBs on the same CPRI link.
NR DU cell TRP
In NR pRRU networking, an NR distributed unit (DU) cell transmission reception
point (TRP) includes the identical carriers that are RF combined. These carriers can
be from up to 32 pRRUs connected to the RHUBs on the same CPRI link.
RF combination
RF combination is a digital signal processing method where the common public
radio interface (CPRI) I/Q data of two or more pRRUs is combined in the uplink
and broadcast in the downlink.

CPRI ports transmit control-plane data and user-plane data among the BBU, DCU, RHUB,
pRRU, and hRRU. User-plane data is I/Q data. For details about CPRI and I/Q, see CPRI
Specification.

BBU access and RF input are subject to the following restrictions:

● BBU access (U/L):
– Cell sector equipment group: One cell sector equipment group supports
up to 16 pRRUs. One cell sector equipment group equals one physical cell
on the baseband processing unit (such as the UBBPe6).

● LTE NB-IoT inband with shared channels does not cause separate CPRI bandwidth
consumption and shares the CPRI bandwidth with LTE FDD.
● The CPRI bandwidth is calculated based on control data overhead and coding efficiency.
When the CPRI line rate is 9.8 Gbit/s, coding efficiency of 8/10 and control data
overhead of 1/16 apply. When the CPRI line rate is 10.1 Gbit/s, coding efficiency of
64/66 and control data overhead of 1/20 apply. When the CPRI line rate is 25 Gbit/s,
coding efficiency of 64/66 and control data overhead of 1/48 apply.
● CPRI compression compresses the I/Q bit width and lowers the sampling rate to reduce
the demand on the CPRI bandwidth so that more carriers or pRRUs can be supported on
each CPRI port. For details about quadplex compression, enhanced compression, and
normal compression, see CPRI Compression in eRAN Feature Documentation. To obtain

1.4.1.1.3 RHUB-pRRU Networking Configurations

The star, load sharing, and dual-star topologies are supported between the RHUB
and the pRRU. See Figure 1-10, Figure 1-11, and Figure 1-12.

Configuration Principle Configuration Principle

Configuration principles for the RHUB-pRRU load sharing topology are as follows:
● Load sharing cannot be achieved over the optical ports on pRRUs.
● A pRRU cannot connect to two RHUBs at the same time.
● The two Ethernet cables are required to be of the same length. When this
requirement for the Ethernet cable length cannot be met, the difference in
length between the two Ethernet cables must not exceed 10 m.
● An RHUB can be connected to up to four pRRUs. Data of a cell cannot be
transmitted over two Ethernet ports for load sharing.

Figure 1-12 RHUB-pRRU dual-star topology

Configuration principles for the RHUB-pRRU dual-star topology are as follows:

● Only Wi-Fi-capable modules support the dual-star topology.
● A pRRU must use the CPRI_E0 port (for power supply and CPRI data
transmission) and the GE port (for Wi-Fi data transmission). A pRRU connects
to an RHUB over the CPRI_E0 port and to a common Ethernet device over the
GE port.

8/10 and control data overhead of 1/16 apply. When the CPRI line rate is 10.1 Gbit/s,
coding efficiency of 64/66 and control data overhead of 1/20 apply. When the CPRI line
rate is 25 Gbit/s, coding efficiency of 64/66 and control data overhead of 1/48 apply.
● For details about 3.2:1 compression, see CPRI Compression in 5G RAN Feature
Documentation. To obtain this document, visit support.huawei.com and choose Product

1.4.1.2 Macro-LampSite Co-BBU

In macro-LampSite co-BBU networking, macro RRUs and LampSite pRRUs share a
BBU subrack. Macro RRUs can be DAS macro RRUs, outdoor macro RRUs, or Book
RRUs.

1.4.1.2.1 General Restrictions

This section describes the BBU in the LampSite solution and its application
differences. For details about BBU configuration principles, typical configurations,
and version upgrades, see 3900 Series BBU Hardware Description and BBU5900
Hardware Description.

● Configuration restrictions on macro-LampSite co-BBU applicable to all RATs
are as follows:
– Macro-LampSite co-BBU applies in NR only, LTE only, and UL scenarios.
The base station type must be macro.

DBS3900 LampSite & DBS5900 LampSite 1 DBS3900 LampSite & DBS5900 LampSite
Configuration Principle Configuration Principle

– LampSite base stations do not support GSM through BBU access.

– Macro and LampSite base stations can share the BBU but not the
baseband processing unit or CPRI link.
– In macro-LampSite co-BBU networking, BBU cascading is not supported.
– Macro-LampSite co-BBU requires that a macro base station be available
before it shares its BBU with a LampSite base station, and does not
support sharing the BBU of a LampSite base station with a macro base
station. If both macro and LampSite base stations are newly-deployed,
the base station type must be macro.
– DAS macro RRUs, outdoor macro RRUs, and Book RRUs can share a BBU
subrack with LampSite pRRUs.
● Configuration restrictions specific to macro-LampSite co-BBU in NR are as
follows:
– Macro-LampSite co-BBU is supported only by DBS5900 base stations in
SA or NSA networking. Subrack interconnection in LNR (one BBU subrack
for LTE and one BBU subrack for NR) is not supported.
– Only the UMPTe and UMPTg can be shared between the LampSite and
macro base stations in 5G.
– The LampSite base station and the macro base station use independent
baseband processing units, and neither can they provide optical fiber
connections from the baseband processing units of each other.
– Baseband resource verification is not supported after macro-LampSite co-
BBU is deployed, and baseband resources must be ensured during site
design.
– Common RF resources of the macro and LampSite base stations are
allocated by the BBU in a unified manner. Manual configuration of the
common RF resources (such as RRU chains and sector equipment IDs) for
the LampSite base station must ensure no conflict with those of the
macro base station.
● Configuration restrictions specific to macro-LampSite co-BBU in UMTS and
LTE are as follows:
– UMTS and LTE main control boards that are applicable to both macro
and LampSite can be used in macro-LampSite co-BBU networking.
– In LTE FDD macro+LTE FDD/UMTS LampSite networking, the MBTS must
be used. For a separate-MPT MBTS, if the LTE FDD version needs to be
upgraded for the macro base station, the versions of both LTE FDD and
the other RAT need to be upgraded. Such a restriction also applies to the
LampSite only scenario. This is because separate upgrade in the separate-
MPT scenario is not supported when Ethernet cables are shared between
UMTS and LTE and 4:1 CPRI compression is used.

a: From SRAN16.1 onwards, macro-LampSite co-BBU is supported on NR-inclusive networks. For

details about the supported RAT combinations, see Table 1-13. To deploy macro-LampSite co-
BBU on an NR-inclusive network, the macro base station cannot work in GSM or CDMA. If the
LampSite base station works in GSM or CDMA, RFA must be used for signal input.

Board Configuration Principles

Main control board:
● LTE FDD and LTE TDD must share the main control board.
● UMTS and LTE can use the same or different main control boards. When
UMTS and LTE share the baseband processing unit, they must also share the
main control board.
● NR can share the main control board with LTE.
Baseband processing unit:
● A single BBU subrack can be configured with up to six baseband processing
units. The model and number of baseband processing units need to be
configured according to the network plan based on the supported RATs and
specifications.
● LTE FDD and LTE TDD cannot share the baseband processing unit.
● In BBU access mode, the UBBPfw1 cannot be used for BBU-BBU
interconnection.

Configuration Principle Configuration Principle

● A baseband processing unit provides 6 CPRI ports.

● The principles of configuring the UBBPfw1 are as follows:
● When the UBBPfw1 provides optical fiber connections, the main CPRI link cannot
work in load sharing topology.
● Only three CPRI ports (CPRI 0 to CPRI2) on the UBBPfw1 can be used for providing
optical fiber connections to the RHUB. The CPRI3 to CPRI5 ports cannot be used for
this purpose.
● When the UBBPfw1 provides optical fiber connections, it does not support data of
two or more RATs to be converged (for example, L+RFA, L+NB, and L+RFA+NB).

● 650 W power module (WD2M00PEIUD2) for the BBU3910:
– New deployment: A BBU3910 contains one UPEUd by default, which
supports 650 W power supply. If 1000 W power supply or power backup
(less than or equal to 650 W) is required, a second UPEUd needs to be
configured.
– Capacity expansion for inventory deployment: Circuit breakers in the
existing cabinets need to be reconfigured. In this case, the power capacity
(≥ 20 A) of circuit breakers needs to be considered.
● 1100 W power module (WD2M0UPEUE00) for the BBU5900:
– New deployment: A BBU5900 contains one UPEUe by default, which
supports 1100 W power supply. If 2000 W power supply or power backup
(less than or equal to 1100 W) is required, a second UPEUe needs to be

1.4.1.11.1 Spare Parts List

This section provides the spare parts list.

The spare parts of LampSite base stations are classified into commissioning spare
parts (such as BBU boards and RF modules) and non-commissioning spare parts
(such as cables, fans, and optical modules).

You can visit support.huawei.com to obtain the spare parts catalogs for
corresponding base stations.

1.4.1.11.2 Spare Parts Configurations

This section describes the principles of configuring the spare parts.

The Poisson algorithm (recommended) and percentage algorithm apply in

configuring the spare parts.

● Use the Poisson algorithm to calculate the number of spare parts, unless
otherwise required by the customer. The following describes the Poisson
algorithm which has been integrated into the Configurator, and thereby does
not need to be manually calculated by product managers.

Poisson algorithm: Use this formula to obtain the value of x which indicates
the number of spare parts.
P indicates the board damage probability accepted by customers, namely the
service level. Usually, the following applies: 85% ≤ P(x) < 100%.
е = 2.71828183
λ = Network capacity x Annual board failure rate x Replenishment period/365
– Replenishment period: 60 days usually
– Network capacity = Number of boards in the main equipment
Network capacity of board 02319428 = 1000
– Board annual failure rate: Provided by the spare parts center. Each board
has its own annual failure rate.
Given that the annual failure rate of board 02319428 is 0.005000, then:
λ = 1000 x 0.005000 x 60/365 = 0.8219178
According to the Poisson algorithm, the number of spare parts for board
02319428 is 4.
● If the customer has requirements on the percentage of spare parts, use the
percentage algorithm to calculate the number of spare parts.

1.4.1.11.3 Precautions
This section provides precautions on spare parts configuration.

The spare parts quantity calculated using the Poisson algorithm can meet only the
basic requirement for live networks. If a customer requires Huawei to comply with
a specified SLA, persuade the customer to purchase the spare parts management
service (SPMS) of Huawei.

1.4.2 BBU Access+MERC-based Input

In BBU access+MERC-based input mode, UMTS/LTE/NR radio signals are processed
by baseband processing units in the BBU while GSM/CDMA RF signals are fed into
the MERC in the BBU. It is recommended that medium- and small-power (less
than 10 W) signal sources not be connected to the MERC.

In single-operator scenarios, the MERC can only receive GSM/CDMA RF signals for RF input.

supported when electrical RHUBs are used.
● The first-level pRRU must be an optical pRRU.
● The two cascaded pRRUs cannot use the same RAT, and one of them must
work in NR only mode.
● The second-level pRRU is connected to the first-level pRRU over a CAT6a
shielded Ethernet cable. The maximum cable length is 20 m.

Table 1-59 describes mapping with pRRU cascading.

consumption and shares the CPRI bandwidth with LTE FDD.
● The CPRI bandwidth is calculated based on control data overhead and coding efficiency.
When the CPRI line rate is 9.8 Gbit/s, coding efficiency of 8/10 and control data

● CPRI compression compresses the I/Q bit width and lowers the sampling rate to reduce
the demand on the CPRI bandwidth so that more carriers or pRRUs can be supported on
each CPRI port. For details about quadplex compression, enhanced compression, and

Configuration Principle Configuration Principle

Figure 1-21 RHUB-pRRU star topology

Figure 1-22 RHUB-pRRU load sharing topology

Configuration principles for the RHUB-pRRU load sharing topology are as follows:
● Load sharing cannot be achieved over the optical ports on pRRUs.
● A pRRU cannot connect to two RHUBs at the same time.
● The two Ethernet cables are required to be of the same length. When this
requirement for the Ethernet cable length cannot be met, the difference in
length between the two Ethernet cables must not exceed 10 m.
● An RHUB can be connected to up to four pRRUs. Data of a cell cannot be
transmitted over two Ethernet ports for load sharing.

Figure 1-23 RHUB-pRRU dual-star topology

Configuration principles for the RHUB-pRRU dual-star topology are as follows:

● Only Wi-Fi-capable modules support the dual-star topology.
● A pRRU must use the CPRI_E0 port (for power supply and CPRI data
transmission) and the GE port (for Wi-Fi data transmission). A pRRU connects

● Configuration restrictions on macro-LampSite co-BBU applicable to all RATs
are as follows:
– Macro-LampSite co-BBU applies in NR only, LTE only, and UL scenarios.
The base station type must be macro.

For

details about the supported RAT combinations, see Table 1-69. To deploy macro-LampSite co-
BBU on an NR-inclusive network, the macro base station cannot work in GSM or CDMA. If the
LampSite base station works in GSM or CDMA, RFA must be used for signal input.

Table 1-69 Whitelists and restrictions in NR-inclusive macro-LampSite co-BBU scenarios

Operator Application Scenarioa Description

Outside the UL-NR separate-MPT Principles:

Chinese ● The RATs of the LampSite base station added to the
mainland existing UMTS/LTE/NR macro base station must be
the same as those of the macro base station.
● The macro base station does not support GSM or
CDMA.
Restrictions:
● The DCU3910 is not supported.
● The full-width board UBBPfw does not support
macro-LampSite co-subrack.

a: Macro-LampSite co-BBU is not supported in NR-inclusive scenarios that are not listed in this
table.

● In BBU access+MERC-based input mode, if the macro base station provides the GSM
signal source, GSM and LTE must use different main control boards.
● If the macro and LampSite base stations work in the same mode, they must share the
main control board.
● Separate-MPT must be used for CL.
● Macro-LampSite co-BBU principles are the same for LTE NB-IoT and LTE FDD.

Configuration Principle Configuration Principle

● UMTS and LTE can use the same or different main control boards. If MERC-
based input is used, only co-MPT is supported. When UMTS and LTE share the
baseband processing unit, they must also share the main control board.
Multi-mode extended radio frequency card:
● Only the BBU3910 and BBU5900 subracks can be configured with the MERC.
● One MERC supports only one frequency band. One BBU supports up to five
MERCs.
● The MERC does not have CPRI ports and therefore cannot be connected to RF
modules through optical fibers. Instead, optical fibers must be routed from
the baseband processing unit to transmit data forwarded by the backplane.

Configuration Principle Configuration Principle

The full-load input power per MERC port ranges from 0 dBm to 16 dBm or is converted into
the input pilot power using the following formula: Pilot power = Full-load power – Pilot
power ratio. The pilot power ratio for each RAT is calculated as follows:
● The pilot power ratio in GSM depends on the number of carriers which is calculated as
follows: 10 x lg(1/Carrier quantity) dB.
● The pilot power ratio in UMTS depends on the power configuration of channels such
as the Common Pilot Channel (CPICH), synchronization channel (SCH), and broadcast
channel (BCH). For example, if the CPICH has a 10% power ratio, the pilot power ratio
is –7.4 dB.
When multiple carriers share one port, the full-load power of each carrier must be at least
–6 dBm and the difference between the total power of the port and the full-load power of
each carrier must be equal to or less than 12 dB.

MERC Configuration Principles

● The MERC must be used with the UMPTb/UBBPd or later main control
boards/baseband processing units.
● The MERC enables RFA which cannot be deployed alone and must be
deployed with UMTS/LTE/NR in co-MPT mode.
● An MERCa of any frequency band supports 3x2T2R or 6x1T1R at most for RF
input.
● An MERCa provides six 1T1R RF ports, with up to eight subbands per port. A
single board supports up to 24 1T1R or 12 2T2R subbands.
● The total input power of the MERC ports in the BBU must not exceed 20 dBm.
If the RRU serves as the signal source (the recommended RRU output power
is at least 5 W), use a 20–30 dB attenuator or coupler based on the RRU
transmit power. Do not connect the RRU to the MERC port directly. Otherwise,
the MERC will be damaged.

In LTE MIMO scenarios, two consecutive 1T1R ports (for example, 0–1, 2–3, 4–5, 6–7)
work as a group of MIMO RF ports.

1.4.2.11 Spare Parts Configurations

This section describes the spare parts as well as principles and precautions for
their configurations.

1.4.2.11.1 Spare Parts List

This section provides the spare parts list.

The spare parts of LampSite base stations are classified into commissioning spare
parts (such as BBU boards and RF modules) and non-commissioning spare parts
(such as cables, fans, and optical modules).

You can visit support.huawei.com to obtain the spare parts catalogs for
corresponding base stations.

1.4.2.11.2 Spare Parts Configurations

This section describes the principles of configuring the spare parts.

Configuration Principle Configuration Principle

The Poisson algorithm (recommended) and percentage algorithm apply in

configuring the spare parts.
● Use the Poisson algorithm to calculate the number of spare parts, unless
otherwise required by the customer. The following describes the Poisson
algorithm which has been integrated into the Configurator, and thereby does
not need to be manually calculated by product managers.

Poisson algorithm: Use this formula to obtain the value of x which indicates
the number of spare parts.
P indicates the board damage probability accepted by customers, namely the
service level. Usually, the following applies: 85% ≤ P(x) < 100%.
е = 2.71828183
λ = Network capacity x Annual board failure rate x Replenishment period/365
– Replenishment period: 60 days usually
– Network capacity = Number of boards in the main equipment
Network capacity of board 02319428 = 1000
– Board annual failure rate: Provided by the spare parts center. Each board
has its own annual failure rate.
Given that the annual failure rate of board 02319428 is 0.005000, then:
λ = 1000 x 0.005000 x 60/365 = 0.8219178
According to the Poisson algorithm, the number of spare parts for board
02319428 is 4.
● If the customer has requirements on the percentage of spare parts, use the
percentage algorithm to calculate the number of spare parts.

1.4.2.11.3 Precautions
This section provides precautions on spare parts configuration.
The spare parts quantity calculated using the Poisson algorithm can meet only the
basic requirement for live networks. If a customer requires Huawei to comply with
a specified SLA, persuade the customer to purchase the spare parts management
service (SPMS) of Huawei.

1.5.1 Capacity Expansion

Table 1-113 Principles for capacity expansion using different methods
Scenario Method Principle

BBU access/ Carrier capacity If the post-expansion capacity does not exceed the hardware
MERC-based expansion specifications, add bandwidth licenses to expand the capacity.
input In MERC-based input mode, a macro RRU needs to be added
as the signal source. Remaining RF ports on the existing MERC
are preferentially used.

BBU access Logical cell If multiple pRRUs serve one logical cell, split the cell.
splitting

BBU access ASFN If the SFN networking is adopted to share a logical cell, use
the ASFN feature.

BBU access pRRU/RHUB Add pRRUs and RHUBs.

addition

BBU access Baseband If the post-expansion capacity does not exceed the hardware
capacity specifications, add licenses. If the post-expansion capacity
expansion exceeds the hardware specifications, add baseband processing
units.

BBU access Transmission If more than four E1/T1 ports or more than one FE electrical or
capacity one FE optical port is required, add UTRP boards.
expansion

ASFN-based capacity expansion requires sufficient isolation among physical cells.
