Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Weather Tools Book

Content Area/Grade Level(s): 4th Grade Science
Content Standard Addressed: S4E4 Obtain, evaluate info to predict weather events and look at
charts and maps of weather data.
Students can evaluate information such as maps and charts with weather data.
Students can identify weather instruments and what they measure.

Technology Standard Addressed: Technology Standard: Creativity and Innovation. Students will
apply existing and new knowledge to generate original ideas and products. Students can identify
trends and forecast possibilities

Guiding Question(s):
How does checking/predicting the weather help you decide what to wear in the morning? How
would it help people around the world?
Can weather change in one day? Explain how can it change in one day?

Selected Technology Tool: Padlet is the technology tool used to let students be interactive and
respond many ways.

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice
or Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven and student-led. Students should have “Voice and Choice” in the activities,
selecting the topic of study and determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the
standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Your student’s projects must be shared locally or globally to meet this level.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The technology tool is easy to navigate, and students will
have the guidance of the teacher when using Padlet. Students will be able to learn and complete the
activities at their own pace and review content as needed. Students will be motivated and be more
likely to engage with the content because of how fun and easy the tools are to use. Visual and audio
learners will enjoy the lesson because each student will have their own screen and access to earbuds.
Students can reply to other students’ responses because the site is set up to allow collaboration and

communication. The learning experience for the students will be better than if they were working with
a lecture, pen, and paper.
Lesson idea implementation: To teach the content the teacher will introduce students to weather
tools and explain what they are used for. The weather tools will be passed out in a face-to-face
classroom. Then students will have access to the Padlet. The teacher will walk around to see student
progress and answer questions as they come up. There are two questions that will be introduced at the
beginning of the lesson and by the end the students will be able to answer the question in the Padlet.
The final product will be making a weather tool book. This way the students will have access to what
they learned and can use it in upcoming activities. The final product will inform learning that the
students made. Each student can personalize what is in the book because it is for their personal use.
To extend students to a higher learning level they were asked to create a book and critical thinking
questions. Students will be able to analyze and evaluate their classmates work on Padlet. To conclude
the lesson, I will restate the learning objective and have a class discussion while making an anchor
chart.
Reflective Practice: The activities will positively impact students and let them review and learn
material in a way that’s fun. The further extend the learning I could let students work in small groups
and become experts on a weather measuring instrument and create a presentation to the class. The
students would use Web 2.0 tools like Bubbl.us or Genial.ly.
