Lesson Idea Name: Earth Layers model

Grade Level(s)/Content Area: 6th Grade Science
Content Standard Addressed: S6E5. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to show how
Earth’s surface is formed. a. Ask questions to compare and contrast the Earth’s crust, mantle, inner
and outer core, including temperature, density, thickness, and composition.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Educator Standard 7B students will use technology to
design and implement a variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner
need, provide timely feedback to students, and inform instructions

Overarching Question:
How are the earths layers different from one another? I can explain the density of the inner core, outer
core, mantle, and crust.
Selected Technology Tool:
☒ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such
as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice
or Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and
determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes
more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student
work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s
morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will

introduce the SRT activity:

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate
common misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of
differentiation and mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge
☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: Before the SRT activity the teacher
will introduce the topic of the earths’ layers and tell students to remember what they have learned in
third grade. Then students will work in groups of four to draw and explain the earths layers. students
can draw and write on iPad or with paper. The picture they draw and the ideas they write will be
discussed as a whole class with the whole class. The teacher will determine the misconceptions. Then
students will be free to use the student response system Socrative to self-assess the answers they
chose because the “quiz” shows the correct answers and gives automatic feedback that the teacher
created.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (7-10).
If you cannot provide one or two critical thinking questions in your assessment, please list a
question or two you would want students to provide an open response to below. Use your
Bloom’s terms to design the question(s):
“Create your own version of planet layers that are different than the four we talked about for earth. Be
creative. For example, the inner layer of this planet has a solid core but instead of the inner core being
very hot the core is extremely cold.”
“Make a chart to explain why the density of the earth’s crust must be less dense than the mantle.”
What is the densest layer of the earth? Short answer.
The crust floats on the mantle, so what can you determine about the crusts' density?
What material would be the best model of the crust? 1. cotton balls 2. tin foil 3. a lacrosse ball 4.
cardboard. Explain your answer.
The mantle is thick and hot like melted liquid plastic. True/false.
The composition of the inner core is? Multiple choice.
The hottest layer of the earth? Multiple choice.

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all the questions
and display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
I will pre-select correct answers and add an explanation on why the correct answer fits with reasoning.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? How will the data be used?
The students’ scores will be stored on the student response system and the teacher will be able to see

what the students understood and then will be able to improve on this lesson and know where to
reteach or to pick up the next part of the lesson. This will monitor the individual students progress
after learning and reviewing the topic but also help them create a project such as a presentation on
density of each layer. The teacher can review the questions in a whole group setting to talk about the
misconceptions and the students will receive a link to the textbook pages that go over the concept as
well as notes that they took during class. The students have the option to review the quiz or print it out
and write the answers for the upcoming lessons.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I have not used Socrative at all let alone in a
lesson plan. I think students will be engaged in the quiz aspect and enjoy receiving feedback after
answering questions that relate to the standard and the lesson I planned. I think students will like
using a game to learn and review materials and I think as a teacher I will enjoy using the data I collect
to improve my teaching. From this activity I hope to have a good understanding of Socrative and
other student response systems like Kahoot. It is interesting to be able to understand these tools as a
student and then come back and see what the teachers created to make it happen.
Reflective Practice:

The activities will positively affect students because they will enjoy the in-class discussion and the
quiz. To further extend the lesson I plan to have students focus in on either the density of all 4 four
layers they talked about or to become an expert on one of the layers and present it to the class. Other
technologies that could be used is Microsoft office or 365 office presentation tools to create an e-
book.
