Lesson Idea Name: Is it Equivalent?

Content Area: Math

Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.NF.3 Explain equivalence of fractions through reasoning with visual
fraction models. Compare fractions by reasoning about their size

● Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8, e.g., 1 2 =
24,46=23.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1. Empowered Learner

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers x Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

☐ Other:

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

x Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone x Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)

Type of session:

x Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

x Remembering ☐ Understanding x Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students will be using their own or the class set of tablets/laptops to take the quiz rather
than standard pen and paper.

Representation: Students will be able to enter their own kahoot nickname. (As long as it is school
appropriate)

Action and Expression: The students will be able to respond using kahoot and will be rewarded points for
answering quickly.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

● Students will be taught a lesson on equivalent fractions and how to find them. The teacher will go
through the lesson introducing the topic and going through examples with the students. After the
lesson the teacher will ask the students how they feel about the new topic on a scale of one to 5. If
needed the teacher will go over more examples, if they are ready the students will use the class set of
iPads/tablets (or laptops) for a kahoot quiz.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions x Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery
for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

● The teacher will put up the kahoot code on the smartboard for the students to connect to. Once all
the students are in, the quiz will be started. Each question will show a fraction with 2 answers. The
students will have to choose which answer is equivalent to the fraction shown. There will be 8
questions and the students will have 30 seconds to answer. Once all the students have submitted, the
teacher will move on. After the students have finished the quiz they will go over the answers together
as a class.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

x Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No

☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

x Yes ☐ No

☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?

x Yes

☐ No

Why or why not? Going over the quiz after will help to focus in on what it was specifically the students had
trouble with.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? After the quiz the teacher will go back through each
question with the class to see how they did. Questions that had a high miss percentage will be gone over as a
class.

How will the data be used? The teacher will use the data from the quiz to gauge the students' understanding
of the lesson material. Equivalent fractions is a vital concept needed to go further in understanding fractions.
The teacher must know that the class has a sure understanding of the concept before moving on.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity: The students will take the quiz on a kahoot, which is a
fun and different way to assess. By giving the students a memorable activity to complete, the goal is that they
will better remember when looking back on the concept when taking a test.

Reflective Practice: Because the student can have fun and feel less anxious when quizzing on kahoot, it makes
for a great review tool. If the quiz is more fun and engaging the better chance the student will retain the
information. Often when taking quizzes or reviewing in a textbook or a worksheet, they just want to get it
done and think about the content as much. Creating a fun and memorable experience for students to look
back on when thinking about their review is great for testing and retaining information.
