Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Sum Adding

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE1.NBT.4 Add within 100, including adding a two digit number and a one
digit number and adding two digit numbers by a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and
strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or relationship between addition and
subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Technology Standard Addressed:

1. Empowered Learner

Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in
their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. Students:

c. use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their
learning in a variety of ways

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:
☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Kahoot Supports UDL:

- Audio and Visuals
- Teachers are able to give feedback to the students
- Engages the students
- Adaptive for the students’ needs
- Uses the students background knowledge of the topic
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Before the Student Response Tool activity, the students will be learning how to add numbers within 100. They
will learn different strategies, and we will complete many different activities as to how they can add. For
example, we can use the place value manipulatives, the standard algorithm, and pictures. I will introduce the
activity by telling them we are going to practice adding.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common

misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the activity, the students will complete it individually using their Chromebook. They will work their
problems out on a piece of paper and answer on the Chromebook. The teacher will be walking around and
controlling her computer to go to the next question and give feedback. After the lesson, I will want the
students to turn in their work, so I will be able to see where the students are doing good and still struggling,
or if students are not doing their own work. The activity will take around 30 minutes depending on how fast
the students take to answer.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☒ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
Under Technology Product
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
The correct answer will be shown because then the students will be able to see if they got the problem
correct or incorrect.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the activity, I will look at the data and see if anything needs to be retaught or if we can move on. If they
have all mastered the topic, I will move on to the test over this standard and get ready for subtracting. If they
are still struggling, we will continue to practice. If there are only a few students who need extra help, I will pull
only those kids aside to have more practice.
How will the data be used?
The data will help me to determine what kids understand the material and which students need help. The
data will be shown to the students individually to allow them to see what they got right and wrong. I will use
the data to determine her next steps and give feedback to the class. I will use the data to differentiate my
lessons whether I need to challenge some students or if I need to work one on one or in a small group with
other students.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I have not tried doing a Kahoot with younger kids. I hope this will be beneficial for the students and get them
to want to get the correct answer, so they can get first place. I think this will help students learn because it is
interactive, and they are not having to just do a worksheet. They are able to use their computers and
challenge each other.
Reflective Practice:
To extend this lesson, I might have done the activity at the beginning of the lesson, and then do it again at the
end. I think this would have been beneficial because the students would personally be able to see how far
they have come. I feel that would boost their motivation to learn. I could also have the students come up with

real world problems that could be added to the Kahoot.
