1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that all works / activities for RTR and Non-Metallic Piping
installation are carried out in full compliance with specifications and applicable Aramco standards for
South Ghawar UR Early Works project requirement.
2. SCOPE
This procedure covers the methodology and execution of RTR and Non-Metallic Piping installation
activities such as Raw Water supply line; Drinking Water supply lines, Fire Water supply lines and
Sanitary Sewer/Drainage lines for South Ghawar UR Early Works & TCF project and is applicable
within the project duration.
This procedure covers the activities from trenching, pipe installation, testing (hydrotests & gravity test)
and backfilling.

4. DEFINITIONS
• Fiberglass Pipe (RTR) A nonmetallic, composite tubular product that basically contains glass
fiber reinforcement, resins, fillers and liners manufactured using semi-
automated filament winding machine.
• Reinforced Polymer Mortar Pipe (RPMP) Is a fiberglass pipe with aggregate.
• Reinforced Thermosetting Resin Pipe (RTRP) Is a fiberglass pipe without aggregate.

• Gravity Flow Fluid flowing due to gravity forces alone and not to an applied pressure
head.
5. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
5.1. Installer Requirement
5.1.1 Field installation and inspection testing shall be conducted by qualified and certified
personnel as per SAEP-407. (SAES-L-650 Para. 5.1)
5.1.2 Training certificate must be obtained from any RTR Saudi Aramco Approved Piping
Manufacturer. (SAES-L-650 Para. 5.1.1)
5.1.3 Certificate shall be valid for one year or the duration of the project, whichever is the
farthest. (SAES-L-650 Para. 5.1.2)
5.1.4 Certification shall be submitted to Saudi Aramco Inspection Department for review and
concurrence and a Job Clearance card (JCC) validity is for mentioned project only shall
then be issued to each qualified pipe and fitting installer. (SAES-L-650 Para. 5.1.3)
5.2. Pipe and Fittings Materials
5.2.1. RTR Pipe and fittings shall consist of thermosetting resin reinforced with glass fiber.

5.2.2. RTR Pipes and fittings shall be supplied with integral conductive carbon fibers when
electrical conductivity is needed. (01-SAMSS-042 Para. 5.2 c)
5.2.3. The inside surface of each pipe shall be free of bulges, dents, ridges, or other defects that
result in a variation of inside diameter of more than 3.2 mm from that obtained on
adjacent portions of the surface. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 4.2.1)
5.2.4. No glass-fiber reinforcement shall penetrate the interior surface of the pipe wall.

5.2.5. Joint sealing surfaces shall be free of dents, gouges, or other surface irregularities that
will affect the integrity of the joints. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 4.2.1)
5.2.6. Flanges, bends, reducers, tees, wyes and other fittings may be compression-molded,
manufactured from mitered section of pipe, or manufactured by the filament wound
process, using thermosetting polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy resin and fiberglass
reinforcement such that the resistance to chemical attack, the pressure rating, and the
temperature rating, are equal to or better than that of the pipe. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 4.4.2.2)
5.3. Elastomeric Seal Materials and Gaskets
5.3.1 The chemical composition of the flexible elastomeric seals shall be compatible with the
type of service and environment to which it will be subjected. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 4.4.1.5)

5.3.2 The manufacturer shall specify the seal and gasket material compatibility in line with
fluid composition and design conditions, given the range of operating parameters.

5.4. Adhesives
5.4.1 Adhesive for bonded joints shall be of a material suitable for the services and design
conditions specified. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 4.4.1.4)
5.4.2 It shall be mutually compatible with the resin used to manufacture the pipe.
5.4.3 Adhesive shall be provided in a self-contained kit with all necessary materials and
instructions. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 4.4.1.4)
5.4.4 Shelf life of adhesive kits, at 38°C, shall not be less than 9 months from the date of
shipment. Adhesive kit shall indicate the required storage conditions and date of
expiration of shelf life. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 4.4.1.4)
5.4.5 Adhesive shall be suitable for use at 48°C working environment. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 4.4.1.4)
5.4.6 Adhesive and solvent cement containers shall be tightly closed when not in use, and shall
be returned to the storage facilities to minimize exposure to excessive temperatures.

6. EXECUTION
6.1 Trench
A. Trench safety shall be in accordance with SAES-A-114. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.1 a)
B. The various parts of a soil trench (deep trench) are illustrated in Appendix A, Figure
A-1 of SAES-L-650.

C. When trenching becomes a challenge specially in rocky area, shallow trench with
bern can be used as an alternative to the deep trench method. The dimensions of
shallow trench are illustrated in Appendix A, Figure A-2 of SAES-L-650
D. Surveys shall be conducted prior to excavation to confirm that there are no other
buried commodities which could interfere or be damaged by excavation.

E. If the trench is excavated on the slides of a slope, the slope shall be less than 15
degrees. For steeper slopes and for excavation in a area of unstable soil, a
geotechnical feasibility investigation ism required prior to trenching, to verify short
term and long term stability. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.1 d)
F. Excavate trench and provide trench walls as necessary to ensure that sides are stable
under working conditions. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.1 e)
G. In situations where water is present in the trench, dewater the trench prior to
installation of bedding, pipe and backfill in accordance to SAES-A-114.

H. The bottom of the trench shall be dry or sufficient drained so that there is no standing
water before the support and bedding layers are placed and compacted. The bedding
layer must be sufficiently drained so that there is no standing water on the bedding
layer before the pipe is installed. (SAES-S-070 Para.9.3)
I. The trench shall be clean, free of organic materials, tree roots, and other extraneous
materials. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.1 g)

J. Shoring sheeting may be placed between the native soil along the side of the trench
and the trench fill if the sides of the trench are unstable. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.1 h)
K. For single pipeline, the minimum width at the bottom of the pipeline shall be at least
(1.25 x the outside diameter + 300 mm). (SAES-L-650 Para.6.1 i)
L. For multiple pipes in the same trench, the space between pipes should be at least 1
meter. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.1 j)
M. The slope of the pipe trench shall be verified not to exceed the permitted curvature of
the pipe. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.1 k)
6.2 Pipe Foundation / Bedding
1. Bedding shall be installed in all cases below the pipe and shall be a minimum of 6
inches (150 mm) including haunch zone. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.2 c)
2. If necessary to achieve the required pipe depth and pipe slope, a foundation may be
installed at the bottom of the trench. The foundation shall be designed and installed as
per SAES-Q-005. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.2 b)
3. The bedding shall be clean (rock-free and fines-free) sand, or granular with 100 %
passing 19 mm (3/4”) sieve, 90 to 100% passing a 9.5 mm (3/8”) sieve and not more
than 4% passing 75 µm (no. 200 sieve). (SAES-L-650 Para.6.2 d)
4. Bedding shall have 70% Relative Density (ASTM D4253 & ASTM D4254)
cohesionless granular soil that do not exhibit well defined moisture density
relationship. (SAES-A-114)
5. The bedding shall be shaped to provide uniform support in the haunch (saddle) zone
along the full length of the pipe without voids between the bedding and the pipe.

6. If the pipe joints are larger than the pipe, the bedding profile shall be shaped to
accommodate the joint. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.2 f)
7. The haunch (saddle) zone under the pipe shall be backfilled first. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.2 f)
6.3 Placement of Pipe in the Trench
A. Pipe 4 in. and smaller may be double joined outside the trench then lifted and placed
into the trench. Lift using wide nonmetallic straps not chains. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.3 a)
B. When lifting the pipe, do not exceed the curvature limit specified by the pipe and
lifting manufacturer. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.3 b)
C. For larger pipes (greater than ˃ 4 in.), heavy wall pipe or trenches deeper than 2 m.
pipes shall be joined in the trench. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.3 c)

D. Protect the pipeline from water or foreign material penetrates or contaminates the
interior of the pipe and the surface of the joints. (SAES-L-650 Para.6.3 d)
E. When placing the pipe, the pipe shall be at the center of the trench.
(SAES-L-650 Para.6.3 e)
D. RTR flanges when used shall be of flat face. Mating flanges of different approved
material shall be of flat face. They shall be assembled with full-face elastomeric
gaskets, 3 mm thick, and 50 to 60 Shore A Durometer hardness. (SAES-S-070 Para. 11.2)
E. Flange pressure rating requirement, and bolt tightening procedures and maximum
torque requirements shall be in accordance with SAES-L-610 or as per RTR flange
manufacturer’s recommendations. (SAES-S-070 Para. 11.4)
F. Each threaded joint shall be inspected for evidence of proper penetration of male-
female threads, within the limits specified by manufacturer. (SAES-L-650 Para. 7 c)
G. Each threaded joint shall be inspected for evidence of proper penetration of male-
female threads, within the limits specified by the manufacturer. (SAES-L-650 Para. 7 d)
H. Pipes and fittings from different manufacturers shall not be inter-mixed.

f. At the edges where a thermoplastic or an RTR pipe or fitting enters or leaves a thrust
block it shall be wrapped with neoprene wrapping that will protrude slightly from the
block. The thickness and the width of wrap shall comply with Table 5 of SAES-S-
070, unless the manufacturer requires more than one piece of wrapping.

g. Vibrators shall be kept clear of the piping while casting concrete thrust blocks.
(SAES-S-070 Para. 17.7)
6.6 Testing
6.1.6.1 Hydrostatic Testing
A. Unless prevailing conditions or regulations require full backfilling of piping
prior to the hydrotest, underground piping shall be partially backfilled with all
joints exposed during the hydrotest. The exposed joint shall be shaded from
direct sunlight, and the hydro test shall be performed so that the temperature
of the thermoplastic piping material or the temperature of the test water does
not exceed 40°C during the test period. (SAES-S-070 Para. 18.1)
B. Potable water (drinking water and raw water) piping systems shall be
hydrotested with fresh potable water as defined in SAES-S-040.

M. The hydrostatic test shall be repeated after the repair of any defect until the
system is proved satisfactory. (SAES-L-650 Para. 19.3)
N. Construction of the rest of the line may proceed following the successful
initial hydrotest. (SAES-L-650 Para. 9.2 a)
O. The piping shall satisfactory if there is no evidence of leakage or pressure loss
after the specified test period. (SAES-L-650 Para. 19.4)
P. When the complete line has been installed in the trench, it shall be prepared
for full system hydrotest. (SAES-L-650 Para. 9.2 b)
6.1.6.2 Gravity Testing
A. Gravity sewer shall be tested from manhole to manhole, or manhole to sump
inlet. The upstream manhole maybe tested at the same time.

B. Gravity sanitary sewer pipe tested separately: a column of water equivalent to
the rim elevation of the upstream manhole. (SAES-L-070 Para. 18.8 e)
C. All water and sewage (sanitary, chemical and industrial drainage and sewer as
per SAES-S-020) retaining structures under atmospheric pressure such as
tanks / holding tanks, manholes, sumps, catch basins, interceptors, lift stations,
grease-traps, etc., maybe tested separately or as part of the piping system test:
filled to top of rim with water for 8 , then topped off to top of rim. Site testing
shall take place prior to backfill and / or application of protective coating.
B. Each connecting joint, and approximately 0.60 m (2 ft.) on each side of the
connecting joint shall be left uncovered for hydrotest. (SAES-L-650 Para. 9.2 c)
C. Following successful completion of the hydrotest, the line shall be covered and
the trench filled. (SAES-L-650 Para. 9.2 f)

D. Backfill should be placed and compacted in lifts not exceeding 6 in. (150 mm),
and compacted in accordance with the Engineering Design. (SAES-L-650 Para. 9.2 g)
E. The compacting equipment shall not contact the pipe. If contact does occur, the
Construction Engineer shall be notified for inspection and repair or disposal.

F. To assure the compaction quality, vibration from moving heavy trucks shall be
avoided during backfilling. (SAES-L-650 Para. 9.2 k)
G. Color coding of utility piping above or below ground shall be in accordance with
SAES-A-104 and SAES-B-067). (SAES-L-070 Para. 4.4)
H. Detection Method is required to identify the location of underground utility line
after backfilling and shall comply with AWWA C605 section backfill.

2) All equipment and instruments used in Quality Control shall be identified, controlled and
calibrated at least every 6 months. (01-SAMSS-042 Para. 11 f)
3) Pressure gages shall be accurate within 2% of full-scale range. (01-SAMSS-042 Para. 11 g)
4) All pipes, fittings and components shall be traceable, through their markings, to the
manufacturing plant, the lot and its raw material. (01-SAMSS-042 Para. 11 h)
7.2 Inspections
The below Saudi Aramco SATIP & its applicable SAIC can be utilized:

C. All threaded connections shall be protected with protective caps. (01-SAMSS-034 Para. 6.2.2.4)
D. End protector shall be design to protect the pipe ends from impact damage, contamination, and
weathering of machined bonding surfaces due to ultraviolet exposure. They shall have an open
center permitting inspection of the pipe bore. (01-SAMSS-029 Para. 13.2.2)
E. Flange faces on fabricated piping shall have protective cover not smaller than the flange outside
diameter. (01-SAMSS-029 Para. 13.2.3)
F. The pipe shall be set on a flat surface, free of sharp edges. (01-SAMSS-042 Para. 10 d)
H. If they are to be bundled, pipes shall be secured by straps; chains are not permitted.
(01-SAMSS-042 Para. 10 g)
I. Gaskets and adhesive systems and lubricants shall be stored in their original packing in
accordance with the manufacturer recommendations. (01-SAMSS-042 Para. 10 i)
J. Gaskets, O-rings, and locking keys shall be stored flat on racks below 38°C and out of direct
sunlight. (SAES-S-070 Para. 5.5)
K. The stored adhesives systems or lubricants shall be discarded if they have an expired shelf life.
(01-SAMSS-042 Para. 10 j)
L. Adhesive for RTR piping shall be stored in an enclosure where temperature do not exceed 38°C.
(SAES-S-070 Para. 5.6)
M. Pipe shall be stored out of direct sunlight in a building or under a cover. (SAES-S-070 Para. 5 a)
N. Racks shall conform to factory shipping packages for each pipe size. Shelves shall be provided
for continuous support of the pipe. (SAES-S-070 Para. 5 b)
O. If loose pipes are stacked on each other, the stack height shall not exceed 1.5 m. Adequate side
support shall be provided to prevent slipping or rolling. (SAES-S-070 Para. 5 c)
P. If pipe is stored on racks or bearing boards, the support shall be at least 75 mm wide. Support
shall be spaced on 3 m centers maximum with the first support 1.5 m from the end of the pipe.

9. RESPONSIBILITIES
QA/QC Manager Shall ensure that the work was carried out as per the approved
procedure.
QC Supervisor Responsible in supervising and leading the QC inspector in
monitoring the work.
QC Inspector To ensure that works is carried out according to the approved
procedures and monitor compliance during execution.
Construction Managers Responsible in giving guidance to his site engineers in
implementing the work as per the approved procedure.
Site Engineers Responsible in leading the construction team in implementing the
work as per the approved procedure.
Safety Officers Monitor the activity and ensure that proper safety procedures are
being implemented and hold any activity which could be found in
unsafe situation.

G. System not adequately supported to withstand the weight of water during the test.
H. Pressure gauge(s) and relief valve(s) not calibrated and tested.
I. Pressure gauge located too far from pressurizing equipment for reading.
J. Appurtenances not adequate for the test pressure, not isolated from the test.
K. Pressure increased too rapidly to be controlled.
L. Relief valve inoperative because of a closed block valve.
M. Temporary test piping not designed for the test pressure.
N. No bleed valve provided in the test piping.
O. Failure to pressure test equipment and piping to putting them in service.
P. Testing equipment with the test gauge located at the bottom reading the test pressure,
including the head of test water.
10.3 Health, Safety and Environment issues shall be guided by AMT safety procedures & ARAMCO
Standard.
10.4 Safety talk shall be conducted to remind the workers about the risk involved before commencing
the activity.
