RTR

PRESENTATION
FLORANTE L. NOBLEZA
SAUDI ARAMCO PROJECT INSPECTION DEPT.

Introduction:

1
RTR is stand for Reinforcement Thermosetting Resin pipes. There are many types of resins and
reinforcements and each convey specific properties to the final product. Some of these resins
are Polyester, Epoxy or Vinyl ester resin. Epoxy resin is the most widely used reinforcement.

General Information for RTR pipes:

I. Types of joints:

1- Adhesive bonded joint.

2- Rubber seal joint

Figure.2 (Rubber Seal Joint)

3- Flanged joint

4- Butt and wrap joint

II. Advantages of using RTR pipes:

1- Corrosion Resistance.

2- Long Life.

3- Easy To Install.

4- Lightweight.

5- Low Pressure Loss.

6- Good Economics.

4
III. Application:

1- Potable water.
2- Saltwater / seawater.
3- Sanitary / sewage.
4- Drains.
5- Vent lines.
6- Fire mains.

IV. Some types of fitting:

Color Marking on RTR pipes:

1- Red color: indicate to “fire water”

2- Yellow color: indicate to “oily water service”

Inspection Activities:

I. Receiving Materials:

All components shall clearly be marked. The marking shall include the following:

1- Manufacturer's name.
2- Pressure/temperature rating.
3- Nominal diameter.
4- Cell classification in accordance with manufacturing industry.
5- Inspection and hydro testing mark.
6- Purchase Order number.
7- Flange designation code.
8- Small fittings and flanges that cannot be marked shall be tagged.
9- All pipes, fittings, flanges, and gaskets material shall be sourced from approved
manufacturers by Saudi Aramco.

II. Storage of material:

1- Do not lay the pipes directly on the ground, onto rails or concrete floors.
2- Ensure suitable supports are used for example wooden beams, to avoid damage to pipe
ends.
3- In order to avoid bending of the pipes, the beams should be laid directly above each
other in a vertical line.
4- If the product is stacked too high for long storage periods and subjected to high
temperatures, the supports may cause flattening.
5- Pipe stacks should have side supports or blocks to prevent rolling or slipping of the stack
during stormy weather.
6- Crystallization can take place at low temperatures then, the resin becomes hard in
appearance. The resin can be made liquid again by reheating it.
7- Before assembly each piece of thermoplastic pipe and fitting shall be visually inspected
for cuts, scratches, sun damage.

8
III. Adhesive Material:

1- Solvent cement shall be used before expiry date.

2- Hardener and Cement are mixed together to form adhesive material.
3- Solvent cement and hardener for thermoplastic piping shall be stored in an air-
conditioned building with a maximum temperature of 26.7°C.

IV- Catch Basin:

A catch basin is a part of a sewer system which is designed to capture oily water. So
that it cannot enter the drainage pipes. There are two types of the catch basin: type
A & C (see figure.14 & 15)

Figure.14 (Catch Basin Type C)

10
Figure.15 (Catch Basin Type A)

Figure.16 (Catch Basin after applying concrete)

1- Shall be installed flush to catch basin for paved drainages.

2- The flow from one catch basin shall not run into another catch basin.
3- Adhering manufacturer’s instructions to connect outlet and inlet of catch basin
with RTR drainage piping.
4- Catch basins shall not be located directly under any equipment.
5- Leakage test: filling the catch basin by water and keep water for certain time.

11
V- Manhole:

1- Material for manhole shall be a nonmetallic material.

2- Concrete manholes shall be coated internally and externally with epoxy.
3- Steel reinforcing bars in concrete shall be epoxy coated.
4- Bottom of manhole shall have concrete benching, which must be channeled
smooth from the reverse of all pipes entering the manhole.
5- The maximum distance between manholes for public sewers shall be as per
standard SAES-S-010.
6- All connections to a gravity sewer system shall be through a manhole.
7- Manhole size and material shall be in accordance with purchased order.

VI- Hydrotest:

1- Purpose: to check pressure inside RTR pipes as per standard.

VII- Internal cleaning and flushing:

To assure cleaning of RTR pipes from any contaminates internally.

VIII- Gravity test:

1- Filling vertical pipes which are connected to sanitary sewer system.

2- Keep water for certain time as per standard.
3- Checking level of water to detect any failure.

Conclusion:

RTR piping has been gaining popularity and performance characteristics recently due to
improved materials technologies for both the resin and the reinforcements, or fibers. These
improvements, along with advancing states of awareness, comfort and knowledge of the
product, have elevated the use of fiberglass pipe to the material of choice in several industries
and applications.
