Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Quick Multiplication

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE3.OA.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5
groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed
as 5 × 7.

Technology Standard Addressed: 5- Computational Thinker

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This technology tool is purposeful for students to interactively be quizzed on questions that the teacher
creates for the assessment. The Socrative is not timed but the teacher can personally time it and close the
quiz when time runs out. This tool is usually used on a touch screen this allows for students to interact hands
on. Socrative also allows the teacher the option of teacher-paced or instant feedback once the students are
done with the quiz. It can show the students the final score at the end.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to this Socrative, I as the teacher would have gone over the standard of interpreting the products of
whole numbers, e.g., interpreting 7 x 5 as the total number of objects in 7 groups of 5 objects. I would provide
manipulatives to show grouping of whole numbers and how this relates to multiplication. The students will be
given some form of ten flat circles be it cut out circle shapes, round lid, strings tied together to form a circle,
etc. The students will be in groups and given Skittles, M&Ms, or some other small piece of candy per table.
The circle will be used as groups and the candy as the amount that equally goes into each group. The students
will practice making groups, then the teacher will randomly call on students to see if they can explain why
they did what they did. After this, the teacher will inform the students to pull out their iPads. Then explain
that they will do a pop quiz.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The teacher will ask everyone to go to Socrative student and explain the way Socrative works. Then give them
the unique teacher room code. The students will use their tablets to answer the questions the teacher came
up with one at a time. The teacher can read the questions out loud and even the multiple chooses they have.
At the end of the quiz the students will be informed of their score
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1. 7x3=
2. 8x4=
3. 5x5=
4. 10x4=
5. 5x6=
6. 10x11=
7. 3x9=
8. 6x12=
9. 15x2=
10. 10x20=
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the Socrative activity, the students will be provided with instant final score, then I will go over every
question and work it out with the students. I will give the students opportunity to show what they have
learned. The results will be used to measure what students are struggling with in multiplication. I will see who
needs more practice or who has it down pat. The ones who know the concept can be partnered with ones
who don’t to help them out. If the teacher sees some students that completely don’t understand, I can work
one on one with the student.

How will the data be used?

The data collected will be used to determine the student that can move on and the students who need more
practice. The data collected can be used so that the teacher can differentiate instruction for those who are
showing signs of struggling with multiplication. The students who know how to multiply can be given
challenging work. This data will not be graded against the student, this is a formative assessment to see who

needs extra support on multiplication. The teacher can partner students by putting a student who
understands with a student who is struggling.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I will be using Socrative for the first time to see if students benefit from this student response tool. I will be
able to collect data to see how it helps support the students. Hopefully Socrative can offer students an
incentive. If the students like this student response tools it can be used more often to prompt students to
want to practice the content.
Reflective Practice:
This tool will be used for this activity to help support learning through feedforward information. The teacher
will be able to use this data to differentiate learning. The teacher will be able to determine what the students
are struggling in. The students will be able to learn from their misconceptions because of the feedback they
receive immediately after the quiz.
