Lesson Idea Name: Understand the Equal Sign

Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level(s): First Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE1.OA.7 Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if
equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations
are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 – 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3 – Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☒ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students will be engaged through this activity as they are in a competition with the class to
see who can get all the questions answered in the shortest amount of time. This is a mathematical matching
game that compares equations to determine which ones are equal. We are clarifying the meaning of the
equal sign each time the students get a correct match.

Representation: The teacher has facilitated the information that the students are working on, but the
students are able to individually interact with the content. The teacher is using this technology to guide the
students towards an appropriate goal.

Action and Expression: Using Quizlet allows the teacher to minimize any distractions. The students will do
their best on the matching activity and the teacher will walk around to determine who was able to complete
the lesson in the shortest amount of time. The teacher will only release the highest score to the class to
minimize the students from feeling excluded.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Students will have prior knowledge solving addition and subtraction equations. Students should also have
experience with solving addition and subtraction equations where the answer is to the left of the equal sign
and the expression that makes the equation true on the right side of the equation. Students will also have
prior knowledge with equations that have expressions on both sides of the equal sign and be able to
determine if the equation is true.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The students will solve the expressions to determine which expressions match together to make a true
equation. The students will have their own computer or tablet. The teacher will walk around and determine
which student got all the correct answers in the shortest amount of time. The students may work in pairs if
they need extra support during this activity.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☐ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
1) 8 + 8 = 10 + 6
2) 12 + 3 = 5 + 5 + 5
3) 6 + 4 = 8 + 2
4) 20 -7 = 6 + 6 + 1
5) 4 + 15 = 9 + 9 + 1
6) 4 + 4 + 4 = 7 + 5
7) 11 + 5 + 2 = 6 + 6 + 6
8) 9 + 9 + 4 = 7 + 14
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not?
This SRT activity will tell you immediately if the student is incorrect, but it will not give you the correct answer
until the student selects it.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

I will go over every question and explain how to get the correct answer. I will provide feedback to each
student and offer small group lessons to support the students that need extra help.

How will the data be used?

The student that answered the most correct answers in the shortest time will be announced to the class, that
is the only data collected as a result of this activity. This activity is a form of review and a study opportunity to
make sure that understanding is being met. There will be no grade associated with this activity, but will be a
study resource that can be sent home. Parents may monitor their kids at home with this activity, but it is
strictly used for review in this instance.

Student Response and Assessment Tools
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
Students will be able to know that the values on each side of an equal sign must be equal in order for an
equation to be true.
Reflective Practice:
I feel this lesson is a great tool to encourage student involvement. This game creates excitement with the
content. I would use this activity as a review at the end of the unit. I could further extend this activity by
allowing students to create their own quizlet to challenge their class mates.
