Lesson Idea Name: Mathematical Operations Space Race Quiz

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 6th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: MGSE6.NS.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals
using the standard algorithm for each operation.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1.1c: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves
their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

1.1d: Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to
choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore
emerging technologies.

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Instead of having the students simply take a silent assessment on paper, I can turn that into a more fun and
engaging activity instead. On Socrative there is a “Space Race” option where instead of a normal paced quiz
where everyone has to input an answer before continuing, they race against each other to see who can get
the most right as well as the fastest time. This method is sure to increase engagement as well as
entertainment.
Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
I will have a short session with the class where I will have a couple of operation problems on the smartboard
and the students will answer them. After that, I will mention that I am going to be quickly assessing them in a
fun race about the operations. That is how I will segway into the rest of the class being about this activity. The
students will be using laptops I will provide for them and get on Socrative.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Student Response and Assessment Tools
The teacher will make sure everyone is staying on task, as it still is an assessment, while the students try their
best to answer the questions as they compete with their peers. The students are going to be on laptops that I
will provide for them. The activity will last around 15-20 minutes, including the class wrap-up at the end.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☐ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes ☒ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Because I would like for the students overall to immediately see where the class stands. I won’t be showing
their names, but the idea is so they can understand where we would need to go back to review.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the activity I will show the class the overall results on how they did. I will inform them that the next day
we will go over the problems, especially the ones that are missed the most. This would be the last thing the
students do before the period ends.
How will the data be used?
The data collected will be the answers to the eight questions on the Socrative quiz I have set up. The teacher
will give it as a non-graded assessment. The answers will let me know what operations will need to be looked
over again the next day, as there will be a test coming up soon. Right after the space race is done I will share
the results with the students. This will let the students know what they will need to review. The names will be
anonymous, so they will not know who is who but only see the answers each person gave to each question.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I am trying to give different ways of giving students an assessment to a unit. This will be a way for me to see if
it is a viable way to check on their understanding as well as a way to further increase their engagement.
Reflective Practice:
This will let the students be a bit more confident in answering and contributing to class, so that I will be able
to better reach them. There will always be those certain students that hold back on speaking up during class.
This way they can answer without having to worry about their peers and what they would say or think. I could
possibly extend the activity by doing a “ticket out the door” question on Socrative as one last check for the
day before they are dismissed.
