Lesson Idea Name: Solving equations

Content Area: Mathematics - Algebra II

Grade Level(s): 11th grade

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE9-12.A.REI.3 Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable
including equations with coefficients represented by letters. For example, given ax + 3 = 7, solve for x.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1.5 Computational Thinker

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

X Other: Quizizz

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

X Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☐ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)

Type of session:

X Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding X Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

X Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity:

The primary intention of this activity is to serve as a review and assessment of core concepts from Algebra I.
Prior to the SRT activity, the teacher will lead the class in a discussion over some key terms. The teacher will
place the students into small groups and ask each group to try to define the following terms: equation,
variable, and constant. The groups will be given a few minutes to discuss while the teacher rotates
throughout the room. After just a few minutes, the teacher will ask groups to provide some of their
definitions to establish the ones the class will be using moving forward.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) X To illuminate common
misconceptions X Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and mastery
for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the activity, each student will participate in answering the instructor paced questions shown on the
linked Quizizz page. Depending on the nature of the questions, the teacher may invite some students to
provide work on the board or to justify their written answers.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

X Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select X True/False ☐ Yes/No

X Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Questions available here:https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/62b349208c43eb001d13bc7a?source=quiz_page

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes ☐ No

X Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?

☐ Yes

X No

Why or why not?

As the class works through the problems, the class will work together to answer problems that some may be
struggling with.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the activity, the students will be provided a short exit ticket assignment. This will be a quick problem or
two that the students will have to complete themselves to demonstrate their mastery of the content. These
tickets must be completed before the end of class. The responses to these tickets will be incorporated into
the data from the SRT. Additionally, students will receive individual feedback on their exit tickets.

How will the data be used?

The data will be used to determine the knowledge the students possess/lack from their previous Algebra
course. This data will determine whether the students need a more extensive review of the material, can be
accelerated towards new material, or if a highly differentiated approach is necessary.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My personal goal with this assignment is to use an informal assessment to guide my modifications to the
curriculum. I have seen entire units fall behind dramatically because students lack important prior knowledge.
I hope that with an assignment like this I can avoid that issue and provide my students with the support that
they require.

Reflective Practice:

As a review/introductory assignment, I feel that this lesson does not dramatically affect the students’ learning
on the day this lesson is taught. Instead, this lesson is supposed to inform the pacing, support, and
differentiation necessary for the upcoming unit. This will avoid teaching unprepared students which can be
frustrating for the teacher and damaging to the mathematical identities of the students.

Another way that technology could have been incorporated into this lesson is during the introduction. A word
cloud or discussion post format could have been used to share out student definitions for the selected terms.
