Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Pretty Plants

Grade Level(s)/Content Area: 1st Grade/ Science

Content Standard Addressed:

S1L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the basic needs of plants and animals.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE Educator Standard 7B: Use technology to design and implement a
variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely feedback
to students and inform instruction.

Overarching Question:

What is the function of the different parts of a plant?

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers X Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

☐ Other:

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

https://youtu.be/A-xScqCN0GA

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

X Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) X Phone X Tablet (such as iPad)
X Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)

Type of session:

☐ Teacher-Paced X Student-Paced

Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Level(s):

X Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

X Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the

technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity:

Teacher will introduce plants with a video. After discussing what they watched in the video and answering any
questions, the students will log onto the Kahoot with their devices, and will complete the Kahoot.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

X Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge X Test preparation

☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Students will use the Kahoot website to complete the quiz about vocab from the plant unit. The student
needs to have access to the code for the quiz and their device. This activity should be repeated until the
students score at least a 95%. The teacher will be able to see what questions each student got incorrect.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

X Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select X True/False ☐ Yes/No

☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (7-10). If you
cannot provide one or two critical thinking questions in your assessment, please list a question or two you
would want students to provide an open response to below. Use your Bloom’s terms to design the
question(s):

How would you define a plant?

How would you identify a plant in the wild?

Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?

X Yes

☐ No

Why or why not?

Students will use this Kahoot to review and prepare for upcoming tests. It is important for students to know
what they are getting wrong so they can review and make sure they know the correct answers when the test
comes.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? How will the data be used?

This SRS tool will be used throughout the plant unit. It will be used in stations and as a whole group review. By
the end of the unit, the goal is for each of the students to score 95% or higher on the Kahoot. They will be
able to discuss the terms and definitions included. The data will be used to design reviews, lessons,
worksheets, and activities the students can do to review and practice the material.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My goal for this activity is that this activity will give students a new and fun way to review and learn the
material. Kahoot gives the students a competitive game that allows them to review while competing against
their classmates. Teachers can see which students missed what questions, and they can also see data about
each individual question.

Reflective Practice:

I think this lesson will positively impact student learning. It includes a fun activity that allows
students to review in a fun way. I designed this lesson as an introduction to the plant unit. To further
extend this lesson, teachers could have students create their own kahoots.
