Lesson Idea Name: Kahoot! Game for elected officials

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 2nd grade
Content Standard Addressed: SS2CG2 Identify the following elected officials of the executive branch and
where they work.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1a: Students will articulate and set personal goals, develop strategies to
leverage technology to achieve them, and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

grade/259ff441-48f3-493d-8315-43c958efa9cc

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☒ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the activity, I will prepare the students with information on how we will play a Kahoot as a class that
is not graded just to ease them into the new unite about the Executive branch. They will all get their devices
ready to participate in the Kahoot. It is not an assessment that is graded but rather an assessment of what
they already might know.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: During the SRT students will use their device
and type in a code to be let into the Kahoot. As the teacher, I will have the Kahoot on the board as they
participate within the Kahoot. Students will answer each question within the time frame and selected the
best answer.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Yes, I think that gives students a chance to see where they want to improve and where they are successful
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT students will have an idea on what we are going to focus on as a class in this upcoming unit.
Students will then learn reviewed topics of new ones based on what they knew prior to the Kahoot. Then, at
the end of this lesson, over a 3–4-day period, we will play the Kahoot as a warmup assignment before the last
day of class that week since they would have learned the material for 3-4 days by then. The Kahoot will then
be a graded assessment to see the children’s understanding of material learned that week.
How will the data be used?
Information and data from the second go with the Kahoot will be used as a mental marker for the teacher to
assess the students’ knowledge for that week. If students do not seem to be on the path, I intend for them to
be at on the final go, I know as a teacher I need to spend some more time on that material before moving on.
Although I will not discuss with the class the individual assessment scores, I will break them into groups to
determine who I can help be success with the material. Students can practice different learning strategies
based on the data that comes from the Kahoot.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

My personal learning goal for this activity is to see improvement from the first-time playing t Kahoot where
students did not know very much about the topic presented to them. The final time they play the Kahoot is
after a few days spent on learning the material, so the Kahoot should be a fun review for them that allows me
to collect data on how they are doing and what I need to improve to help students master this topic.
Reflective Practice: As this being an introductory activity and an assessment, it allows me to utilize different
technology tools during the time spent mastering the unit of study. It also allows me to see the progress
based on what we had spent studying over the past few days. The assessment seems more like a fun game to
students which might help with test anxiety and allows me to collect the data I need to help my class be
successful.
