Discussion Assignment 3

I would like to start my discussions defining the meaning of “educative experience”. Dewey’s
educative experience includes the following principles: interaction and continuity, and these
elements: action and reflection. Interaction between a child and the environment is the starting point
of educative experience. Educative experience can be defined as a connection between doing and
undergoing. This kind of connection depends on the situation and the previous experience and also
influences the quality of future experience (Kairė, 2013).
Educative experience according to Dr Dewey is an interaction between a child and the environment
and that is the starting point of educative experience. According to him the interaction happens in a
continuous action which leads to the problem-oriented situation. The problem works as a stimulus for
reflection (Kairė, 2013). If the problem is identified then someone can start thinking how to solve that
problem, once the process of reflection is successful to yield a suitable answer to that problem,
therefore the knowledge is acquired.
In order to design a significant curriculum to someone’s educative experience, the curriculum should
be developed by considering the needs of environment where that person lives.

I would like again to define also the idea of experience as miseducative. Any experience is
miseducative that has the effect of arresting or distorting the growth of further experience.
Miseducative experiences are those that “narrow the field of further experience (Dewey, 1938).
According to Dr Dewey, he points out that experiences that are harmful to others are mis-educative
(Bassey, 2009). It Is understandable that miseducative experience is that one given without
considering someone’s needs and without solving someone’s experience. The idea of experience as
miseducative is the education which is not drawn from someone’s experiences.
It is always compulsory to design a curriculum which considers someone’s culture or environment in
order to leave a significant impact.
Traditional education consists of a rigid regimentation, ignoring the capacities and interests of the
learner (International Centre for Educator’s Styles, 2017). Dewey found that sound educational
experience involves both continuity and interaction between the learner and what is learned. Some
people face difficulties in their learning because some curriculum are developed using the third party
and the curriculum does not understand the culture and environment of the learner and the
interaction between learner and what is learned misses and consequently the experience becomes
miseducative which is not wished in the learning.
In my milieu the quality of education of quality is challenge and many stakeholders like UNICEF are
concerned to see how to solve this issue so that the education of quality is assured to all children
without discrimination of all forms. And the syllabi must be developed to ensure that the education of
quality to all children is delivered.
Progressive education offers learners the following: growth and expression of individuality; free
activity; learning through experience; the acquisition of skills as a means of attaining ends which are
vital and appealing to students; and, becoming acquainted with a changing world (International
Centre for Educator’s Styles, 2017).
Conclusion
The view of experience is most prevalent in my milieu is educative experience, the government of
Rwanda is committed to ensure that education offered can help learners to develop their talents,
their expression of individuality and learning through experience is encouraged so that a learner
should be connected to his/ her environment.
My opinion to that philosophy of educative experience, this will enable a country to get developed
and the education should be more inclusive education.
