Very important rules for Solar Returns

1. The Twenty days before and after a birthday are very

important, in both positive and negative terms. Often, in
those days, the most important events of the entire year
take place; it is foolish to think that a Solar Return may
have its effect months or weeks in advance or be delayed
in reference to the date of a birthday;
2. Your birthday is really a very special day in which
extraordinary events may occur;
3. If there are birthdays close together in your family,
those days become “explosive”; true fuses around which
more events tend to be concentrated;
4. If the Ascendant or a stellium (three or more planets)
or the Sun of a Solar Return fall in the 1st, 6th or 12th
house, almost without any difference between them, the
year will probably be a difficult one, ruinous, dangerous,
negative all round and not specifically for health or work
reasons or in terms of affections; if you really cannot
leave (in other words get a relocated Solar Return), try to
use the rules for exorcising the symbols, for example, an
aimed surgery. Never try to get important medical
examinations or surgical operations twenty days before
or after your birthday, as well as the birthdays of the
persons who are closest to you; a serious disease may
also come along in a year in which the Solar return is very
positive: this depends on the fact that, for example, a
carcinogenic process, which started seven or ten years
earlier, at the point of maturing, will necessarily come
out and no RSR will change things; in these cases,
however, a good RSR in progress can significantly aid
recovery in relation to the disease; a Saturn, a Uranus, a
Neptune or a Pluto can be placed in the 1st, 6th or 12th
house of Solar Return, but obviously if they can be
avoided, it is better to do so; let's not forget that if the SR
is negative, the negative events may not necessarily take
place during the year (from birthday to birthday), but if
negative events occur then the SR is certainly negative;
5. All of the above also applies to Mars in the 12th, 6th or
1st house of Solar Return: this placement, even alone, is
able to ruin a year that was meant to be positive, as a
result of other elements regarding transits or Solar
return;
6. When examining the Solar return chart we
recommend only taking into account a few but certain
elements: a) where Solar Return Ascendant falls
compared to the birth houses; b) where a Solar Return
stellium falls compared to the houses of Solar Return; c)
where the Sun of Solar Return falls compared to the
houses of Solar Return; d) where the bad ones fall (but
above all Mars) compared to the SR houses; e)
subsequently, but only subsequently, other positions of
the planets in the houses; we recommend decidedly not
to take other elements into account, such as for example
if the planet is retrograde or if it makes a positive or
negative aspect, because such elements do have a very
low value, in the order of a decimal fraction compared to
the numbers of the listed positions; if the Mars that falls
in the 6th house is supported by trines and sextiles, in
practical terms the result will be the same as that of an
injured Mars;
7. The 7th house almost always regards documents with
tax stamps, trouble with the law, possible conflict with
justice, all kinds of wars, tensions of all kind, strong
quarrels, disagreements with partners or separations,
declared animosity, even attempts on your life or
damage to your property;
8. Jupiter in the 2nd, 7th and 8th house both in a Solar
return chart or transiting in a birth chart, acts as a
bistable oscillator, in the sense that it tends to invert the
pre-existent situation: if there is calm it brings on a storm
and if there is a war it helps to bring back peace;
9. The values of the 2nd and 8th house indicate, in the
majority of cases, large outgoings of money, really big
money losses and much less incoming money; if the
subject has big on-going financial problems, the last thing
that is needed is to place a Jupiter in the 2nd or 8th
house;
10. The 11th house often relates to death and mourning,
much more than the 8th house (in 90 % of cases, an 8th
house emphasis by SR or by transits, tells us about
financial problems rather than death); in spite of this we
must not avoid using it: you only die once and during
your lifetime there are only a few significant deaths; the
same thing applies for the 3rd and the 9th with respect
to accidents, and the 5th with regard to your children
and so on;
11. The trines and the sextiles of Uranus and Neptune
are often above all announcers of bad luck (also, trines
and sextiles are often bringers of bad things);
12. In the respect of transits the semi-squares and
sesqui-square are of huge importance, exactly like the
squares and oppositions; instead, semisextiles, sextiles
and quincunx have a very low level of influence, or even
no influence at all;
13. The Ascendant in the 10th house of a Solar return
almost always brings exceptionally positive things; on the
contrary Jupiter on the Midheaven of the Solar return,
has a lower influence than the Ascendant in the same
position;
14. The Ascendant in the 10th house, when
simultaneously there is a bad transit of Saturn or Uranus
or Neptune or Pluto, to the Midheaven, or in negative
aspect to Ascendant, Sun or Moon (including
conjunctions), produces noteworthy breakdowns: quite
prominent damage, that is not at all negligible; it is much
better, if you do not have a lot of experience, to place
Jupiter close to the Midheaven, or even Venus or the
Sun, rather than an AS in the 10th that, in many cases,
may strongly damage the subject concerned;
15. During days in which there are many contemporary
aspects, both positive and negative, significant events
could take place, so it’s better to focus on our
observations and put us in a state of watchful defence;
16. Some of the most dramatic moments in a life arrive
when transiting Saturn or Uranus, or Neptune, or Pluto,
in hard aspect to natal Sun, Ascendant, Midheaven or
Moon, are added to an Ascendant, a stellium, a Sun or a
Mars of Solar return in the first, sixth or twelfth house of
the Solar Return;
17. Every planet placement in a birth chart is enhanced
by the transits and by the Solar return; if a person, for
example, has a bad aspected natal Uranus in the eighth
house, when transiting Uranus form an opposition to
that placement, you can expect serious financial
troubles;
18. The positive effect of the tenth House of the Solar
Return can also be about a single event and not
necessarily a numerous series of positive events;
19. We must never forget that there are three relevant
variables, which explain how a life evolves: genetic
information, that is the biological inheritance from the
parents transmitted through deoxyribonucleic acid, the
astral conditioning and the social, economic, cultural,
historical and political conditions of the place in which
one is born and lives;
20. In order to predict when the events reported by a
Solar return will take place, which is indeed a very
difficult task, it’s useful to consider the Lunar returns as
well as the transits of the fast moving planets; 21. We
should not interpret the transiting planets in the houses
of the birth chart in the same way as we interpret the
planet house positions in the Solar Return;
22. If the indications of the transits and of the Solar
return are contradicting each other, it is necessary to do
the following; in the presence of very hard and
threatening transits and a neutral, not dangerous Solar
return, we will not have to worry because the year will
not be marked by dramatic events; if alternatively, the
transits are not very significant, almost neutral, not at all
fearful, and instead, the Solar return is bad, heavy, even
only with an Ascendant in the first, sixth or twelfth
house, then we should certainly expect a very insidious
and negative year. The Solar return sky has much more
influence than the birth one with the relative transits:
therefore do not deceive yourselves, that in a year with
the Sun in the first house, you will be protected by a
transit of Jupiter in good aspect with your natal Sun; in
the same way do not worry too much for a Uranus that
transits in aspect to your natal Mars in the twelfth house
if you have got a good relocated Solar Return;
23. Within which orb a transit should be considered
active? There is no a strict rule, and in any case it
depends on the transiting planet which form the aspect;
the fast moving planets, like Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus
and Mars, may generally be perceived 5 degrees before
and after the exact orb of the aspect (such as a
conjunction, square, sextile, etc); generally the transits of
Jupiter and Saturn can be considered active within a 3
degrees orb before and after the exact aspect; instead,
for Uranus and Neptune, the orb to use is between 1 or 2
degrees, but at times they have impact even with wider
orbs if for example at same time are involved transits of
fast moving planets that acts as a trigger; instead, for
Pluto which moves very slowly and can remain for years
in the same spot, we must consider at most a 1 degree
orb, except for the cases described above; as far as the
semi-squares and the sesqui-squares are concerned, it is
better to use tight orbs as 2 or 3 degrees for the fast
moving planets and 1 or 2 degrees for the outer planets;
24. The transits of Mars tend to be perceived in advance,
in the sense that the applying transits of Mars are more
powerful than the separating ones; but this should not
be considered an absolute rule;
25. Transits must be considered both negative and
positive at the same time, whether they are square or
trine transits; to understand whether a transit will affect
in a positive or negative way, it has to be carefully
analyzed the Solar return;
26. It is better to remember that often the eighth house
regards prison; the Sun and the 4/6 Ascendant in the
eighth house, if really necessary, and if there are no
particular risks for the subject, may be allowed but for no
reason can we place a stellium in the eighth house,
because it could have the same negative impact of a
stellium in the three very dangerous houses (the first,
sixth and twelfth);
27. Due to the slowness of all planets during their
periods of retrograding the same transit, instead of
occurring just once, will happen at least three times; The
first (called first pass) when the planet is still direct; the
second (called second pass) when the planet is
retrograde; and the third (called third pass) when the
planet has resumed its forward or direct motion. These
transits are far more important than others;
28. The transits of the planets, especially the slow ones,
even in the empty houses, are extremely relevant and
they give us very precious information;
29. The way a transit affects the subject is determined by
his natal chart. In order to predict the effects of a
particular transit, it is very useful to ask the person what
happened in the past when the same transit occurred;
for example, a passage of Jupiter in the second house
may bring a lot of incoming as well as outgoing money,
and in order to make reliable predictions, it is useful to
ask the person what happened in his life twelve years
before when the same transit took place;
30. One of the fundamental rules for interpreting a Solar
return chart is that of giving very little importance to the
angular aspects that planets make to each other, and
great importance instead to the placement of the planets
in the houses of a SR chart;
31. The danger of a stellium in first or twelfth house of
the SR must be considered even if it splits up in equal or
unequal parts, between the houses; a stellium between
the twelfth and the first is equal to a stellium in the
twelfth, even if, for example, Jupiter is in the twelfth
house and Venus and Mercury in the first;
32. Another extremely important rule you must follow is
to avoid the placement of a potentially dangerous planet
or of the ascendant near the cusp of the first, sixth or
twelfth house, the distance from the cusp must be of 2
and a half degrees; it is worth verifying whether this
distance remains intact also by subtracting 15 minutes
from the birth time;
33. Remember that Saturn always gets the better of
Jupiter, Venus, Sun etc; therefore, it goes without saying
that we cannot, for example, place a Saturn near the
Midheaven, thereby deceiving ourselves that the Sun and
Jupiter in tenth will counterbalance its negative effects;
for the same reason, bearing in mind the importance of
“Gauquelin’s plus zones”, it’s useless to put for example
a Jupiter in the tenth house, within five degrees from
Midheaven, and a Saturn at the same distance, in the
ninth house: in the end the second will prevail and for
what concerns work / emancipation / success / prestige
we will have a year decidedly marked by Saturn; the
same applies if we put Saturn and Jupiter in the seventh
or in the second house and so on.
34. It is strongly advisable not to place Saturn and Mars
in the same house of SR, whatever it is, except for the
3th and 9th house. If not, you may suffer serious harm as
a result of this.
VERY IMPORTANT RULES FOR LUNAR RETURN
1. From the standpoint of its expressive and operative
power, the Lunar return has a much lower impact than
the Solar return within which it acts;
2. The Lunar return can never subvert the general
indications of the Solar return that contains it;
3. The Lunar return can only have a modulating effect
with respect to the Solar return in progress. Through a
relocated lunar return for that specific month we can
improve our sentimental life if the same was already
valorised in the Solar return by for example a positive
emphasis on the 5th house;
4. The Lunar return can be very useful for dating the
events inside the current Solar return;
5. A relocated Lunar Return cannot replace a relocated
Solar Return: if the subject doesn’t travel on his solar
return, and then regrets it, he cannot think of replacing
the effect of a missed relocated solar return with 12-13
relocated lunar returns;
6. Exploiting the synergy effect, it is possible and useful
for a certain month to travel on a Lunar return, along
with positive transits and with a good relocated solar
return in progress, to perhaps obtain, what we desire in
that month and not in another;
7. Those who can afford it in terms of money and time,
can certainly obtain fantastic results by travelling on their
solar return and on every lunar return of that specific
year;
8. The preceding rule is certainly true, although we need
to add that often it is useless, superfluous, and
redundant, for the reasons which apply to the preceding
rules;
9. Even an apparently terrible lunar return cannot cause
serious damages if it acts within a good relocated solar
return;
10. Even an apparently marvellous lunar return will bring
few results if it takes place within a weak relocated solar
return;
11. We might decide to travel on our lunar return
accepting to put, for example, an Ascendant of the LR in
the radix twelfth house, if at the same time this allows us
for example, to position a beautiful Venus – Jupiter
conjunction in the fifth house: if this sector is enhanced
in the current relocated solar return, this conjunction
might bring you a new and happy loving relationship,
without causing you any serious health problems, but
perhaps give you a simple cold;
12. The reading of the Lunar return is practically the
same as that of the Solar return, except for the rules we
have already described;
13. The Lunar return, like the Solar return, is always
"aimed", even if you decide to remain in the city where
you live;
14. Also for the RLR, as with the RSR, it is sufficient to
stay for 1 minute in the return location when the lunar
return occurs; if you are not sure of your time of birth, it
is possible to remain in that place chosen for an hour
before to an hour after the moment of the return; to
remain in that location all day 24 hours or longer does
not make any sense;
15. In Ciro Discepolo’s books you can read differing
opinions of other astrologers about relocated solar
return and lunar return and the relative answers of Ciro
Discepolo;
16. If the lunar return goes in a direction that is exactly
the opposite to the solar return that affects the entire
year, the result you are looking for will hardly be realized.
For example, if you have placed a narrow Mars - Saturn
conjunction (if possible it is always best to avoid it) in the
fourth house and then you move for a relocated lunar
return to put a Jupiter-Venus conjunction in the fourth
house of the lunar return chart, perhaps to try to buy or
sell a property at their best, the result will be almost nil;
17. It’s not true that by putting a Mars in a fourth house
of a relocated lunar return we may cause problems for
our parents, rather this placement will increase our
personal focus on the problems of our parents; the same
applies in reverse, for a Venus in the fourth house;
18. As for the RSR, also the RLRs can help quite a lot in
correcting our birth time; in fact, after a month, the
astrologer is able to understand if the Mars in a lunar
return has fallen in the third
