EXHIBITION OF INDIGENOUS AND ETHNOGRAPHIC FILMS

IUAES 2021 Yucatán, Congress

“Bio-Cultural Heritages In Face Of the Anthropocene”

Call for entries

A core component of the IUAES 2021 congress is the Exhibition of Indigenous

and Ethnographic Films. It is a non-competitive film event seeking to present and
discuss contemporary audio-visual productions on relevant anthropological topics,
regardless of format or genre (community, collaborative, observational, narrative,
ethno-fictional, experimental, animation documentaries or films, etc.), created by
anthropologists, filmmakers and documentalists or indigenous communities and
organizations. We are particularly interested in works that query or challenge
conventions that are usually understood as ethnographic cinema and audio-visual
anthropology, or which revert hegemonic views on otherness. Beyond digital
projection and reproduction, we will attempt to hold reflections and in-depth
discussions of each work exhibited through lectures and conversations with guest
producers and specialists.

TOPIC
Bio-cultural Heritages In Face Of the Anthropocene
Still under debate, the concept of “Anthropocene” is intended to account for the
continuous and prolonged accumulation of a development model that is driven by
the global, economic and geo-political system and whose impacts are of such
magnitude as to affect planet Earth by creating a new geological era. It is the first
one developed by humanity and its inexorable environmental manifestations
include excessive mineral extraction, the devastation of natural resources, gas
emissions that cause global warming, as well as the constant waste of plastic and
other types of materials that saturate soils and oceans.
In face of this situation, technological solutions have been proposed, either for the
present or for the future whose response is ultimately on the same level as the
impacts themselves. However, we may resort to other alternatives, such as bio-
cultural heritage in particular, thus recovering different ways of relating to the world
based on the local and regional knowledge that constitutes a body of knowledge
preserved and transmitted by numerous socio-cultural groups around the world
over centuries. From these heritages, there emanate more balanced practices and
modes of nature/society articulation and a logic of respect and recognition for
nature while at the same time emphasising its character of vulnerability and
resistance. Against this backdrop, it appears urgent for us to rethink and discuss
the various manners in which bio-cultural heritages represent a response to the
Anthropocene. Both ethnographic and indigenous films offer narrative proposals
that appeal to reason, but also to the senses and emotions, spurring us into action
in dealing with these important topics.
