INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
Professional Ethics are the guiding principles that are to be
followed by or expected to be followed by the people in that
profession.

These principles in any company or Organization group can be


termed as ethics.

Some Organizations may define their ethical approach in terms of


number of components

The main objectives of professional ethics and human values
To know the moral values to guide the engineering profession
To justify the moral judgment concern to the profession
To resolve the moral issues in the profession

MORALS
Morals are the Welfare principles stated by the wise people, based on their
experience and wisdom.
Morality is concerned with principles and practices of moral such as what is
right or wrong about handing the situation.
Always try to do right thing, going against everyone else if everyone else is
doing the wrong thing .Telling the truth even if it is circumstance that the
person could get in trouble.

INTEGRITY

Integrity may be defined as the unity of thought, word and deed(Honesty)


and open mindedness.

It also include the capacity to communicate the factual information so that


others can make well informed decisions.

Moral integrity is defined as a virtue which reflects a consistency of ones


attitudes , emotions and conduct in relation to justified moral values.

WORK ETHICS

Work ethics is defined as a set of attitudes concerned with the value of


work, which forms the motivational orientation.
Work ethics can also be defined as a set of moral principles an employee
can follow in his job.
Certain factors come together to create a strong work ethics such as:
Integrity: With this an employee can build trusting relationships with clients
co workers and supervisors.
Sense of responsibility: with this an employee can put his best effort in
time and complete the work to best of his family.
Emphasis on Quality: employees with srong work ethics care about the
quality of their work, they do their best to produce great work.
Discipline :an employee with good discipline with always be focussed on his
goals and is determined to complete the assignments.
Sense of Team Work: An employee with a his sense of team work helps a
team to meet its goals and deliver quality work.

WORK ETHICS: INDUSTRY VS SOCIETY
Industry and society are the two systems which interact with each
other and are independent.

Society requires industry or business system which provides


manufacturing distribution and consumption activities

A lot of transactions and interactions between these sub systems


involving people are needed for the welfare of the society.

Therefore the work ethics plays a major role because it promotes self
respect, good for the family, self esteem and obligations to the society
and allows the world of prosper.

By work ethics duties to the self ,family, society and nation are fulfilled
rights of individuals are respected values and morals are cultivated and
enjoyed by all human beings. Further quality of life improved and the
environment is projected.

SERVICE LEARNING
Service learning means learning the service procedures rules
policies and conditions other than the technical trade practices.

The service learning includes the characteristics of the work


basic requirements security of the job and awareness of the
procedures rules and policies while taking decisions and actions.

Service learning helps the people to interact ethically with


colleagues to effectively coordinates with other departments to
interact cordially with other people and to maintain all these
friendly interactions.

The service learning can be defined as the non paid activity to
which service is provided on voluntary basis to the public non
profitable institutions and characteristics organizations.

For example :Study of health and welfare system of a village or


school by the employees civil engineering conduction a sewage

Integrating the learning into a service project is a key to successful service
learning.

VIRTUES
Virtues are the behaviors showing high moral standards.
These are morally good and desirable in a person .
Virtues are also known as positive and preferred values.
Virtues are desirable attitudes motives and emotions that enable us to be
successful and to act in ways that develops our highest potential.
They energize and enable us to pursue the ideals that we have adopted.
Honesty courage compassion generosity integrity fairness self control and
transparency are the examples of virtues.
Virtues person is the ethical person.
Virtues are the tendencies that include problem solving through peaceful
and constructive means.
They are like a habits,once acquired they become characteristics of a person.

CIVIC VIRTUES
Civic virtues are the moral duties and fundamental rights as a citizen of
country or an integral part of society and environment.
We can exhibit civic virtues by voting volunteering and organizing welfare
groups and meetings.
The different moral duties are(the civic virtues one should develop)
Paying the tax to the government
Keeping the surrounding clean and green
Preventing the pollution of air water and land
Following the road safety rules

Casting the vote for local, state and central govt
Contesting the elections to the loacal,state and central govt
Looking after the public welfare facility such as schools hospitals transport or
communication facilities for the residents.

Right to seek legal remedies and action for public problems.

For example: citizens must know what constitution says
and how the government is working and what the
government is supposed to do and what not to do.
We should know the responsibilities as citizen besides
duties and rights.
We must be able to recognize when the government or
another citizen encroach our rights.

Self Restraint-¸ÀéAiÀÄA ¸ÀAAiÀĪÀÄ

For example: in order to live the citizens in a free society


each citizen must be able to control himself, otherwise we
need police to control.
The people should know that the happiness is achieved and
maintained through virtues and morals.

For example:It means that the citizens must be proud of their
rights and have the courage to stand up in public and defend their
rights.

For example: it means that the citizens should not be
dependent on others for their basic needs,they do not need
a large provider government.
Citizens who cannot provide for themselves will need a large
government take care of them.
Once citizens become dependent on government for their
basic needs the people are no longer in a position to demand
that government act within the confines of the
constitution.
Only a strong self reliant citizens will be able the blessings
of liberty.

Respect for others

It is the basic requirement for building friendship, team


work to recognize and sustain ourselves in the society and
to be energetic.
The principles to be followed in this regard are
Recognize and accept the existence of other persons as
human beings like you
Respect other ideas words and actions
We need to listen others and if they commit mistakes one
can correct or warn.
Show goodwill on others love others
Allow others to grow and encourage them to grow.
Allow others to improve their performance by learning
properly and by putting more efforts.

Living Peacefully
To Live peacefully one should start creating peace within
himself and this kind of attitude should begin at home.
Then only one can spread peace to family, organization
where one works and then to the whole world including the
environment who are at peace can only spread the peace.
Means to be adopted for living peacefully(what should one do
or not do live peacefully)
Order in ones life (discipline,self regulation and duty)
Pure thoughts in ones soul(loving others,blessing
others,friendly and not criticizing or hurting others by
thought word or deed)
Creativity in ones head(Useful and constructive)
Get good health /body(Physical strength for service)
Help the needy with heart and hands
Provide service to the poor people
Do not torture or hurt others either physically verbally or
mentally.

Caring
Caring is the displaying of kindness and concern for others.
It is a process which exhibits the interest in support for the
welfare of others with fairness, impartially and justice in all
activities among the employees.
It includes showing respect to the feelings of others and
also respecting and preserving the interest of all others
concerned.
Caring can be exhibited in activities such as friendship
family transactions involvement in social clubs,professional
societies community activities and national and
interational councils.

Sharing
Sharing is the process of transfer of knowledge experience
commodities and facilities with others.
The transfer should be legal ,positive,genuine and without
any expectations in return.
Sharing is process of using ,occupying or enjoying
something jointly with others.

For the humanity, sharing is a culture.

• What are Professional Ethics?
• Every profession has its particular rules, regulations, or
you could say principles.
• A person when choosing a job must know that specific
profession. Ethics means principles of something. In
different roles, they have ethics according to their
knowledge about the situation, how people belonging to
that profession should behave.
• Professional ethics is guidance for people working in a
particular profession that tells them what they supposed
to do and what they are not supposed to do while
working there.
• A particular profession has its specific behavior, and
everyone must follow them.
Examples of Professional Ethics

• Professional Ethics’ best example can be the


one Doctors take. The Hippocratic Oath, taken
by doctors when they are rewarded the degree
in medicine. This oath is one of the ethics that
have to follow before practicing medicine. And,
every ethics differs depending upon the type of
profession a person has.
Types of Professional Ethics
• Every profession has its way of dealing and making the
profession work.
• Although ethics differ in every profession, some
principle ethics are universal.
• They are followed by each profession, which is being
honest in their work and serving the people along
with trustworthiness, respecting others, honesty,
accountability, abiding by the rules and avoiding
harming anyone.
• Generally, the rules mentioned above are followed by
every professional.
• And, if anyone fails to do so, s/he becomes unworthy
of being in that profession. Some particular
associations around the world and nation determine
the ethics of a specific profession. And it has to be
followed by the people with full honesty.
Types of Professional Ethics
1. Media and their Professional Ethics
Journalists or anyone related to media has a great responsibility for
transparency.
No one in the media should be biased regarding any happenings around the
world. The job of journalists is fierce and terrifying because they are always in
the target. If any journalist gives news related to a criminal s/he has a chance
that
they can be harmed.
2. Judicial and Legal Professional Ethics
A person involved in a legal or judicial business, must defend their clients or
prosecute the criminal with honesty.
3. Engineer’s Professional Ethics
There is so much responsibility on the shoulders of Engineers. They are the one
building houses, dams, highways, any gadget or even a car. They have to be
honest
enough while designing and making them.
4. Medical Professional Ethics
the nurses and doctors are advised to respect the patient’s dignity, respect the
human right.
