Skywalk project gets under way
By Our Staff Reporter
The Corporation started work on the skywalk project, which
will connect Mambalam Railway Station with T. Nagar Bus
Terminus, last week.
Its workers installed huge barricades near the bus terminus.
Conceived four years back, the project will be completed in
15 months at a cost of Rs 26.27 crores.
The project is funded by Chennai Smart City Limited.
The structure will align with the Railway Border Road and

Free wi-fi soon in
Natesan, Sivan parks
After providing free wi-fi in the Pedestrian
Plaza in Pondy Bazaar, the Corporation has
launched a similar service in Nageswara Rao
Park in Mylapore.for morning walkers and
joggers.
The free wifi has been provided by a private
company, ACT Fibrenet, under its corporate
social responsibility initiative, an official said.
Visitors can use the wi-fi free of cost for 45
minutes a day in the park at a speed of 20
Mbps. Wi-fi hotspots have been installed in
eight locations inside the park. Each hotspot
will be able to serve 250-300 connections, the
official said.
The inaugural function was attended by G.
Prakash (Corporation Commissioner) and R.
Nataraj (Mylapore MLA).
A corporation official said that wi-fi facility
will soon be provided in T. Nagar’s Natesan
Park, Anna Nagar’s Tower Park, KK Nagar’s
Sivan Park and Adyar’s Indira Nagar Park.

Now, track MTC buses on phone
with ‘Chalo’ app
Just like Ola and Uber, passengers can now live track MTC buses in the
city using ‘Chalo’ app.
The app provides details on nearest bus stops and the next five buses
scheduled to arrive at any selected stop in both online and offline modes.
Users can also search timings of buses along specific authorised routes.
For instance, for route 570 (Kelambakkam to Koyambedu CMBT), the app
will show the source, destination and list of bus stops on the route. Also
a live map, showing the present location of buses plying on the route, will
be displayed for users. By selecting one of the buses, passengers may get
to know when it would reach the nearest bus stop (based on GPS).
Another common confusion among passengers is route numbers. MTC
operates more than 650 routes. To eliminate this problem, the app
provides the list of bus numbers between any two points. If a commuter
is in T. Nagar and wants to go to Nanganallur, all he/she needs to do is to
enter the source and destination in the appropriate search boxes. Within
seconds, the app will display information that 129C, 9M, 79 and 155A are
the available options from T. Nagar to Nanganallur along with approximate
fare in each of the buses.
A senior MTC official said that the app is a beta version (or test-run) of
the soon-to-be-launched government’s Locate My Bus App (LAMB). More
than 90% of the total of 3,300 MTC buses were fitted with GPS devices and
brought under the app’s ambit. It will be expanded soon to other buses
based on response from the public and after correcting internal errors, he
said and added, “We hope this will encourage more passengers to opt for
MTC buses over cabs or share autos”. Accuracy will be within a margin of
1 minute or 10% of predicted time.

The State Human Rights
Commission (SHRC) has di-
rected the Tamilnadu govern-
ment to pay a compensation
of Rs. 50,000 to a youth and
his mother who were man-
handled by traffic police per-
sonnel in the city two years
ago.
A video clip of the incident
had gone viral on social media
soon after the incident. The
commission took suo motu
cognizance of the incident
based on media reports and,
subsequently, the victim too
petitioned the commission.
According to the petition by
M. Prakash (then 21), on April
2, 2018, police had intercepted
his two-wheeler while he was
riding back home from T.
Nagar after shopping. His
mother and sister were riding
pillion.
Prakash stated that police
used filthy language and when
he took out vehicle documents,
they demanded Rs. 500. The
complainant claimed that he
told police that he would pay
the amount if a receipt was
provided and that they refused.
Subsequently, an officer
tried to slap Prakash and, when
his mother intervened, she was
pushed down by a woman con-
stable. After this, the police-
men ganged up and assaulted
him, the video of which went
viral on social media, accord-
ing to the petition.
In response, the police per-
sonnel concerned, sub-inspec-
tors Suresh, Jayaram,
Indumathi and
Suyambulingam, and inspec-
tor Prabhu attached to the
Mambalam police station sub-
mitted that the complaint was
false and concocted to conceal
the complainant’s disobedi-
ence of traffic rules.
The policemen submitted
that the response from them
was in response to the
complainant’s behaviour and
even the CCTV camera foot-
age proved the same and
sought to dismiss the petition.
After perusing the submis-
sions of both sides, SHRC act-

Coronavirus scare hits hotel business

Star hotels across the city are recording a steep fall in occupancy rates as several domestic
travellers and in-bound tourists have cancelled their reservations due to the scare of coronavirus.
This has forced several top hotels to slash their room tariff.
T. Nataraajan (Honorary Secretary, South India Hotels and Restaurants Association) said
that star hotels are witnessing an average room cancellation rate of 20% after the outbreak.
A 5-star hotel in T. Nagar is keeping its facility out-of-bounds for foreign nationals.
“We are cancelling rooms booked by persons from countries identified by the Union
government as most-infected by Covid-19,” a hotel official said.

Talk on the works of ‘Henrik Johan
Ibsen’ today evening

works of Henrik Johan Ibsen (Renowned Norwegian playwright and
considered the Father of Realism) at 5 p.m on March 15 as part of
Ibsen’s 119th birth anniversary celebrations.
His iconic drama ‘The Dolls House’ is considered the first feminist
drama.
The talk will include a presentation on Ibsen’s works and screening
of an abridged version of ‘The Dolls House’ play.
Kuvikam Illam was started to promote Tamil literary activities.
It is managed by Kirubanandan and Sundararajan. They said that
the name Kuvikam was coined to signify combined activity of ‘gathering’
and ‘focus’.
It e-publishes literary articles every fortnight, and the articles can
be read in the website https://kuvikam.com. The e-magazine has been
in publication for more than 4 years and has so far published 1250
digital pages containing stories, poems, contemporary articles, short
films and audio files all of which can be accessed and read in the website.
Tamil authors and young writers can get their writings published in
print at nominal coat through Kuvikam Pathippam, the organisation’s
printing wing.
It also offers a platform for exchange of books for readers.
The Illam functions from 4 p.m to 7 p.m on weekdays and from 10.30

Chennai Metro takes
precautions against
coronavirus

Chennai Metro is conducting
awareness campaigns on
precautions to be taken
against novel coronavirus
(COVID-19) at its facilities.
It is conducting campaigns
in its stations, and its
volunteers demonstrate the
essential precautions like
covering the face while sneez-
ing and frequent washing of
hands with soap.
A Chennai Metro official said
that bulk text messages are
also being sent.
“We are also planning to
undertake disinfection exercise
in stations before train services
start in the morning and after
the services end.”
Notices have been put up
near ticket counters of metro
rail stations cautioning
commuters about the virus.
Staff have been advised to wear
masks at the counters.
Special precautions have
been taken at the Airport
station where many passen-
gers arrive from foreign
locations.
