Breweries Waste Management

The three main components of breweries waste are :

1. Spent grains
2. Spent hops
3. Spent turbs
4. Residuals Brewer’s yeast

Most of the breweries realize the potential of the spent grains and they sell
it off to use it as cattle-feed or it is also used for composting.

Compared with spent grain, spent hops have a higher fibre content.
However, the energy that animals can gain from spent hops as feed
compared to that of spent grain as animal feed is 50% less. Some brewers
add their spent hops to their spent grain for disposal, however this is
considered to compromise the sensory quality with many animals rejecting
the feed. On the other hand, this method is much more convenient for
breweries who produce smaller volumes.

The most common disposal method for spent hops is for fertiliser, however
in comparison to the other by-products spent hops/trub shows a larger
distribution of methods used by breweries

Similar to spent grain, some breweries sell their spent yeast as animal feed
as a source of protein and water-soluble vitamins. Most breweries with
sufficient production frequency re-use some of their relatively fresh yeast
to inoculate the next batch of wort.

The regulatory authorities have laid out certain standards for the industries
to treat the wastewater before discharging it into the regular municipal
waste treatment operations.
What Is Brewery Wastewater Treatment?
The effluent is produced in the process of beer making has the big and
various types of suspended solids such as hops, yeasts, grains and sugar as
well. And these solids can’t be broken easily and they also consume oxygen.
So, after the removal of them, it is necessary to set the sludge and balance
the pH with the bacteria and microorganisms. Because it is possible these
after products also be caustic or acidic and to treat them is necessary for the
further Brewery Wastewater Treatment.

This process is divided into some steps and they are given below:

 Remove Large Solids And Screening.

 Set The Sludge, And Remove As Much As Possible.
 Balance Ph.
 Bio- Digesting.
 High-Temperature Sump Pumping.

Ministry of Environment CPCB has laid out various technical standards

for the waste water treatment.
