HITI’O - The rules lain out in this booklet are for old shatar. - Modern shatar is almost identical to chess, thus the rules for old shatar would be much more interesting, as it plays very different and has a number of unique rules. - I've done my best to find all the old shatar rules by researching in English, Japanese and Chinese. Unfortunately I don't know any Mongolian. - The graphics in the booklet are all created by me based on a traditional shatar set. - The board was traditionally not checkered, but most shatar players use a checkered board nowadays. The noyon is most often depicted as a leader sitting on a throne. - The game is won by checkmating the noyon. - Anoyon cannot check-mate another noyon. - The noyon moves one @ space in any direction. - He cannot castle like in chess. - The baras is most often depicted as a magical lion anda leopard. - It moves like a rook or one space diagonally. - The teme is most often depicted as a camel. - It moves like a bishop in chess: diagonally as many open spaces as it wants. - It cannot deliver mate. -In an older 1-3 spaces diagonally. variant it moved only |Z aN - The mori is depicted as a horse or pony. - It moves like a knight in 3 chess: Two spaces and one to the side in an "L" shape. - It can jump other pieces. - The mori cannot deliver mate. ih i ll 4q - The terge is depicted as a chariot. - It moves like a rook in chess: As many open spaces in a straight line as it wants. & =m rl - The fu is depicted as a smaller version of the baras. Usually as a magical lion and a leopard. - It moves like a pawn in chess: one space forward, but capturing on the diagonal. - Upon reaching the 8th rank a fu must promote toa baras. If it goes back past the 6th rank, it becomes even stronger and moves like the queen in chess. - Special opening moves are explained in the setup section. - This is the shatar setup. The old shatar rules have the noyon and baras mirror eachother. - The first move in shatar has the "white" player move their baras fu two spaces and the "black" player their noyan fu two spaces. 8 SPSCHdb PUSS - The first pawn move is the only double space pawn move allowed in the game. - Baremate is a draw. - Tuuxai: like Komi in Go. If the opposing player has only two pieces(noyan and another piece), then you must make a check with terge or baras and consecutivly check before chekmate. Before checkmate, the number of consecutive checks is the number of tuuxai. If player wins by common checkmate like chess, he only gets one tuuxai. A player usually leaves the enemy with one noyan and one fu to allow time to put his pieces into good positions for making consecutive checks. - There are different types of check: Shak is given by queen, rook or knight; Tuk is given by a bishop, and zod is given by a pawn. As written above, checkmate with a knight is forbidden. Moreover, one may not mate except by a shak (i.e., checking by queen or rook), or by a mate that is followed after a series of checks that included at least one shak. E.g., if we mate the opponent after checking with a knight, then in the next move with a pawn, and then mating with a bishop, then the game is won. If one mates the king without fulfilling the criterium, i.e., with a bishop or pawn, or after a series of bishop and pawn checks, then the game is a draw - this is called Niol.
