CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale of the Study

Introduction

One of the most recent public health emergencies of global concern is the recent COVID-

19 pandemic, which started in China and almost infected every country in the whole world. This

disease is caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2, previously known as 2019-nCoV) and

has received global attention from growing infections and on how to eradicate the disease and

flatten the curve of infections (Guo et al., 2020). The unfortunate pandemic affected not only

the economy and tourism of the country but as well as education. In order to solve the problem,

the Department of Education (DepEd) implemented the new normal way of learning. The

distance learning which consists of Online, Blended and Modular modalities were chosen by

students depending on their resources. This study aims to determine the impacts of COVID-19

among students specially in this new normal way of education.

5
Theoretical Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the Philippine education sector not only to upgrade

its capabilities for remote learning, but more importantly, to realize that it could barely survive

without the social, economic, and political problems of the country being resolved. As it appears,

charging head on into a crisis with these problems as baggage would require Filipino students to

take charge of their education, since their respective families and teachers can only do so much

to help them. However, there is no need to leave these students alone to fend for themselves.

Rather, an opportunity presents itself: to gather students together into small communities –

communities of learning and inquiry – with the help of technology. With the new strategies being

developed and reintroduced, the direction now seems to point to the possibility of fostering

communities of learning and inquiry through distance education (Spencer, 2020), preferably,

using social media. In the end, it will be noteworthy for future researchers to look into how the

community of inquiry and learning framework can best help students from the Philippines as well

as students from other developing and poor countries to achieve quality education through

technology-assisted interventions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has produced a new world full of challenges, dilemmas, as well

as opportunities. It is up to us to adapt and transform the challenges and dilemmas to

opportunities for growth and development for our nation and the global community.

6
THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

We as the researchers will determine the impact of COVID 19 among Grade 12 students

of Dumaguete City National High school (DCNHS).In this study, we aim to know on what are the

aspects that they are facing right now due to this pandemic, whether it is negative or positive if

it has no effect on their studies and performance as well. We are to identify first its positive

effect to know the advantages of COVID-19 towards education how it benefits the students to

the students. Second, are the negative effects of COVID-19 towards education which is very

crucial today to students because of this pandemic. And lastly, we will identify if there is any

changes of the students’ behavior due to this pandemic towards education.

Significance of the Study

The outcomes of this study are the insights of Grade 12 students of DCNHS on the impact

of Covid-19 in the academic aspect of their lives that can help in the student's self-awareness and

self-concept. In addition, parents can benefit to this study by creating new disciplinary procedures

to support and improve their children's academic performance. Lastly, curriculum developers,

teachers and other academic related organizations can creatively develop and improve

appropriate concept or approach in gaining effective learning system among students.

7
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Method

This study is entitled, “Covid-19's impact among grade 12 students of Dumaguete City

High School". This study uses the descriptive method of research. As widely accepted, the

descriptive method of research is a fact-finding study that involves interpretation of findings.

Descriptive research describes the characteristics of the population studied. This method is

appropriate to this study since it aims to determine the impacts of Covid-19 in students' academic

performance wether in a positive or negative manner. The survey is appropriate in this study

because it enables the researcher to gather data amidst the pandemic though online platforms

and communication through social media. The participants for the survey questionnaires were

given ample time to evaluate the impacts of Covid-19 in the academic aspects of their lives.

The purpose of using the descriptive method is to analyze and evaluate the impacts of

Covid-19 among the grade 12 students of Dumaguete City National High School in their academic

performance. The researchers used this kind of research considering the desire to acquire data

from the respondents to formulate conclusions and recommendations for the study. Since this

study is focused on the impacts of Covid-19 among students' academic performance, the

descriptive method is the most appropriate method to use. The surveying made up the

qualitative approach of the study as this focused on personal accounts, observations, description

and individual insights of the respondents.

City National High School. The participants will be the grade 12 students of Dumaguete City

National High School so that the data gathered will be more reliable. The study aims to determine

the impacts of COVID-19 in the academic performance of the students whether in a negative or

positive manner. Online surveys and virtual interviews will be conducted where the participants

are given an ample amount of time to answer the survey questionnaires.

Research Respondents

The researchers will seek voluntary sample of grade 12 students, who are officially

enrolled at Dumaguete City National High School. The targeted population of this research refers

to the grade 12 students of Dumaguete City National High School. There will be no survey

questions that are too difficult about the program that make the interviewee unwilling or

uncomfortable about participating in it. The researchers will seek to interview at most two

participants from different strands namely STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics), ABM (Accountancy and Business Management), GAS (General Academic Strand),

and HUMSS A and B (Humanities and Social Sciences). In total, the participants consist of 11 grade

12 students of Dumaguete City National High School.

14
Research Instrument

The instrument used for the research is a questionnaire made by the researchers in order

to gather the needed data. The questionnaire was based on the researcher’s readings and other

studies that are related to our study. In preparation, the methods of data collection are observed.

The questionnaire consists of close-ended questions to gather results within the researchers

expectations. The researchers provide questions for both positive and negative impacts about

the topic to prevent one-sided results. In this way, the researchers achieve balance, reliable, and

valid results. The survey will be held virtually within the participants’ comfort. In the end, it

encourages the participants to respond by selecting the situations that applies in their current

life. The questionnaire was checked and validated by an instructor before it was placed on the

study.

Data Gathering Procedure

Two types of data gathering were used: the primary and the secondary data. The primary

data were derived from the answers participants provide in the questionnaire prepared by the

researchers. In order to get the data needed we will interview grade 12 students from

Dumaguete City National High School. Every participant will be asked five close-ended questions

to be answered. Every question consist of choices that is expected answers of the participants.

These choices are carefully analyzed and interpreted by the researchers. Then secondary data on

the other hand, were derived from the findings stated in thesis books and literatures related to

the research problem. These were based from the recent literatures related to the topic.

15
Treatment of Data

This study was conducted to assess the impact of Covid-19 among grade 12 students of

Dumaguete City National High School in their academic performance. To be able to gather the

necessary data, the researcher used the descriptive method in data gathering. Herein, the chosen

respondents were conveniently selected from the grade 12 students of Dumaguete City National

High School. The students who have been chosen in this study accomplished survey

questionnaire to evaluate the impact of Covid-19. The results of the survey were then processed

and analyzed the interpretation of data. The researchers used a reverse way of thematic analysis

in data analysis. The expected answers from close-ended questions serve as the codes to be

analyzed. Codes were grouped under different themes. Then conclusions and recommendations

were formulated based on the results derived from the theme.

Discussions

Time Management

Time management is an important skill that a person must develop in order to increase

productivity. In this study, the researchers discovered that the students managed to enhanced

their time management skills. Such as accomplishing tasks like school works and household

chores. Thus, the researchers include time management as one of the positive impacts of COVID-

19 among students.

Perseverance

Patience is a virtue, same it goes for the perseverance. This virtue keeps a person on its

right path, a thing the researchers discovered from the participants. Students have a strong will

to finish their studies despite the challenges and the pandemic occuring around them. Even

though the new normal way of learning is difficult, it is an opportunity to learn. Thus,

perseverance is considered as one of the positive impacts of COVID-19 in this study.

Skills Enhancement

Every student have unique talents, abilities, and skills that were enhanced all throughout

their life. Two important life skills that can be applied during the pandemic are decision making

skills and independent learning skills. Deciding on what courses to take in college is crucial for

the participants. As well as learning independently due to the new normal way of learning. Time

to time, these set of skills were enhanced by the participants. Thus, the researchers concluded

that skills enhancement is one of the positive impacts of COVID-19 among students.

20
Self-factor Problems

The pandemic changed everything including the lifestyle of the students. This came with

new difficulties and challenges they face. It includes tardiness and difficulty in learning

independently. These problems can be only solve through the efforts of the students. The

researchers were aware of these problems as negative impacts of COVID-19 and recommend

students to practice time management and access the internet for more information about the

lessons.

School-factor Problems

In this new normal way of education, both parties (teachers and students) were

challenged in achieving quality learning. In this study, the researchers found out that students

were bombarded with school activities and lacks time answering the modules. The researchers

suggest that modules and activities can be easily accomplished specially this pandemic that

students have limited resources.

Technological Problems

The new normal way of learning brought new way of accessing information through

technological devices. The major problem that students encounter is having unstable internet

connection. While some of the students have no mobile phones or no internet access as well.

These problems were acknowledge by the researchers and suggest that government must also

help internet providers to speed up the internet connection.

21
DEFINITION OF TERMS

 COVID-19 - a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus. 'CO' stands for

corona, 'VI' for virus, and 'D' for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as

'2019 novel coronavirus' or '2019-nCoV.'

 E - Learning - is the delivery of learning and training through digital resources. Although

eLearning is based on formalized learning, it is provided through electronic devices such

as computers, tablets and even cellular phones that are connected to the internet.

 Modality - a way or mode in which something exists or is done. Modality shares its root

with the word mode, meaning "the way in which something happens or is experienced.

 Distance learning - also called distance education, e-learning, and online learning, form of

education in which the main elements include physical separation of teachers and

students during instruction and the use of various technologies to facilitate student-

teacher and student-student communication.

22
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-depth

search done by the researchers. This will also present on how the students are affected upon facing

the academic difficulties due to the COVID 19 Pandemic. Some of the difficulties of the students

are lack of technologies , on how they can access internet , and the pros and cons during this span

on time.

1. DepEd Learning Delivery Modalities for School Year 2020-2021

The learning delivery methods that the schools may adopt may be one or a combination of

the following, depending on the limitations of COVID-19 and the specific context of the learners

in the school or locality. Traditional Face to Face learning where students and teacher will interact

physically. Because of this pandemic Distance Learning was being implemented all throughout

the country. To continue the learning of the students through modalities which includes Modular

distance learning , Online distance learning , Blended Learning and Home Schooling.

2. Schools, skills, and learning: The impact of COVID-19 on education

The COVID-19 pandemic is primarily a health crisis. Many countries (rightly) have

decided to close down schools, colleges and universities. The crisis criss-crosses the dilemma that

policymakers face between closing schools (reducing contact and saving lives) and keeping them

open (allowing workers to work and maintaining the economy). Many families around the world

are experiencing serious short-term disruptions: home schooling is not only a massive shock to

parents' productivity, but also to children's social life and learning. Teaching is moving online, on

an unprecedented and untested scale. Student assessments also move online, with a process of trial

and error and uncertainty for everyone. Many of the analyses have simply been cancelled.

Importantly, these distractions will not only be a short-term issue, but may also have long-term

repercussions for the affected cohorts and are likely to increase inequalities.

Use of E-learning and its Effect on students, a research paper published as a pdf file online

made by Saleem, M. A. and Rasheed, I. In this research paper, it talks about the effects of e-

learning to the student, based on the three variables: time, workload and technology. It also tells

the practically of using e-learning as it is time saving, decrease workload and technology. This is

however relevant to our topic as it states the advantages of e-learning on students and thus giving

us a foresight on what would be the outcome of our research.

2. The role of E-Learning, the advantages and disadvantages of its adoption in Higher

Education.

The role of e-learning, the advantages and disadvantages of its adoption in Higher

Education an online book written by Arkorful, V. and Abaidoo, N. As it stated in the abstract of

the book, this study investigates the effectiveness of using e-learning in teaching in secondary

institutions. In institutions of higher education, the issue of utilizing modern information and

communication technologies for teaching and learning is very important. This study reviews

literature and gives a scholarly background to the study by reviewing some contributions made by

various researchers and institutions on the concept of e-learning, particularly its usage in teaching

and learning in higher educational institutions. It unveils some views that people and institutions

have shared globally on the adoption and integration of e-learning technologies in education

through surveys and other observations. It looks at the meaning or definitions of e-learning as

given by different researchers and the role that e-learning plays in higher educational institutions

25
in relation to teaching and learning processes, and the advantages and disadvantages of its adoption

and implementation. Thus, it could be relevant of use for our topic mainly focuses on the advantage

and disadvantages of e-learning.

3. The Impact of Lockdown on Higher Education

According to Simbulan (2020), higher education institutions (HEIs), both public and

private, have also had to adjust to the new situation where face-to-face interaction and mass

gatherings are prohibited. Committed to their mandate, the leading universities and colleges in

the Philippines, particularly those affiliated with the ASEAN University Network – such as the

University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University and De la Salle University, found

innovative ways to fulfil their three-pronged tasks of education, research and service. Everyone,

from the operations and support service units, to administrators and teachers, adjusted to work-

from-home arrangements.
