Summary
Literature is an inescapable part in the development of a mentally and emotionally balanced
personality. It enables us to explore the world around us, gives a better understanding of society,
culture, heritage, history, life and issues related to it. By studying literature we can learn and able
to see new things, facts, reality or truths, ideas, human condition or behavior and good or bad in
our society through fictionalised accounts of the experience. Which then also make us able to
speak or criticise against social ills by giving us the ability to think critically and analytically.

Consequently, if one study literature from school life, he will must be prepared enough to learn
new ideas and elements with their meaningful understanding in accordance to ELT classrooms
which function is to promote the natural and objective usage of language.

Unfortunately, our society and education system oversight the value and importance of literature
and have failed to introduce it as a discipline to our children. There are some reasons behind it;
such as, most literate people do not spend their time on reading extensively, also in job sector
literature has limited scope so they are more directed towards scientific disciplines without
knowing that the meaning of life can only be get through expressive words but not through
scientific units. Another reason is the unavailability of any written literature for the common man
which matches their local or social needs. Most of the writers in Pakistan writes about foreign
society rather than their own society which make reader incapable to understand actual fact and
figures. Whereas, the books available are more costly and expensive which middle class cannot
afford, there are also not much trend of local libraries in Pakistan so people do not practice
reading so far.

Similarly, some private schools are only teaching Classic English literature, as a result children
are unable to relate it with their present social conditions. Some of their novels are full of sorrow
which make children depressive because teachers available are not able to handle that kind of
literature. As the primary focus of the teaching literature is to develop morally and emotionally
stable personality of the children from the age of 9 to 10, with keeping them safe from
bombarding media and harsh realities of life.

However, educational institute especially O-levels are not providing Eastern classical or Urdu
literature such as; Arabian Nights, stories from Sheikh Saadi, Rumi and Bhittai, neither at
primary levels nor in form of English translation while it’s being not much hard.

Altogether, if we neglect or subtract the role of literature from education, it will must result in
ignorance and frustration in our society. Literature plays stimulus part in one's creative thinking
and development so it must should be practice from primary levels in schools, because according
to C.S Lewis literature just adds to reality, it does not simply describe it.
