In this Self Learning Module, the different jewelries will be discussed.

EARRINGS An earring is a piece of jewelry attached to the ear via a piercing in the earlobe or another
external part of the ear. Both sexes can wear earrings and used by different civilizations in different times. .

Earring Fashion for Women and Men


Men and women wear earrings in many countries, but it is considered effeminate when men wear it. During
the Middle Ages in Europe large hats, tall wigs and high collars overshadowed earrings. But in the 16 th and
17th centuries, lower necklines and more simple hairstyles made earrings comeback in fashion. Jewelers
and craftsmen sell gold earrings to upper classes, and display their wealth in the fine jewelry they wore.

Earrings Today

More than one set of earrings were worn during the 1970’s with multiple piercings, in all areas of the outer
ear, not just the lobes. Many changes in styles and materials were introduced in the latter years of the 20 th
century.

The versatility of gold earrings remained in style. It can be worn with almost any color or clothing style, from
casual to formal. It is considered a classic and important in a woman’s wardrobe.

Since ancient times, gold jewelry has been considered classic and essential to the wardrobe. Jewelers
continue to sell gold earrings as gifts, basic and special pieces

TYPES OF EARRINGS

1, Stud Earrings It can be made our of diamonds, pearls, gemstones, gold or silver
set on a metal rod that stick through the ear lobe with an equal
backing to secure them. They never go out of style because of it
is simple and classic.
2. Hoop Earrings is a circular band of metal or other materials and hooks at the back.
It never goes out of fashion.

3.Drop Earrings dangles off the ears usually set on a fish hook, or from a lever back
It includes chandelier type earrings which have different lengths
dangling down from the ears.

Earring Backs – help secure the earrings on your ears. Some are stronger than others, and some have
screw on backs to prevent loss.

Type of Earring Backs

1.Fish Hook It is curved like a hook that passes through the ear pieced. It
is long enough that it doesn’t have a backing

2. Screw Back The earring is more secure in this type of backing. The
backing screws on the post, usually takes a little longer to put
on the ears
3.Lever back It is a fish hook with an enclosure that latches behind the ears.

4.French Back It is also called as the Omega Backing which has a post that

5.Latch Back is a hinged backing on hoops that the post goes through.

BRACELET

The word bracelet came from the Latin word “brachium” which simply means”arm”. As far as 7,000
years ago archeologists have found evidences that people wore bracelets in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia
and China.

TYPES OF BRACELET

1. Chain there are many different types of chains, some have large
links, others are flat, and others have no openings. It can be made out
of yellow, or white gold, platinum or sterling silver.

decorations on it.
3.Pearl – Natural pearls are expensive and not easily affordable by
common people. That’s why most of the pearl accessories sold are
made from cultured pearls, and it is hard to tell the difference between
a good quality cultured pearl and a natural pearl.

4.Cultured pearls are grown in saltwater and freshwater. Saltwater


cultured pearls are much higher in quality as compared to freshwater
cultured pearls. Saltwater cultured pearl jewelry is much more
expensive

5. Bangle - The word from the Hindi word bungri (glass) which are
circular in shape and are not flexible. They are made of numerous
precious or semi-precious materials, such as gold, silver, platinum,
glass, wood, ferrous metals, and plastic.

6. Charm – a simple chain bracelet which carries personal


jewelled ornaments or charms, like decorative pendants, trinkets
that carry personal or sentimental attachment by the owner.
