In Search of a Friend

I am Sally. I am ten years old and very lonely. I don’t have any friends. Last day, a new kid

joined our class. Her name was Gem. At first, she was very quiet and scared. Two kids were
already starting to bully her, for her height. I’ll admit, she was the shortest girl in the class but bulling a
new kid has gotten too far. I walked up to them and said:

“Go! Now!”

“What’s wrong pussycat?” One of them said.

“Go! Stop teasing her!” I cried

“What’re you going to -?” The second kid asked

“Now!” I stopped them and cried

“Fine! Pussycat.” One of them said

Then they walked past me and I patted Gem on the shoulder and helped her get up from the floor.

“Don’t worry. They are like that.” I told Gem

“Thanks. I like your cat hair band. It’s like mine.” Gem told me

“Welcome. I like yours too.” I said and sat down beside her in my sit when Miss Baton came and made
an announcement.

“Good afternoon children. I have an announcement. Tomorrow we are going on a field trip! We are
going camping in the woods! One tent equals to two people. Please come with all the necessities
needed. No devices allowed. The school bus will pick you up in the morning.”

Some of the kids including me said, “Yay! Wow! It is going to be so much fun!”

The next day, I noticed something while I was going inside the bus. Gem was sitting alone and was a bit
sad. I got inside the bus and sat beside her.

“Are you okay?” I asked Gem

“Yeah. It’s just that this is my first field trip. In my other field trips in my early school, I didn’t go. But this
time my mom told me to go because I don’t go out much and that I need to start to start to socialize.”
Gem told me

“Oh. Don’t worry. You can stay in my tent. We can eat marshmallows, play games with each other. It will
be fun.” I said to cheer her up.
“Okay.” Gem said starting to get a bit happy.

When our whole class reached the woods, we started to make our tents. Gem’s and mine were this one:

It was big enough to fit us both. Then Gem got hungry but wasn’t telling me. I knew it
because she was putting her hand on her stomach and I heard her stomach grumbling. I took out a box
from my backpack with four hotdogs in it.

“My mom made these for us. Want one?” I asked Gem handing her a hot dog

“Thanks.” She said taking it from my hand

Then I took out two bottles of water and put in front of Gem.

“Thank you. You have been very kind to me. It has been the first time anyone has treated me this way in
any school.” Gem told me

“No worries. I know what it is like being new. You got to stand up for yourself.” I told her while eating a
hot dog.

“Uh-huh.” Gem told me.

It was starting to get dark. The stars were twinkling in the deep blue sky. Gem and I were staring at
them. Then I saw a shooting star.

“Quick! Make a wish!” I told Gem

“Um, ok! I wish my friend Sally always treats me well like she does to me now.” Gem said.

“Don’t worry! I will always treat you well. For as long as I have to.” I said and went inside the tent to go
to sleep.

I think that was the first time ever that I got a friend. It felt like my heart was filled with happiness then. I
will always remember Gem. She followed me inside and then we played my favorite game, Memory
Game. It’s really fun. Then we fell asleep as it was getting late.

The next morning the bus took us both homes.

“Goodbye, Gem. I’ll see you on Monday! Stay safe!” I cried and told Gem from outside the bus

“Goodbye Sally! You too!” Gem replied happily

I got inside my house and told my mom and dad about our trip. They loved to hear all about it. I hope
Gem stays my friend forever.
