ACTIVITY 6

Discuss and solve the following problems with your group and submit your handwritten work in PDF. If
possible, draw a diagram to illustrate and solve the problem. Show your complete solutions.

1. A seller sells a washing machine at a cost price of Php15, 000 with a profit of 20%. Calculate the price
at which the customer will purchase it. And also, find profit earned by the shopkeeper.

2. A Php3000 mountain bike is discounted by 30% and then discounted an additional 10% for
shoppers who arrive before 9:00 a.m.

a. Find the sales price of the bicycle.

b. In all, by how much has the bicycle been discounted? Explain.

c. After both discounts were taken, what was the total percent discount?

3. A rectangular garden has length 3cm more than its width. If the area of the garden is 70 cm2,
find its dimensions. If the gardener wants to enclose the garden with a wire fence that cost Php55
per meter, how much will it cost him?

4. Three missionaries and three cannibals must cross a river using a boat which can carry at most
two people, under the constraint that, for both banks and the boat, if there are missionaries
present on the bank (or the boat), they cannot be outnumbered by cannibals (if they were, the
cannibals would eat the missionaries). The boat cannot cross the river by itself without any
people on board.

a. How are they going to cross the river in such a way that in neither bank, the cannibals should
not outnumber the missionaries? Show your complete solutions and in any case, draw the
possible crossings.

b. Is it possible for four cannibals and four missionaries to cross the river under the same
conditions? Explain your answer.
