Justice of Timis proved yesterday, once again, the fact that the law represents nothing but an
object from which an abstraction can be made when interests demand it. The Timiș Tribunal has
passed sentence in the case known as „Chessboard”. We remind you that on June 6 this year, a
major operation of the officers of the Regional Center for Combating Organized Crime and
Antidrug Timișoara resulted in the highest cocaine capture in Romania recorded this year – 2,03
kg, equivalent to approximately 20,000 doses, whose market value is 6 billion lei. Four
traffickers were arrested and the fifth was pursued international ”wanted” list, dissapearing
without a trace. The case arrived at the Timis Court, with the case being adjudicated by its vice-
president, Ioan Jivan. At the final hearing, the judge postponed pronouncing the sentence several
times. Yesterday, it was made public. Gage Olimpiu, Bot Walter, Mladenovici Dumitru şi
Bachici Miodrag were sentenced to 14 years in prison for drug trafficking at high risk. However,
suspiciously, the judge acquitted the man who proved to be the head of the network, Alexa
Claudiu, who is 24 years old, romanian citizen residing in Canada. During the investigation, one
of those arrested, Bot, admitted, even before court, that the drugs he had to sell had been
received from Alexa. Moreover, the phone listings also proved that, before the time of the
transaction of the two kilograms of cocaine, Alexa has kept in touch permanently with Gage on
his mobile phone. Alexa was detained by the police anti-drug unit in Giroc village where the
transaction was carried out. Immediately after detention. To Alexa, his reliable men offered no
less than $100.000 to make the man be removed from file. By yesterday's sentence, Alexa was
released, having the opportunity of making himself scarce. Drug affairs in the Alexa family are
not new, his brother was convicted in the '80 in Germany for white heroin trafficking. Judge
Jivan's sentence from yesterday undermining the work done by prosecutors and police for several
months. The Vice-President of the Timis Court is not at his first questionable sentence. A few
months ago, the daily newspaper „Adevarul” revealed that judge Ioan Jivan ordered the release
of Cornel Urcan, former manager of Continental Hotel in Timisoara city, who was arrested in a
case of billions of lei damages. After release, Urcan was re-incarcerated as a result of the
decision by the Timișoara Court of Appeal. The Timis court ruling yesterday continues the series
of dubious acquitars in the case of drug traffickers. Several years ago, Albu Elena, the
coordinator of an international heroin network, was released, disappearing without trace. When
she was sentenced to heavy years in prison, she was far away. Sources inside the underworld said
that drug traffickers would win another victory against those who are trying to stop the scourge
of white death to Sibiu. There it is preparing he payment of the members of another cocaine
dealer ring headed by Dan Emil

Translate into Romanian:
"Organized transnational crime has become one of the most important issues of nationai security
agencies. Drug trafficking continues to generate huge revenues for the members of criminal
groups. With the help of new technology such as computerisation electronic crime prevails,
alongside with the traditional economic one. Are govemments' efforts powerful enough in their
figlrt against organized crime gangs? Are tougher laws enough to stop them? We do not know
that. What we do know for sure is that organized crime is a serious threal to democracy!"
