We are now coming up to Canon Fort, another name of High Point 177, is the
most famous historic relic of Cat Ba Island. Perched atop a hill, 177 meters high
above the sea, Canon Fort is the best spot to admire sweeping views of Cat Ba
Island, Lan Ha Bay, and especially the sunset. This historical area includes the
battlefield of large artillery guns and the system of military tunnels and ditches
built in the 40s of 20th century.
The Japanese invaded Cat Ba first during WWII in order to use it as a military
outpost. They built the tunnels and trenches. It was then used by the Vietnamese
during the French and American Wars as a defense post (1945 – 1975)

Here, you can see two Cannons that are displayed prominently. Because they were
made a long time ago, now they look old and rusted .The cannons were made by
the French in 1910, used electricity and had a range of 40km. They were placed
there when the French overtook Cat Ba during the French War. It was soon
reclaimed and the Vietnamese kept using the cannons then, against them..

Following the wall, you will see the cannon number 1 and 2.

On front of you is No.1 Cannon. It’s had control over the port of Hai Phong. When
the war escalated between the USA and Northern Vietnam, locals used rifles and
12.7mm cannons against American Aircrafts, shooting 6 of them in total from this
particular point.

As we turn the corner here, you will see No.2 Cannon.

No.2 Cannon had actually three different ones pointing in different directions (two
of them have been destroyed since). The cannon fort has become a historical
witness contributing to the establishment of the glorious success.

In Cannon fort, you will have a chance to explore the museum, a small building
that contains a large collection of relics of war.

Tourist: How do we get there?

Guide: I’ll point it out when we pass it. It’s going to come up on your right in a
few minutes.

Tourist: Look at this. Is that the museum you were talking about?

Guide: Sure, It is Memorial Room, also called Love Room.

You can see helmets, bullet casings, clothing, and some photographs.

There are many things left behind by soldiers, such as weapons and devices used.
This place was originally where soldiers were meeting with their relatives during
visits. It was a great moment for soldiers.

Tourist: I have a question actually

Guide: Is there something I can help you with?

Tourist: Are we allowed to take picture’s one we get inside?

Guide: Of course. I will take pictures for you.

……

Visiting Cannon fort, we should not to miss ‘U tunnel’ that is one part of the fort .
In the past, this tunnel was used as an important armory with some forms of
storage rooms.

Woman: Is it on the right or the left?

Guide: Now, if you look uo straight ahead, you should be able to see a “U tunnel”.
Let’s go.

( 3 minute…)

Guide: Does everyone see it there?

Tourist: This tunnel’s shape is like a U.

Guide: That right, as its name suggests. It was used as a shelter, but was also
hosting daily activities with a kitchen, meeting and dining rooms, medical rooms…
in total, it could host up to 500 people at once. It was designed to exit to the airport
area.

In a few minute we will be passing observatory systems. From the observation

deck of the Cannon fort, we can zoom in to the vast space with space and scenery.

Tourist: Oh sounds really great, I want to go there.

Guide: I sure you with like there.

Keep your eyes open for, located at the foot of the mountain are two most beautiful
beaches in Cat Ba – Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2.

Guide: Beautiful! The scenery is splendid.

Guide: Looking to the other side is Cat Ba Bay, with hundreds of fishing boats
anchored with floating houses.

Tourist: We are enjoyed it very much.

BÁNH ĐA CUA
Trang: Hey, I’m so hungry. Now it is 10:30 a.m, I wonder if there is any place
to eat around here?
Hà A: Oh, I know a very famous dish here. Just mentioning Cát Bà Hải Phòng,
people will immediately think of this dish. Come on, I will lead everyone there!

………………………………

Hà A: Now, we are at Bánh đa cua – 123 Lạc Long Quân street.

Hà B: Aaaa, I’ve also heard about Bánh đa cua in Haiphong.

Trang: Yepp, me too. I want to try the local food here to see how different from
the places I usually eat.

Hà A:Okayyy, let’s eat!

………………………………

Hà A:Bánh đa cua (crab noodle soup) is a well-known specialty of the northern

port city of Haiphong. A bowl of crab noodle soup with its intriguing flavor
including salty, sweet, sour, spicy, and fat flavors will win the heart of food lovers.

The signature ingredient of the dish is the reddish-brown noodles or bánh

đa in Vietnamese. A bowl of traditional Haiphong crab noodles must be served
with beef wrapped in piper lolot leaves and some other herbs.

To make the reddish-brown noodles of the dish, rice has to be dried under
the sun before being ground into flour. The rice flour will then be mixed with
water to have a chewy mixture. Next, the cook will use some gấc powder and
sugar or a special liquid to add a nice dark brown color to the noodles. Then, the
rice flour will be steamed and dried on bamboo mats.

Crabs must be fresh to have a tasty broth. A bowl of attractive Haiphong

crab noodle usually includes crabmeat, bánh đa, beef wrapped in piper lolot leaves,
and some minced green onions, chilies, drops of lemon, and fried pork cracklings.
The dish is also served with some fried hollow Chinese breadsticks.

It is this eye-catching color combined with the delicious and greasy flavor that
captures diners even once to enjoy it.

Follow me to discover Kim Giao forest……

TG: You know. According to ancient legends, there was a couple in love, a boy
named Kim, a girl named Giao. Both are children of poor families and the two
have vowed together to be friends for a hundred years. But due to the enemy in the
North to invade their homeland, the officials were cowardly to fight back, raise
their hands to surrender and collude with them, exploiting and helpless the
villagers. Kim followed a man in the village against the invaders, but
unfortunately, he was captured and tortured by the enemy. Because he missed Giao
so much, he fell ill and died. The inmates and local people loved him, so they were
buried in the middle of the forest. On the other hand, the girl named Giao also
loved and decided to find Kim, but when she arrived, the local people say that Kim
died. According to the instructions, she went to his grave, because it was so
heartbreaking, she struggled to cry and then died out exhausted. Touched by the
situation of the two people, the villagers decided to bury Kim's dead girl.
Sometime later, in the middle of the two graves sprouted a tree that was called Kim
Giao tree.

Tourist: What’s the meanings of “Cay Kim Giao” ?

TG: A special type of tree called “Cay Kim Giao” is unique to Cat Ba. In ancient
times, kings and nobles would eat only with chopsticks made from this timber, as
the light colored wood was reputed to turn to black when it touched anything
poisonous.

Tourist: That’s sound amazing!

Tourist: *see Kim Giao tree and say* Is that the “Kim Giao tree” you were talking
about?

TG: That’s right!

TG: If you are healthy enough, you can continue climbing the trail more than 500
meters to reach the top of Ngu Lam. At an altitude of 200m above sea level,
visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the central area of Cat Ba stretching along
the Trung Trang valley.

TG: Here, you can visit and admire the landscape as well as explore its features. I
hope that you will have a perfect time, relax and enjoy your trip.
