Organ: - Colon

Lesion: - Chronic colonic ischemia with atrophic


surface epithelium and fibrotic lamina propria.

Diagnosis: - Ischemia

Organ: - Colon

Lesion: - Acute, self-limited colitis. Neutrophils can


be seen within surface and crypt epithelium and a
crypt abscess is present at the lower right.

Diagnosis: - Bacterial enterocolitis (Campylobacter


jejuni)

Organ: - Colon

Lesion: - Typical pattern of neutrophils emanating


from a crypt is reminiscent of a volcanic eruption.

Diagnosis: - Clostridium difficile colitis

Organ: - Second portion of the duodenum or proximal


jejunum

Lesion: - Infiltration of the surface epithelium by T


lymphocytes, which can be recognized by their
densely stained nuclei (labeled T). Compare with
elongated, pale-staining epithelial nuclei (labeled E).

Diagnosis: - Celiac disease.

Organ: - Ileum

Lesion: - The middle portion has a thickened wall and the mucosa has lost the
regular folds.

Diagnosis: - Crohn's disease.

Organ: - Ileum

Lesion: - The granulomatous nature of the


inflammation of Crohn disease is
demonstrated here with epithelioid cells,
giant cells, and many lymphocytes.

Diagnosis: - Crohn's disease.
