OVERVIEW: One of the country’s major ports, handling most cargoes, in
addition to being a major container port for Germany’s industrial heartland.
LOCATION: On the Elbe River above Brunsbuttel.

RESTRICTIONS: Inbound:
1. Entry permitted throughout 24 hours, subject to weather and tidal
conditions. Under normal weather and tidal conditions, vessels with a draft up to
12.5 m. in salt water (12.8 m. (FW)) on arrival Elbe Lightbuoy may enter at any
time. Container vessels with beam exceeding 32.3 m., draft is reduced to 12.4 m.
(SW), (12.7 m. (FW)) at any time.
2. Vessels greater than draft 12.5 m. up to allowed max. draft of 14.8 m.
(SW) on arrival Elbe Lightbuoy may enter only with rising tide. Other restrictions
as follows:
a) vessels of LOA 330 – 340 m. or beam 45.0 – 50.0 m.; permitted max.
draft of 14.6 m. (SW)
b) vessels of LOA 340 – 350 m. or beam 50.0 – 55.0 m.; permitted max.
draft 14.4 m. (SW)

3. Vessels requiring HW entry should proceed in order to reach Port Pilot
Station 1 – 1.5 hours before HW.
Outbound:
1. Vessels may depart Hamburg under normal weather and tidal conditions
at any time with draft up to 12.8 m. (FW). Container vessels with beam exceeding
32.3 m., draft is reduced to 12.7 m. at any time.
2. Container ships may leave from Port Pilot Station as follows:

PILOTAGE: Harbour Pilotage: Compulsory for vessels with dangerous
cargo and vessels over LOA 90 m. or beam 13.0 m. Pilotage is not compulsory for
vessels up to LOA 120 m. and/or beam up to 18.0 m., if:
a) the Master has called at the Port of Hamburg with ship 6 times within the
last 12 months
b) the Master speaks German fluently. The Master is required to apply for
PEC at Harbour Master’s office Vessels exceeding above mentioned dimensions
may apply for PEC if:
a) the Master has called with the ship during the last 12 months
b) the Master speaks German fluently
c) the Master has undertaken an examination set by the Harbour Master’s
office Harbour Pilots board vessel close to the Seemannshoft Station. Inbound
vessels requiring a Pilot should contact the Hamburg Harbour Pilot Duty Officer
by telephone or through VTS Centre Hamburg Port Traffic, on passing
Brunsbuttel. Outbound vessels should contact Pilots either by VHF or telephone, 2
hours prior to leaving the berth. Harbour Pilots work on VHF Channel 9, call
‘‘Hamburg Pilot’’.
River Elbe Pilotage: Provided by Elbe Pilots between the Elbe Lightbuoy
and the port of Hamburg (including all ports and berths on the River Elbe).
Inbound vessels to advise Elblotse Brunsbuettel of ETA 12 and 1 hour prior to
arrival at the Pilot station. Outbound vessels are required to advise Elblotse
Hamburg 4 hours prior to departure Hamburg.

ANCHORAGES: Available at several places between Elbe Lightbuoy and
Hamburg.
PRATIQUE: Master required to complete Maritime Declaration of Health
when Pilot boards. Only vessels with infectious diseases are subject to detention.
PRE-ARRIVAL INFORMATION: In order to avoid delay and extra
charges, Master should advise ETA at least 12 hours prior to arrival at Elbe Pilot
Station to ‘‘Elblotse Brunsbuettel’’, stating the following details:
a) name of vessel
b) call sign
c) IMO number
d) destination (Hamburg, Kiel Canal, Cuxhaven, Brunsbuttel, Stade)
e) ETA Elbe Pilot station
f) extra orders
g) max. river speed.
VHF: Hamburg Port Traffic works Channel 14.
1 hour before arrival at Elbe Lightbuoy, Masters are advised to contact the
pilot cutter on Channel 13 or 16.
VTS/RADAR: River radar service from Elbe 1 to Hamburg. Hamburg
Radar Service ‘‘Hamburg Radar Radio’’, VHF Channels 03 and 19 at the lower
end of Seemannshoeft, VHF Channels 80 and 07 at the western and southern part
of harbour, VHF Channels 63 and 05 at upper part east of Koehlbrand.

TUGS: Normally join inbound vessels at Harbour Pilot Station at
Finkenwerder. Tug’s lines used at no extra charge.

Facilities: Discharge rate heavy grain 1,650 tonnes/hr. Two pneumatic and
one mechanical unloader, conveyor rated at 1,000 tonnes/hr., silo storage totalling
180,000 tonnes and tanks handling vegetable oil totaling 25,000 tonnes. Cargoes
handled are grain and vegetable oil.
Vessel: Discharge: Max. LOA 280 m., draft 13.7 m. handling up to 90,000
tonnes throughout 24 hours.
Loading: Max. LOA 200 m., draft 11.0 m., handling up to 25,000 tonnes at
600 tonnes/hr. throughout 24 hours. Panamax ships discharging 50,000 – 60,000
tonnes take approximately 2.5 days. Simultaneous discharging/loading, with or
without intermediate storage in the silo. At the inland harbour, up to 3,000 tonnes
can be loaded/unloaded to coasters.

STEVEDORES: Ordered by Agents, no additional ETAs required.
Working Hours:
Monday to Friday: Three shifts 0650 – 1500, 1500 – 2310 and 2310 – 0650
Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: Four shifts 0700 – 1300, 1300 – 1900, 1900 –
0100 and 0100 – 0700.
Work performed after 1500 hrs. Monday to Friday, on Saturdays after 1300
hrs., on Sundays and holidays is at overtime rates.
Opening/Closing Hatches: Normally by crew with the assistance of
stevedores; otherwise, according to charter party.
WASTE DISPOSAL: Service is available from various local suppliers
using garbage launches, only during normal working hours. Contact Agent.
FRESH WATER: Available from shore at most berths. Also supplied by
barge.
FUEL: All grades available from oil berths, or supplied by barge.
STORING: See ‘‘Storing’’ on page xiv.
